HEADLINE: Michael Holding to retire from cricket commentary

Michael Holding is set to bring to a close one of the most distinguished modern broadcasting careers when he hangs up his mic at the end of this season. Holding has been part of Sky Sports commentary team for over two decades now, a role he has fulfilled with at least as much distinction as his playing career. Holding is widely regarded as one of the game's greatest pace bowlers, playing 60 Tests and 102 ODIs for West Indies from 1975 to 1987, and becoming an integral part of the all-conquering West Indies' sides of the era.
He began his commentary career in 1988 in the Caribbean, and quickly brought the same grace to the commentary box as his run-up during his playing days, an approach so smooth it earned him the nickname of 'Whispering Death'. But Holding, 66, never held back from expressing some forthright opinions on the game, not least that he wouldn't commentate in domestic T20 leagues because he thought it wasn't cricket.

He has three homes, I think the one in Jamaica was sold sometime now. He actually lives between England and Cayman as well as owning property in Florida

Holding's cricket and commentary careers are indeed exemplary. Not sure if he would be successful as CWI prez. He is on record of constantly dissing T20 cricket arguably the most popular format of the game and currently WI most successful endeavour. He is inclined to be impulsive at times. His reaction towards Hooper's appointment as captain left a lot to be desired at the time. Does he have the patience and compromising skills to lead a very insular organization? His recent venture into the BLM debate garnered much praise and respect for himself. Perhaps he might be better off using his skills to serve as a PNP Senator. The party right now could do with his high profile and honest approach.

Michael Holding was one of the first commentators I ever heard. One of the best ever. All the best Mr. Holding.

Both as cricketer and commentator Holding excel......but his contribution to West Indies cricket has been negligible, post retirement..... although, he did some coaching in India MRF foundation.......his only trainee, who succeeded is Kes Williams....the best thing, would be open a fast bowling academy in Caribbean.....his in-depth knowledge in the art of fast bowling would help future generations in Caribbean cricket.....but at 66 years,he is too well off to come back to West Indies cricket.....Enjoy retire life ...Mr.Holding!!!!!

I met Michael Holding when he came to Toronto and conducted a fast bowling seminar. He is, in my view, a wonderful gentleman.
I admired him as a fast bowler and as a commentator. So I am saddened to see him leave as I think he is the best cricket commentator right now.
I wish Michael Holding all the best in his future endeavors.

My most enduring memory of Mikey Holding is not his 14 wickets at the Oval in 1976 or his legendary over to Geoff Boycott at Kensington Oval or his cleaning up Sunil Gavaskar for a 1st ball duck…instead it was a game he played against a Deryck Murray led T&T in a Shell Shield match at Sabina Park in 77 or 78 when he ran through a very strong batting line up to set up a strong response by Richard Austin and Everton Mattis who made 80 odd and 70 odd respectively . I remember the late great Tony Becca writing for the now defunct Daily News had a headline “BATTING BLITZ FOLLOWS PACE ONSLAUGHT”. 
That is etched in my memory for ever.

I agree with you totally in terms of the CWI Presidency.
Like many on this board I wish Mikey all the best in his future endeavors.I do not know if he plans to live in the Caribbean but if he does it would be fantastic if he could hold a few fast bowling clinics.

Holding has much better things to do that pick up a poisoned chalice as president of WI cricket board.
That office is for politicians and there are many of that cloth in the Caribbean.
Leave him be to enjoy a happy retirement.

The commentary team will not be the same. There are no other West Indian in commentary today who has the ability and fearlessness to tell the truth as Mikey has.
Bishop, who gets global gigs, tend to stay away from anything remotely controversial and will rarely ever voice his opinion in matters that may seem critical to the BCCI.
Ganga is quickly making a name for himself and he brings the on-field captaincy on the commentary, but like Bishop, he shuns controversy.
