CaribbeanCricket.com 2021-06-08 16:32:42

GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named the West Indies Men’s 13-member squad for the first Betway Test Match against South Africa. The Test squad includes one newcomer in Jayden Seales, the exciting 19-year-old fast bowler from Trinidad & Tobago and former member of West Indies Under-19 World Cup squad in 2020, who has been very impressive since he emerged on the scene.

The panel also recalled Shai Hope, the top-order batsman, and Kieran Powell, the experienced left-handed opener. Hope last played Test cricket in England in July last year, while Powell’s last Test appearance was in Bangladesh in December, 2018.

Speaking on the squad selection, Roger Harper, the Lead Selector said: “Jayden Seales is young, very enthusiastic and has a big heart. In the ‘Best v Best’ matches he bowled with pace, got movement and has displayed the ability to take wickets. We think he is capable of adding potency to the bowling attack.

This series will be the real Test on the quality of Bonner, Mayers, Blackwood, Hope, and Powell.

So it is not a real test for the others?

plug 2021-06-09 01:01:48

It is a two test series, I'll drop any batsman who doesn't make atleast 60 in an innings, I'll drop Da silva if he doesn't make an impressive 50, don't need no dead rubber fifty either and Drop Alzarri who's suppose to be the lead bowler if he doesn't improve from his last match against Sri Lanka

Brerzerk 2021-06-09 01:55:04

In reply to azadtnt

please explain why Bonnner is dropped

Brerzerk 2021-06-09 02:01:38

How many times will we pick an exciting 19yr. old pacer who breaks down within 2yrs? When Josephs was picked I said we would see a vast difference between he and Rabada if CWI did not seek out and adopt Cricket South Africa's strength training program for fast bowlers and so said so done. Taylor was taken straight out of High School with little club or FC cricket to his name and rushed into hectic int'l cricket without the attendant fitness program for a 19yr. old developing body bowling pace.

It is a Test for the others also , but we know who the others are, however will the players who have been better than expected continue to do well or come down to what the others are.

My possible X1:

2. Powell
3. Hope
4. Myers
5. Chase
6 Bonner
7. Blackwood
8 Holder
9. Joshua
10. Roach
11. Seales

Both Joseph and Cornwall should be rested because they have not been getting wickets at home. In fact Alzari has not been getting crickets anywhere not even for his county team! Myers would be my forth seamer and Chase would be my spin bowler

Who is sign SEALED and delivered?..Dats an old Stevie Wonder song.
big grin

Sylobaby 2021-06-09 15:15:45

In reply to Rascalp

No one is signed, sealed and delivered but in recent times we had test hundreds from Kraig, Myers and Bonner and good innings from Blackwood and Joshua. Similarly we had both Roach and Holder take at list 4 wickets in an inning and same can be said of Chase in practice match. When last Alzari took 4 wickets in an inning for us? Nothing against Cornwall but he has not been taking test wickets in the Caribbean

Rascalp 2021-06-09 16:02:58

What good innings from Blackwood....lately all he do is mek 20 or 30 and then throw his wicket away.

That line of thinking, I like it. That is what the selectors should adhere to, not so-called "talent" and
'experience". Don't tweet me, show me.
These guys must be given a chance to see how far they can go. Will guys like Mayers and Bonner eventually hit a road block? I am sure of that since that is part of the game, but for now I like their approach to batting. Da Silva has also impressed me a lot.

JamMack 2021-06-09 19:41:57

For the 1st Test

1. Brathwaite
2. Hope
3. Bonner
4. Mayers
5. Blackwood
6. Holder
7. de Silva (wk)
8. Cornwall
9. Joseph
10. Roach
11. Seales

brians_da_best 2021-06-09 19:47:22

My eleven

Brathwaite
Powell
Bonner
Hope (Wk)
Mayers
Blackwood
Chase
Holder
Cornwall
Joseph
Roach

But I believe they'll get Da Silva to keep, and hope / Powell might sit

TanteMerle 2021-06-09 19:52:09

In reply to Sylobaby

Good 11.
1. Braffit (Obvious)
2. Powell (Should be given a chance)
3. Hope (Obvious, best batter by far in Wondies)
4. Myers (Obvious and fourth seamer)
5. Chase (Better bowler and batsman than Cornwall)
6. Bonner (Obvbious)
7. Blackwood (Can't bat, but obvious choice)
8. Holder (Nuff said)
9. Joshua (Nuff said)
10. Roach (Nuff said)
11. Seales (Fast to replace injured Angel)

Joseph don't take wickets.
Cornwall don't take wickets at home.
Chase is better bowler and batsman the Cornwall.

Lot's of players on probation this home series.
Bonner, although he is doing well thus far.
Mayers, although he is doing well thus far.
Blackwood, has not change his vooping since debut.
I don't see how he can have long career vooping.
Hope need to realize his potential.
Chase needs to learn to play fast bowling.

Good test of Wondies batsmen against good bowling attacks.

You know I dont hate your team but would probably change the batting order to put Bonner at 3 and Hope at 4 and but Blackwood before Chase. Cornwall showed some improvement in batting in last series but he was not as penetrative as we would have liked to see. Maybe Chase does deserve a chance. i really dont hate your team at all. My only concern is whether Mayers is good enough to be a fourth seamer? That means he has to bowl at least 10-15 overs for the day. Otherwise we going in with 4 front line bowlers, 1 part time and 3 very occasional in Blackwood, Braffit and Bonner. Is that enough to take 20 wickets?

Massy 2021-06-09 22:24:08

You cannot leave out the form batsman
Therefore Hope is a bound to play
The only problem is where he bats .
The opening spot to partner Braitwaite is vacant but I feel it will be a mistake to play him as an opener .
He should bat at 3 and this should be his position in the batting order for the next 5 plus years
He talks like he has ironed out his fast bowling fears/ problems and I think he has too.

TanteMerle 2021-06-09 23:01:38

In reply to VoopsandOut

Wondies main issue of late is batting not bowling.
I believe that this team can take 20 wickets.

I copied and pasted Sylobaby team.
I do not paste for the batting order, just the 11.

Batting order.
1. Braffit
2. Powell
3. Hope
4. Bonner
5. Myers
6. Blackwood
7. Chase
8. Holder
9. Joshua
10. Roach
11. Seales

Correct bowling partnership, changes etc will work.
Cappo need to be flexible and attacking new batters.

Joseph re-modeled action has him spraying the ball.
Cornwall needs to play when he regains his form.

The wickets should be livelier than the two dead pitches in Antigua.

As I said before, I like your team, but I think that Powell may well have to sit for Cornwall. I can see a strategy of letting the 3 main fast bowlers bowl in short bursts to keep them as fresh as possible. Perhaps just 4-5 overs each per session. That means that to keep pressure on, we will need two frontline spinners to do the brunt of the work. On that strategy, Cornwall comes in for Powell.
