story just sounds like serious poaching, Nasser Hussain in the sky sports studio just said that a touring party was in the Caribbean saw this young man's talent and on the spot gave him a cricketing scholarship to go to the UK and the rest is history..That don't sound like fair play or sounds too right to me

I am tired writing about Arsenal giving my wife's cousin a scholarship when he was 13 years.
Whether it is Basketball, cricket, soccer or any other sports, scouts are all over the world, looking for young talent, for clubs
Bethell team mate Che Simmons did not make the U-19 team, but they both play for WARWICKSHIRE.
These guys are from the Franklyn Stephenson academy.

just saying he made for the windies under 15 i'am guessing, so doesn't our board have a say about this guy accepting a scholarship for ulterior motives.

At that age...PARENTS RULE.

You can almost fill in the script.

He said when he saw the facilities in England and the opportunities...( as much as he missed home) He stuck it out.

Which Parent would turn down this opportunity Raggs?

I am not sure if you followed the Lord Gavron Schorlships, which is awarded to two youngsters annually, A Brathwaite guy won it in its infancy, he went to school in England, played for a county, studied engineering, and he is now living in England.
Bethell and Che Simmons have English roots, which parent would stop their son or daughter from getting an education and be paid for it?

These youngsters are not living in Cuba , Russia or China.

BCA better get a handle on the young players being developed locally. They better start background checking for ties to England or the poaching will continue. Cannot pour money into developing youths for the Brits to walk in and take them. Let the parents take them before that then. Gotta find some way of combating the cricket colonialism. As usual they taking our wealth for themselves.

I prefer to look at what best for my child, there is no different between you leaving Bim for the USA and a youngster leaving to study and work in England.
West Indies cricket will survive, it need people with vision, who will give youngsters and parents a choice.

With the amount of people who left the region for England more than 70 years ago, you would think that WICB/CWI, would be the place for a number of players.
Do any of your children play cricket and would like to represent us?

Heard some of the interview.

There is some hope that he may play for the WI as an adult but we all know that is a huge stretch.

Bethel will escape the colour teasing and at worst get the Bajan accent quip ...

His GrandFather Arthur Bethel is my former Boss- a good man.

Arthur of Course played for the West Indies

it is a good point, look at the ammount of French born players playing with the old colonial countries like Senegal and Camaroon in the African Nations Cup.

I am always amaze by how some of us who left the region, don't want others to do what best for them.
If CWI had a product that youngsters and parents love, thing would be different.
Youngsters are staying far away from cricket.

The Caribbean is a consumer of all thing s foreign.

From BasketBall to every other distraction...Cricket is just a part of the lifestyle and not so much.

IF we beat the world consistently again... the return of cricket as the Main attraction will be there.

too many West Indians are always cussing the sport and speaking death and negativity over it...so...there you go.

I am the only one in my family that follow cricket, five of my older siblings went to England, not one child or grand know anything about cricket, the same goes for the few in bim.

CWI should petition the ICC to institute solidarity payments as FIFA does in football. In football, when a player registers as a professional for the first time in a country other than the one where they grew up, the new club is responsible for paying Training Compensation to every club that contributed to their development from ages 12-21, and in a more limited format from 21-23. These payments are calculated on a sliding scale based on the region of the world and the caliber of the club involved.

is that due to Cricket being more a private school sport in England.
There has to be some social reasons as to why descendants of the Caribbean do not partake in England when you think of the history.
Racial prejudice i would suggest.

on the post someone made about Dukes supporting young Thorne I stressed that it is time that Caribbean people go back to investing in cricket. Viv and Andy were sent to coaching school by an Antiguan businessman. JA and BDS teams toured England because local boards got businesses to sponsor them. It was even a business that paid Viv's fare to go to Bim where he witnessed Rowe's 302, begged Yagga for his batting gloves, went home and torched 'Yagga' into his gate. That is the kind of inspiration special efforts and moments witnessed evoke.

They are more into soccer, my nephews in Bim play Basketball.
About 10 years ago, I saw a group playing I joined them, out of the seven that was playing only one plays cricket, and he was a Guyanese farmer.
Five of them said they were part of their school swim team.

Payment similar is paid to CWI/Boards and local clubs.
A player like Hetmyer playing in the IPL, CWI, The GCB and his local club receives money from him playing, I am not aware if the same applies to players playing in other leagues, or if 10 or 20% of the Player's earning is deducted to pay the various entities.
