Actually holding has given some insights into Marlon's character and outlook. He once said that Marlon used to receive Mathematics lessons from his wife. And he also said that Marlon once said "Test cricketers don't need subjects" which is a very revealing statement

Not only Marlon felt this way.I knew some guys who said they had 2 GCE , cricket and football.

indeed. I guess for some of our players its either or. I remember reading about the 1973 visit of Australia to the WI......and all those cats were professionals orc in very stable jobs. Max Walker was an architect, lillee worked in a bank, another guy was an accountant. Im thinking the discipline of the formal school system must help with discipline and analysis of the game.

Once Fazeer was upset that a WI cricketer(a TTO cricketer) told him that the last book he read was a comic book .

I full endored your remarks, We need programs in the academies to assist our players for life after cricket or football.

Indeed. Although I think that our cricketers are a lot more business savy now. Carlos owns a successful sports company, which might be risky but it obviously works for him. Both Gayle and Russell own restaurants. Bravo talks and sings like a five year old but even he opened a fancy tecording studio in POS. But its to get our players to make the right decisions in the field is an issue. We need them to assess situations, not try to bash everything or believe they could blow away sides with just pace alone. Cant blow away teams with pace alone, unless your Mitchell Johnson and your action gives the batsman little time to see the ball.

if I 'm mistaken but I'm kinda sure that Marlon Samuels got a football scholarship to attend Kingston College hence his mindset on academic subjects

I want you to mention anyone of recent times who the ICC has been wrong about when charging someone with corruption in cricket. When they reach this phase, it is usually that they have enough evidence to convict and impose sentence. That Samuels is already an offender does no favors to him

I remember we had a doctor trini playing for us in the 4-days. I think his name was Tijan Maraj. Also think Ian Bradshaw was a trained accountant

In reply to Jabari18

My mums worked with his cousin. Was i Uni at the time. Tijan could have gone much further but the I guess the lack of security of a cricketer in the pre IPL, pre-retainer days would have made him make education his first priority. Who can blame him. I think his wife is also a doctor and actually treated George Bovell after he got in that accident prior to the 2008 Olympics

I do know Deryck Murray used his Packer money to study Industrial Econonics at a university in the UK. And Michael Holding is a computer programmer by qualification and worked with Barclay's for quite a few years during his cricket career

Brerzerk 2021-09-24 17:32:25

Yes Marlon did gon to KC via football scholarship.
b. Holding discontinued UWI after Packer (got scholarship from Manley Govt after 75_76 Oz tour) he worked in the banks data processing dept. right out of high school

c. Murray's debuted under Frank Worrell at age 21
He went straight to Cambridge after and played for comb Univ then Warwickshire l. He only came back to the WI in about '74 vs. England when Rowe made 302. Can't remember if he played vs. Oz '73.

I think Murray went to Oxford or Cambridge long before Packer came into cricket.

Dessie only played vs. India I think. Findlay vs. Oz perhaps. In an interview Yagga said after Sobers came and went for a duck he was joined by Murray on about 270. He played a 'tired' shot and Murray walked down and said 'Yagga we were talking in the dressing room that a knock like this deserves to be 300.' That is what motivated Yagga to carry on. When the interviewer praised Yagga he asked 'Didn't you see the lil man at the other end (Kalli)?

Yagga-'When Grieg started bowling half-cutters I drove but only got a thick edge to thirdman. I walked down and asked Kalli what happened there. Kalli-'Boi, he bowling yuh drifters; single 'im n gi mi' Yagga did just that and the minute the drifter pitched Kalli on-drove them for 4's. It was when taking one of those quick singles to rotate strike that Grieg shoved Kalli and called him a BLACK BASTARD!!!!

Murray is one of the few men who came back to play tests a decade or more after their debut.

Do you have sports scholarship at High School ?

Do you have sports scholarship at High School ?
in Jamaica yea...you'll be in a class and a young new guy/girl student sits beside you out of the blue at the start of a school term. You may have passed the common entrance exam to go to that high school but he or she will be there for their sporting abilities, cricket, football and especially athletics.

Saw on the MB quite a few times Croft mentioned as a pilot. When I played against him (club level), knew he was an Air Traffic Controller. Looked at some material which confirmed he did qualify as a pilot and flew the Tobago air bridge route.
Most players who went on to represent WI were well qualified in various disciplines. A handful of very promising players became doctors in the medical field. They could not allow damage to their hands to derail their medical careers, as such chose not to play at an elite level.

Some high school sports scholars actually pass common entrance and are what we call "bought" from their previous school to another. Ottey, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Allan "Skill" Cole, Herbert "Dago" Gordon all "bought" by Vere in different era's. Vere was notorious for that...still is. Others are just identified from primary, Junio-high and clubs. Other islands could adopt that approach for a win/win maybe.

Not the point.Someone is charged with a crime is innocent untill proven guilty. Is that so hard to understand?.Its childish to delight in idle gossip like a bunch of grim ghouls gossiping in someone's misfortune.
