I heard some terms in backyard cricket which were commonly used in Guyana. What terms did you guys use for similar situations
1. One tip, two tip= When batting you had two opportunities if your bat touched the ball to run to the other end and back, in order to continue batting. If you could not score a double then the next person took over the batting.
2.Get the ball bowl=If you fielded the ball then you were allowed to bowl
3. Out the man, bat=If you got the batsman out then you took over the batting
4.If you hit the ball out of the yard or you broke somebody's window, or the ball hit a passer by, then that was 6 and out.
P.S if you broke somebody's window then the game probably ended!!!!

We had the same in my primary school in Trinidad except it was tip and run. Once your bat touch the ball you had to run, not necessarily 2. All other rules were the same. You really only got to bat if you could get a wicket so fielding was important so you could get to bowl. That takes me back several decades. I suppose that 6 and out was invented to save the windows and it also meant playing lower risk shots along the ground. Quite the opposite to what we now see in cricket.

In my days in Trinidad, a "buss" window got you a good "cutarse" from your parents and if they were not around, then an older relative or sibling did the job!

So long...I dont even know if I remember them correctly today
Dukesy....you remember ..
- Bat up and ketch
- What is a grong itch?
- what is a dankey drap?
- What is a 'bam' ball?
In reply to Dukes
Dukesy....you ever played cricket with a ballata ball?
Who would be known as a 'ball oil'?
.If you hit the ball out of the yard or you broke somebody's window, or the ball hit a passer by, then that was 6 and out. In reply to Dukes
Definitely. This rule was a test of batting patience and discipline

In TT if yu hit the ball in a forbidden yard, the batsman had the responsibility to reacquire the ball.
A forbidden yard usually had one or two bad pothound dogs. Reacquiring the ball took courage , being nimble and fleet of foot.
Good entertainment for the other 21 players and supporters

3. Out the man, bat=If you got the batsman out then you took over the batting
ketchy pushy this is called in Ja. It is said that once George Headley batted for something like a week.

We played a similar game called, "Every lash, one" which meant every time you hit the ball you had to run one run. There was also, "Every lash, two" where you had to run two when you hit the ball. Those were fun games because nobody batted very long so everybody got a chance to bat.

We saved the balata ball match for the village about 2 villages down the road. They had a lot of mouth and the balata ball had a reputation for hitting your shin area quite hard. No pads used, of course.
another rule was lost ball win match. I think that this one was actually to encourage 6 hitting into the bush that lined the playground by my primary school. We were lucky in that we either had a proper bat or someone's father made a bat out of a piece of 1x4. Of course that led sometimes to take your bat or ball and leave when things hot going your way but that was pretty rare. We always used a flannel (tennis) ball, not coconut or anything like that except on the beach.

Bat up and ketch -I have heard the term but never played that
- What is a grong itch? -Heard the term but not sure exactly what it means
- what is a dankey drap? -I think a ball designed to hit the top pf the bails
- What is a 'bam' ball?-Bump ball where it is not a valid catch as the ball hit the ground before being caught
you ever played cricket with a ballata ball?-No,I played bumper ball(tennis ball, cork ball and eventually leather ball. When I was even smaller it was a piece of paper rounded into a ball shape with nuff rubber bands.
GLORIOUS DAYS!!!!!!!

- What is a grong itch?
- what is a dankey drap?
familiar with the three, grong itch was not in a cricket way.
I remember playing cricket on the road opposite the school.
We broke the school window and the headmaster came out on
the steps and shouted, $2 a pane boys, $2. I will never forget that.

Bannuhs the way you describe your playing days and knowledge of cricket suggest to me that you played only as aBACK STAP
And from that vantage point you knew when a bowler delivered a ROUND DE BATTY BALL

"Grong itch" is a bumper ball/underarm cricket term.. Normally when you bowl bumper ball underarm it bounces.. grong itch is when de bowler bowls it flat and fast without making the ball bounce.. it goes all the way to the batsman on the ground, making it harder for them to hit

And if any all you think all you bad ah gonna challenge you to a MAN TO MAN game ah cant wait to give you BUCKSICK...
You know how many bowlers get bucksick when I batting ??
In reply to CITYBOY
When yuh ready ah willing to accept that "man to man" challenge.. here are de rules:
1. One ova each.. extras and lbw aint playing.
2. Plumb in de trench/neighbor yard is 6 and out.
3. One man run count as two..
4. One bumpa per over
5. Lastly, yuh lost the ball or bruk the bat yuh buy it back!
When you ready shape up.. We gonna see who get bucksick, licks like peas for you rass

Never heard about grong itch but I know what is ground diggah.
Also with one tip, two tip: If you run two you have a run in the bank incase you hit one and cannot run.
In reply to Dukes
We played these games called first hop, second hop, and any-hop with a tennis ball when darkness was approaching. First hop - batsman was out if ball caught before touching the ground or after bouncing once. Second hop - same as first hop but batsman also out if ball caught after bouncing twice. Any hop - self explanatory
In my team those who sub for ball get first dibs at batting and bowling ...
In reply to Dukes
What about the Jack-a-bowler?
He's the one that bats on both sides (no, not talking bout those folks. Please).
In reply to camos
Wrong Headley batted for 4 days he alone turned up on day 5.

All you president visiting up here ..
Anyway game on. First game must be played on a concrete strip and with a bumpa ball( the compressed one) so when it knock you seeds you must cry murdah..
The wicket must be the top cover of a oil barrel and the bat must be 2 inches wide..
All we need is a wicket keeper.
And if it rains all the better as nothing better than playing bumpa ball
in bare buktah

"Bat up an' ketch" is catching practice.
"Grung itch" is jock itch. Were you thinking of "ground eater"?
"Dankey drap" is almost the same as "hap an' de drap" - a short of a length delivery that bounces nicely for a full-blooded cow lash over long on!!!
"Bam ball" is a corruption of "bounced ball".
Did you ever play French cricket?
In reply to Norm
I know for sure Guyana is the only country that produced a fast bowler with one leg..he was from Leg uan.. Get it .. leg one..
He was very fast.. he used to stand at the bowling crease and his son would run up and then give him the ball..
Is it Ground Itch or Ground Eetcha in my neck of the woods it was the latter.1tip2tip, I know of
the one with get de ball, bowl the ball outed batsman and your turn at bat was a different name for us too, something like fcuk I dont know now will get back on this later
Bat up and ketch is when you teammate get a soft out you go like Bhai you ah play bat up and ketch?
In reply to ducks
Yes Ketchy Shubby or Ketchy Pushi we called it. You field in strategic positions either to field the ball so you could bowl down the man or be where you know he's gonna hit the catch. Jamaica's two greatest batsmen have ketchy-shubby stories. Not only did no one turn up because Maas George couldn't get out but Yagga in his Youtube interview said this- I was walking by when the ball came my way and I caught it. They said little boy lemme bat fuh you. I said no I want to bat. Seems he batted the rest of lunch period so they told the sportsmaster. Yagga immediately made the team and was captaining in a few short yrs.
In reply to CITYBOY
Did he become a staunch Republican after he get hit really hard in he head? I think I know the chap ...

In reply to Dukes
Why are you spreading misinformation?
Tip me 2
Last man bat out
I see you captain first hand
Out first hop
Hit de house yuh out
In road cricket:
Bowling from only one end.
Stumps was a big oil drum, bowlers end was a big rock. Crease was measured as bat length+handle from stumps. Bat was made at home and looked like a large coucou stick.
Windball or tape ball.
No limit to the number of fielders.
If there was more than one ball there would be a number of bowlers, with the batsman receiving deliveries every 15 seconds or so.
There was a player designated to shout out: "Car coming".
Play was interrupted when a vehicle passed or the owner of the bat or ball "get call". I.e He mother tell he come home.

Ouch. Be nice. So the pain from being hit in de ( unmentionable)
make the unnamed person .... name himself BEAT DA BALL...
Oh well .. his position on field is now BACKSTAP .. he and Dukes can fight over that position ..
Almost like Reps versus Dems
