CWI chairman of selectors, Roger Harper, has defended the selection of young fast bowler Jayden Seales, despite the player’s lack of experience at the regional level.

With strike bowler Shannon Gabriel out of the upcoming series against South Africa, due to injury, the 19-year-old Seales made it into the final 13-man squad on the back of an impressive performance in the recent West Indies Best vs Best practice match.

The young fast bowler took five wickets overall, including a three-wicket burst that saw him remove the top order of West Indies Best B in the second innings.

“I saw a young bowler play in games where Test players and the best of our regional first-class players were playing and he performed exceedingly well, better than a number of players that have been playing first-class cricket over a number of years,” Harper told members of the media.

Selecting the young pacer just begins his professional career, now the harder aspect will be how to manage him and keep him motivated to perform consistently?

In reply to SlipfeelerMy problem with WIC is, they were able to bring down four international team but have not been able to put one domestic 4 day competition together so players could push for selection. They dropped our best batsman with the most test centuries but where do we send him to play so he could get his form? I have no problem with dropping Bravo but shouldn't there be our domestic competition like we see in England, so players could get back form?

I am happy for Sealles but I dare say that it's quite a risk to play a 19 year old with absolutely no first class experience. A bowler having a good practice match is not enough for test selection. We should have arranged to have our domestic competition in full blast so the players that failed to impress in the practice match could go back to the drawing board. Young man like Sealles should have been given first class opportunities to impress instead of pushing him in because he had a good day in a practice match. At the same time the likes of Joseph and others should have been given opportunities to earn their selection

[b]In reply to Sylobaby[/ Seales looks like a good young prospect but he should be rushed too quickly. But like the saying goes Beggars are no choosers, so with both Gabo and Chemar Holder out we have no choice. I hope they play him in the first test because alas we not getting wickets from An and Cornwall. In fact in the two test against Sri Lanka Joseph took 4/ 218 and Cornwall 4/220. Combined 8/438.Remember they both played on their home ground. How many matches can you win when That's what you getting from your main bowlers?
