FORMER TRINIDAD and Tobago cricket team all-rounder and manager, Roland Sampath believes Cricket West Indies (CWI) must implement more stringent measures to ensure the best players are available regularly and to avoid players using West Indies conveniently.
West Indies were forced to field an inexperienced team in a three-match T20 series against Pakistan, which ended on Thursday. Pakistan swept the series 3-0.
West Indies missed several seasoned campaigners due to covid19, injury and personal reasons.
“A matter of concern is that a lot of the so called big guns (for) whatever reason did not make the tour and they are playing cricket, for example in Australia. You can play wherever you want, but you can’t play conveniently for West Indies,” Sampath said.

and personal reasons.
That equals security reasons and should have been explained as such.
Pakistan is still a dangerous place to tour with thousands of misguided youngmen hoping for glory and 72 virgins.

I agreed with Dave C. and I agree that players should not be picking and choosing when and where they want to play.
There is a risk that once players become high-profile they will do the same as Russell and Simmons. When that occurs you get the same result as the Pakistan tour.
How can CWI negotiate higher fees when the representative team consists of mainly unproven players at that level?
Why don't England, India, Australia have this problem?
No vision .... by occur high-profile players.

Roland, you are so disingenuous with your statement. We butted heads over this before and you are back misleading the fans inspite of what President Skerritt said.
Quote from President Skerritt, "In a perfect world CWI would like players to choose West Indies before other leagues ----- we would like to believe that it is country above self, West Indies above leagues and so on but our policy is very straightforward since I have come to the fore bearing in mind the legal situation". You remember those words Sir? I am sure you do.
Mr Skerritt went on to say and I quote, "The courts told CWI that they can't prevent players from plying their trade elsewhere if they are not contracted". Remember those words from the President? I am sure you do. He further stated "Players will not be penalized for choosing leagues over West Indies cricket. This is where we differ with the previous administration. Players will not be punished. Selectors will not become disciplinarians, selectors will pick the best available players who want to play at that time or who are obligated as in the case of contracted players". Those are the exact words of the President which you are aware of.
To come on this forum knowing the facts and state half truths which can lead less informed fans to view the person currently playing in Australia negatively is stroking the fire of hatred a bit and you should stop it because you are doing more harm than good to West Indies cricket. At this very moment, President Skerritt, VP Shallow and Director Adams are all working assiduously to bring WI cricket back to the top and they are doing an excellent job.
The person you are maligning is not contracted to CWI. Put forward cogent ideas to convince CWI to offer this person a contract for US $981,400, the amount he got for representing Kolkata Knight Riders, add US $50,000 the amount he got for 15 days in the LPL and add over US $170,000 he will get for playing in the BBL. Combined amount is for less than three months work.
You listened every Tuesday afternoon to Mason and Guest where the VP graciously gives of his time explaining over and over the financial strain CWI is under and yet you Sir, a person respected within the circle of administrators, comes on this forum to foment hate towards our players.
Being malevolent should not be a part of your exercise, leave that to people like DisCourtesy.
Thanks.

He quoted the author of the article out of context. This is what Sampath said:

You are a poster that exhibits a level of intellect that is admirable so why such a silly question?
The President is straightforward and clear. If a player is
NOT contracted to CWI, he can choose wherever he wants to play.

A player not contracted could so do, conversely, CWI does not have to pick said player, ent?

The reality is that some of our best players choose to play franchise cricket over playing for the West Indies because they are rewarded handsomely. When a player can earn how many times over what they earn for the regional team, loyalty goes out the window. I believe that t20 cricket has really contributed to the downfall of cricket in the Caribbean in all forms. Carlos Brathwaite is an example of such. Carlos has two half centuries against Australia. After that 2016 World Cup, it was all downhill from there. The mindset was I am a six hitter, and the swiping began.

They are actually very loyal when World Cup comes around. I think that's the gist of this discussion ...

I dont think you are true about Carlos.
I dont think you are true about T20 cricket contributing to the downfall of cricket, either, however arguable that may be.
I think it was a boon for our players. But as usual we get processes wrong.
Fans on here tell players to forget about WIcricket and to seek their fortune when young so players listen and off they go. Nothing wrong with that at all. The issue is expectation. They expect to walk back or into the team. They should be made to understand that they are not automatic picks
Now back to getting the other process wrong- the reason or one of the reasons we cant pay players like others do is becos we are small market meaning we have a small live attendance, and we think small.
The money in cricket is not the live audience but TV and other kinds of viewership and animated gaming. Develop good players and the viewship and gaming will come.
We do not think big at all. We are not innovative. We copy now when we used to be trend setters.
Oz copied our style of cricket in the 80,90s and made it their own and we copied the English from the 70s.
We should be freely showing our glory days on TV everywhere in the Caribbean. Have ex players talk about what cricket meant to them and how it made them famous etc.
In short make the game more accessible and attractive to youngsters.
But that is not all - good management on the field and off the field, looking to invent plays and making cricket excitable
Make the bloody a business- a profession

Isnt this the same concept Dave Cameron was vilified for trying to implement?
This is what happens when players are allowed to feel as though they are larger than the game. Some said only money can fix this
..interesting, there is not enough money in West Indies cricket to satisfy the itching pockets of our self proclaimed stars
. So I guess this is not fixable

Not always, why doesn't Narine make himself available. Furthermore, most players want to play at the highest level. It also puts them in the window for tbe IPL.

I watched Sir Garfield talking to some West Indies players and he broke down crying because of the current state of our cricket. There are players that would be fully committed to the cause but the reality is that money talks.
