My only issue with Calypsonians like Chalkdust and Cro Cro was they did not have the versatility in their music like Sparrow, Kitchener, David Rudder. Their music was mostly political commentary. You could not get a vibes song like Jean and Dinah or Bahia Girl from a Chalkdust or Cro Cro. To be great you need to be versatile

You have to be kidding,
the List
Sparrow
Kitchener
Shadow
Arrow
Lord Short Shirt

Ras Shorty had numerous hits. In his time got a lot of radio air play. At some point chose a bohemian lifestyle with his family, no modern day trappings or possessions. Did not produce any music in that period.

There are hits and there are HITS.
and in the context of this conversation I am talking about HITS

Ok dude my point flew over your head. I can also name numerous hits from Lord Nelson, Sugar Aloes, Crazy, Maestro, Merchant and more. Point is they will all not make most people list.
In reply to problemjay
You made no point. You have an opinion. I disagree that it. Hits from the masters you mentioned above are framed continuously in time.
Ras Shorty is well known as the father of the music and the man who lead in started it all. But he not timeless classics in the Calypso Soca circles like a Kitchener- Sugar Bum Bum or a Shadow-Dingolay. And that is why I will not put hm up there with the greats.
when I leave Trini and go to a soca fete in New York I still here Stalin-Black Man feeling to party, among the younger crowd and that means something. You do not get that with Ras Shorty music
In reply to TriniStar
These old men in here like Overthrow will not understand what you mean. That is why I said in my first comment this topic is not for old men. Shorty songs do not travel and resonate everywhere.
Still ah have to respect the man for being d man who started Sokah that later was called Soca
In reply to TriniStar
Some excellent points. With respect to hearing a Black Stalin song compared with a Ras Shorty song there are other reasons.
The age group at the fetes
Ras Shorty music about 25 years prior (and the others about 40 years ago)
The beats per minutes in the newest songs more party conducive.
In reply to Overthrow
Its simply that song is way above par than all songs Shorty released hence why it still resonate with any generation. Twenty years from now ah bet you will still be hearing Black man feeling to party in fetes
In reply to TriniStar
Frankly I hope we will hear Black Man in twenty years at parties. The difference in taste due to generational change may just be unstoppable.
In reply to Overthrow
Some classics are forever man. You must hear Dingolay in fete as well and that was released since the 1980's. And there are recent songs like Savannah Grass released 2018 that I can already tell will live on for a long time as well. When you know you know

"Watch out my children"

In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
You sent me to You Tube to find this song. Must admit the first time I heard it. Lost touch with a lot more good music which did not get air play.
A very good song with strong lyrics. His ability to traverse different styles of calypso/soca reflects how gifted a talent he is. More of a jazz/soul type composition.
In reply to Overthrow
You never heard watch out my children before? Its among the greatest songs Not just soca/calypso
In reply to Jabari18
Unfortunately life took quite a drastic turn in 1980. Missed out on a lot unless the music was party related or got air play. Started rebuilding a pieces in 1990s.
