Ian Bishop, who was born today

1967

His presence in the commentary box makes it easy to forget that Ian Bishop, who was born today, is still relatively young. He reached 100 Test wickets in only his 21st Test and there was no limit to what he might have achieved had back problems not messed up his career. At his peak Bishop was fluent and hostile, but he was increasingly hamstrung by injuries. His last great performance came in the first match of his second comeback, when he took 5 for 32 at Headingley in 1995. That was his sixth five-for in 19 Tests, but he toiled through another 24 without claiming a seventh, before giving in to the inevitable after England's 1997-98 tour of the Caribbean.

Happy Birthday Bish.....

Happy Birthday, Bish! Never to be forgotten among the great pacemen from the Windies despite his short career.

I'll never forget three things about Bish.
a. How he and Walsh had the Indian top-order literally running and accused of running by skipper Vengsarkar who himself was running! Their spells compared to Marshall and Garner on a Sunday at 'Bina also when Jeremy Coney's hand was broken.

b. His 1st ball to Langer on debut when he Klunked him.

c. When he was either a debutant or in his debut series (odi) and with four needed off the last ball he expertly picked his spot and launched the ever tight Angus Fraser for four also at Sabina.

Intelligent man who has disappointed me a coupla times in the commentary box.

But always meaning well, I think. He never strikes me as a commmentator with a personal agenda. In a world where opinions are infinite, we can never agree with all of his opinions. He is a genuine Caribbean sporting icon.

I remember seeing Jeremy Coney in the X-Ray department at UWI sitting on the bench with a forlorn look on his face waiting for the results of his X-Ray.I was surprised that he was on his own so I went up to him and spoke with him.

When we heard crack ( although way in the Headley Stand and he was at the commentary box/ Blue Mountain end) we were yelling "Teef!" He was writhing in pain but we thought it was the bat splice. Rain fell for 1hr. right at tea do they knew they could go fill out as Monday was rest day. Replacing Coney was 18yr. old Rutherford. 3rd or so ball from Macko was short but never got up. He ducked right into hit, hit smack in the grille
