One of the greats of the game. But what is astonishing is Viv never wore a helmet.Never got hit either.Faced some of the fastest bowlers in the world...Thompson Lillee OZ...all he had was that maroon cap. That said would not recommend batsmen not having protection. It is important.Given what happened to Phillip Hughes.

Roland Butcher tells an interesting story regarding the rivalry between the batsmen and bowlers on Lloyd's team.
They can't wait to square off against each other in county cricket and the battles are fierce.
On this day, Jeff Thomson and Sylvester Clarke unleash some hostile fast bowling for Surrey against Somerset.
There are at least two bouncers every over and the Somerset openers are ducking, bobbing, weaving, hopping and jumping.
Then a wicket falls and in walks Viv Richards.
Suddenly, the same hostile fast bowling is being hooked and pulled so savagely within half an hour Thomson and Clarke stop bowling bouncers.

Saw an interview where Sobers said he ducked from a short one that never got up and it hit him. Said he never ever ducked to him again. Saw an interview where Ted Dexter recounts how with Gary's new found fame England was touring and knowing Fred they were laughing n geeing him up knowing the bouncer would come. Gary said his hook hit the upper deck of the stand while still climbing. He added Fred Trueman ran down and said 'Good F$#@ING shot lad' By Sobers' account Trueman never ever bowled another bouncer to him!

I listened to Sobers explain why he left the Police for another club. Said to get you to play for them police would have you join the band. So, batting for them he said he was late on a hook and it top-edged into his face and as a result he missed both band practice and games. When he returned he was accosted and asked why he didn't turn up. That altercation/disagreement led to the parting of ways.

Yea. I read that too

When did Sir Gary left Police?
I have only seen Sir Gary once playing for Police, that was at Kensington against Pickeick, Police had to win the match to be the 1st division championship.
I got a signed autograph ball from Sir Gary, who I was so mad with, for playing in that match.
I was so glad when Tony White bowled him for a duck.
I watched 1st division cricket as a boy, from 1957 to about 1963, before I joined clubs and played on Saturdays, only one game I can recall of Sir Gary playing local cricket.
Saida, Shoulda, Coulda,Hearda, Reada. Great speculations skunts.
It is what you will be forever, speculating and touting the cave age which never existed.
DEDING WID LAF ON DESPERATE WASTEUNDIES SKUNTS TO KEEP THE CAVE AGE SKUNTS RELEVANT, WHO WERE BEATEN BADLY BY KAPIL DEVILS IN 1983 WC FINAL.
