CONSISTENT performances in the West Indies Four-Day Championship serve as a pre-requisite for possible selection to the regional Test team for upcoming tours.
So says Cricket West Indies (CWI) lead selector Dr Desmond Haynes, who affirmed that once players prove their worth in domestic competition, their chances for potential selection to the senior team increase.

This thread is for fans that think a couple of fifties is consistent

This thread is for people who know Haynes full of shit
Because if Devon Smith make a million runs, or Imran Khan takes a bucket of wickets, neither of them still wont get selected.

THEIR CHANCE INCREASE doesn't mean the WILL or even SHALL get picked. Surely that is one of many factors.

Then one o could ask, whats the point of the FC competition if the leading performers in that competition dont get selected to the test team
Like Permaul
And Devon Smith before him
And Nikita Miller
And and and

Haynes shud really stop making dese utterances. What consistent white ball performances did he base his selection of Roach on?

There comes a time where performance is ignored, just look at Mark Ramprakash, Easton McMorris, Peter Lashley and Devon Smith
How many heisman trophy winners get cut before the season start,
Have a look at all our great players, all of the average over 40, with tremendous performances year after year in the regional competition.
Dessie is speaking from experience, I will go after him, if he continue picking a player with a regional average in the twenties, because he scored a ton, in this regional competition.
Performance and consistency should be the motto.

Good interview...... Performance in regional league should be the criteria......Dessie will slowly but surely get his way pass the other selector cum head coach Simmons and impose his stamp in moulding the team on merit......,intersting to hear that captain supported Campbell inclusion in the team... although captain do not have voting power ...,his opinion ....matters.....way forward....

some men behaving as if the man said that'd be the only criterion.
over the history of WI cricket seasoned club and FC players have always played in teams for many reasons.
To mentor others, love of the game etc. When player/coach Freddo dropped a young 'un opened and thrashed JA for a double what do you think he was doing?

Devon Smith as recent as 3 years ago?
Miller?

Consistency matters, not a one off.
In response to a question ask to Sir Everton by a close Antigun friend, as to why Viv was selected ahead of Jim Allen, Sir Everton said, When Jim was scoring the occasional hundred, Viv was consistently scoring fifties, why we see now, Viv is scoring hundreds and Jim is scoring the occasional fifty.

5 games split over 4 months after such a long break isn't enough either.
There needs to be an 'A' Series of some sort to get some of these guys like Athanaze and Carty more games to work on their technique.

If Chase doesn't perform with the bat, it may be time to give Reifer a chance. Who is with me on this?

Is Permaul not in the test squad and Miller retired from regional cricket?
Devon selection would be like your betting at a horse race.
How many more test should this guy fail, for Larr to see the bar is too high.

Devon Smith
A belligerent left-handed opening batsman from Grenada, Devon Smith was drafted into the West Indies squad ahead of the Test series against India in March 2002, after making 750 runs for Windward Islands in the Busta Cup, though he made his debut 13 months later against a far tougher opponent. In his first Test, against Australia, Smith scored a blazing 62 in a losing cause, but failed to score in the next Test. A good eye compensates for his lack of footwork and throughout the series he showed promise, but it wasn't enough, and he was dropped to smooth off the rough edges. In 2004, he was selected to open against England, and he immediately pulled his team out of a hole with a stroke-filled century. But just as he began to settle into a groove, a freak net injury left him with a fractured thumb, and he missed the next two Tests. He was axed after another failure in the Test series against Australia in 2005-06 and spent two years in the wilderness. He returned to play in the one-dayers against India in 2006-07 and was picked for the World Cup squad where his form was solid rather than spectacular. He failed to move out of first gear against England in 2007, and he followed with a horror tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa that was only saved by his ODI career-best 91 in Johannesburg.
He was dropped again in 2009, but came back to prominence during the 2011 World Cup during which he opened in the absence of an injured Adrian Barath. Smith scored his maiden one-day hundred in West Indies' group match against Ireland and got two more half-centuries in the tournament.

Smith was selected as an opener for the 2011 World Cup when Barath was injured and made his maiden ODI ton against Ireland. He did well against India too, but his dismissal prompted a collapse that saw his side losing the game. After the World Cup, he was sorted out by Mohammad Hafeez as he fell to him 5 times during the course of the ODI and the test series. Due to his glaring weakness against off spinners coming from round-the-wicket, Smith was completely found out by both Hafeez and earlier by Swann.
The selectors lost patience with Smith after his horror show against Hafeez when he repeatedly fell either LBW or bowled and was dropped from the side after the opening test of the Pakistan series.

Look guys have a listen to this there's countless tours coming up including A-Team tours, a possible Caribbean T20 again, Tours against Aus, NZ, Bangladesh, not to mention another T20 World Cup!!!
If we can't separate the men from the boys by the end of this year there is no hope for our cricket!!!

Brooks has a test batting average of 28
Mayers has a test batting average of 35. Given that at the beginning of his test career, he scored an unbeaten test double century, without that stellar innings, his test batting average since then is worse than Devon Smiths
How many more tests should rhey fail for you to see the bar is too high?

Look at their test averages, it is just as bad or worst
I am not here to be an advocate for any Barbadian player, I am not related to any
You should notice that I can walk and chew gum at the same time, being able to critique Kraigg a player I have followed from Grass root cricket.
BTW, Oval wrote about Brooks when he was posting, he is a smaller version of Sir Carl.
He is love by the Barbados fans.

Who said anything about Barbadian players?
I quoted stats for 2 batsmen. The majority of the team is Barbadian and that has been the case when Holder was captain
Stop throwing red herrings, Focus, and answer the question.

Bro, you can replace the players mention with any of the batsman selected and others in the region, there is no consistency or players with FC average over 40 to have a discussion about.
I am a fan of Kraigg by the data he provided at every level

Thanks for the share,
Wow, that's a lot of cricket, really wishing all involved from players to the association all the best.
I'm excited to see more cricket and the involvement and growth of the game.
Got a much better understanding of the reason for the split of the First Class season.

Some posters criticize not on facts but only on the nationality of the speaker.....Dessie just assumed the office of Head Selector...He pointed out the criteria for selection HENCEFORTH......Dessie can be hold responsible , if he diverge .... can't be held responsible for Miller or Devon...Each one responsible for his own tenure.... whether Dessie succeed or not ...is altogether another issue...

The only consistent regional performer is Devon Smith, he is like the fastest runner in Barbados, good at the local level, and can hardly make the semis at the Olympics.

and most of the season is after the first Test series for the year. I suppose he meant that they will be considered for later series but this one is a done and dusted deal.
