One of the most gifted cricketers to come out of the Yard
Mike Graham 16 hours ago
This piece is woefully inadequate, Herbert deserves a lot more. All of us need to forgive our brother for the "sins" that he committed so many years ago in playing cricket in South Africa for money. It was wrong at the time and his ban was his punishment. Yet most Jamaicans continued to apply social pressure to these men long after the ban had ended. The other islanders who went to South Africa were forgiven by their people a long time ago and some even came back and played cricket for WI again, but not ours. We still hate them, even though Mandela forgave the white South Africans for centuries of crime against the black population.
Herbert did great service for Jamaica in the field of cricket.
NB. Never met the man or even watch him play cricket, but he is Jamaican that represented all of us quite well. Let us forgive him and release him from his pain, let us bring him back into the fold before it is to late.

Youre absolutely right
I remember a Yard Shell Shield team with a combination of these legends who couldnt lay a hand on the title
shows how strong 1st class cricket was back in the 60s and 70s
Everton Mattis
Basil Williams
Richard Austin
Yagga Rowe
Herbert Chang
MLC Foster
Anthony Campbell/Desmond Lewis/Jeff Dujon
On another note I watched Herbert Chang play a match at Church Teachers College in Mandeville in front of a massive crowd
he carted the bowling to all parts of the ground in one of the most brilliant displays of batting Ive ever seen

No one enjoyed batting with him in Bim because he would rile up the fast
bowlers. Fos gave an account where Chang came out to bat while Garner was
bowling. He marked his guard and said, "Lord Jesus a how dem ago out mi
tideh".
This got the bowler upset and he hurled a bouncer at him .
The Korean ducked under the Garner bouncer and said, "aye long boy, you see
any wicket up deh so."

Eastern American I think was, based primarily in LI and Queens. He played for Westbury alongside Ray Winter, Ken Williams and Daley. CC poster JamMack I think played for that club as well during the mid 80s.

wonder when that pic was taken. Happy to see he doesn't look as bad as Danny Germs did.
Time to forgive if not forget... we must never forget.

There's a great book called ' The Unforgiven' by an Australian called Ashley Grey. It deals around the two banned tours to South Africa and the unique thing about the book.
All members of the squad is given a chapter to personally express their views around this controversial moment in our cricketing history.
Some like Bernard Julien failed to interact with the writer but most do.
Herbie Chang and Richard Austin stories were quite interesting to me. Have a read, it's worth it.

Mark Nieta was not a part of that vaunted batting lineup during the 70s. He was still in high school and turning out for the Jamaica U19 team. Late in th be decade I think he did get an odd game when some of the senior players were unavailable. Yagga and Danny Germs were with Packer and Basil Williams and Chang were eith th he replacement West Indies team to India.

In reply to Ewart Ewart, funny but true, that Kensington with that batting line up of Lewis (Desmond),Austin, Rowe, Basil Williams and Chang did not win one (1) single Senior Cup. Can't remember that group terrorizing any bowling line ups with huge scores.
Herbert Chang announced himself in the Jamaica vs Australia tour match in 1973,where he tore Dennis Lillee apart at Sabina Park with a polished 64 on that Saturday afternoon.
