HEADLINE: Bonner achieves goal after scoring unbeaten 166 in Team Blackwood's 384-6

Despite scoring an unbeaten century for Team Blackwood on day two of the BestvBest match at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua on Thursday, Nkrumah Bonner said spending time at the crease was more important to him as he prepares for the West Indies’ upcoming tour to Sri Lanka later this year.

Bonner, resuming on his overnight score of 90 went onto score 166 not out as Team Blackwood, resuming from 234-4, declared at 384-6. The 32-year-old Jamaican, who had faced 200 balls on Wednesday, faced an additional 166 balls during which struck an additional 10 fours.

During his marathon stay at the crease, Bonner found a useful partner in Raymon Reifer as the pair put on 134 for the fifth wicket before the latter was run out for 72. Jahmar Hamilton was dismissed by Jayden Seales next over but Bonner and Alzarri Joseph (5 not out) added another 31 runs before the declaration came.

“It was difficult at the start but as I batted it got easier. Obviously, it is similar conditions to what I am going to get in Sri Lanka,” said Bonner after his eight-and-a-half hour stay at the crease.

Keep focus Bonner, spend time at the wicket and the runs will come.

Bonner scoring a big 100 in a practice game may seem insignificant to many but these things are what WI batsmen need to do in regional games and games like this set your self little golds such as amount of time spent at the crease and leaving the ball
and most importantly learn to bat spin

I am concurring with you but many cannot see the big picture.

Thats what Kraigg did for 14 minutes short of 5 hours and then retire.

Kraigg is trying to work on his form by spending time at the wicket. I commend CWI for been so proactive as to provide test players with some form of match practice, unlike the previous administration that just call up a test team two weeks before the actual test match. Thats unsustainable, if we are looking to increase our test ranking.

The same way we could host Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa during the pandemic, we could also host our domestic first class games in one venue , so we would not only see players that keep failing in test cricket on a Blackwood team verses a Brathwaite team but we would see 12 players from Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, leewards and windwards competing for a West Indies selection. That method is completely nonsense and sure does not help the present and future development of our players and team.

Here is a disturbing quote from Bonner after scoring 166 in a Best vs Best practice game:
“Obviously, it is similar conditions to what I am going to get in Sri Lanka,”
So in other words just from this one inning Bonner knows his pick to Sri Lanka is sure.
That I have a problem with because as I type at 10:40 pM, I am following the Australian Domestic league where several games have been played, a few batters have scored double centuries and big hundreds, some new names, are knocking doors while some bowlers have taken ten wickets in a game and several five fors; yet no one knows if they will be picked on the senior Australia team. Bonner in just one inning knows he has picked himself to tour. I’m not saying he’s wrong but just embarrassing to see how low our cricket has fallen. No regional tournament the last 3 years and all players have to do is have one or two good dayt in a practice match and they know they have been selected on the West Indies team

Let me bring you up to speed, because I watch both the Aussies and New Zealand matches.
Playing Shield and Plunket cricket, is just like playing regional cricket.
Bonnar would not had said that, if he was playing for Jamaica.
This is a camp, players may have been notify of selection, others are there to provide practice

You do realise that Bonner is already part of the test squad. Has he done anything to be dropped from the test squad so that he should not expect to continue being part of the test squad? You are comparing Bonner to NZ and AUS players who are looking to get into a squad and not players who are already in the squad and looking to sharpen their form.

Our batting or lack thereof has beern always our problem.

Any batsman who makes 166 will be on my West Indies side, whether the was already in the team or not.

Why don’t you guys take your time to read and understand? I have nothing against what Bonner said and I know it was just a practice game. What I am upset about is the new norm of the selection of our test team. I am saying we should have our regional tournament going so we could have more players pushing for selection. Now if after our selection selectors selected 30 players and in a practice game Bonner scored runs I would be much happier. But knowing it’s over 3 years since we had our domestic competition and now selectors selecting a team on the basis of 3 years ago has me upset because clearly our young talents that didn’t impress back then don’t get a chance to develop their talent. I think of people like a young lad I think from the Leeward or windwards by the name of Atanaz, who got a good century for West Indies under 19

In reply to b4u8me2 My point is, since 2019 we have hosted several international teams and have toured Eng, New Zealand and Bangladesh. So we don’t have a problem with covid 19. Meanwhile Australia, England, New Zealand and others still have their domestic competition. So why since 2018 we can’t have our own regional tournament so our players won’t just have one practice game to impress? My problem is with lark of cricket or NO cricket for 3 years

Sylobaby Oct 30, 2021, 3:21:59 PM

@ opening and others, I realized you all must have missed this last part of my comment and somehow all you think I was criticizing Bonner. So here is the part you missed which is the meet of my comment.

I’m not saying he’s wrong but just embarrassing to see how low our cricket has fallen. No regional tournament the last 3 years and all players have to do is have one or two good days in a practice match and they know they have been selected on the West Indies team.

I am not upset with Bonner for saying this but rather upset with our cricket that has fallen the last three years. I am a Bonner fan but just want to see more regional cricket and more players given an opportunity to impress

With no 4-day cricket being played, players going to Sri Lanka maybe notify, in order to prepare them for the tour.
There is a camp and two practice matches, you expect to select a squad from two practice matches?

Basically, the man is saying we should have had our regional cricket competition to give us more options and better practice! We have tournaments with different teams coming to the region so why no regional games after 2 years - COVID is not an excuse but I guess money is!

So why not just say that and comment on that? Why did you single out Bonner's comment and criticize his comment as being disappointing if your issue was not with his comment? You blame others for not understanding your point but it appears you are the one who have a difficulty expressing your own point.

What you also fail to understand is that even if we had a domestic competition it would not be for Bonner to prove himself in said competition because he has not yet don't anything to deserve being dropped from the test squad. So even if he failed to make a run in a Regional competition he would still not be dropped until and if he fails at the test level. Same would happen if we had a regional competition and Roach failed to take a wicket and goes for 3000 runs. He would still be selected in the test squad because he has been out best test bowlers for a few series now. Regional competitions are not used to select players who are already main members of the Test, ODI, or T20I squads. They are used to select players needed to fill a gap in the relevant squad.

I really think you confused your point by naming Bonner and what he said as your basis for expressing your point of view.

Has he done anything to be dropped from the test squad

Outside of his one series against Bangladesh when he shone, Bonner has had one innings of note…..113 not out against Sri Lanka

He averages 39 in test cricket from 7 test matches and 12 innings. On the surface, a sure pick

Except

While he did extremely well against Bangladesh in Bangladesh and had a good average against Sri Lanka, that series was deceptive. He had one innings where he scored a century. Outside of that, he failed.

He was exposed against quality fast bowling against South Africa and Pakistan.

So is he a sure pick? Hell no IMO.

Good that he scored runs in this latest practice match which will likely secure his place on the squad. But he, like Kyle Mayers and all other WI batsmen, have a long way to go to move beyond being one eyed kings in the land of the batting blind.

Of course he is a sure pick. He is a sure pick not because he is a batting great next to Lara - he is a sure pick because he has not done anything yet to say he is a sure drop. Until and unless Bonner fails enough for the selectors to say someone needs to replace him, then of course he should be a sure pick.
