What was the most lethal spell of fast bowling

imusic 2022-04-15 23:15:47

You’ve seen?

Lethal as in fastest. I don’t mean literally so please to leave out Phil Hughes tragedy.

Pace that had batsmen running.

So many memorable ones

Thompson vs WI in Oz 75/76 and with Bobby Stimpson’s Australia in 79? That afternoon at Kensington

Holding vs Boycott at Kensington

Brett Lee vs Lara at QPO

Holding and co vs India at Sabina Park

Holding vs Brian Close in England

Mitchell Johnson vs England in Oz

Jofra Archer vs Steve Smith in England

Hard to pick just one……but if I had to pick one….it would be Holding and co against India

I never actually saw it…..but it had to be something.

Also didn’t see Thompson against the cream of WI batsmen that afternoon that had Desmond Haynes rooted to the non strikers end. Heard it on the radio tho.

Of those that I’ve seen……hard to beat Jofra Archer and Mitchell Johnson

This one was peerless according to eyewitnesses

I do not find repeated fast short pitched bowling entertaining.
You bowl one or two fast short pitched deliveries to freeze the batsman's feet and then you bowl a full length delivery just outside the off stump and because his foot are heavy he does not get to the pitch and edges it to the wicketkeeper or slips.that is what I enjoy. Not hurting and maiming batsmen.

imusic 2022-04-16 01:02:21

In reply to Dukes

I won’t say that I enjoy watching fast bowlers hurting and maiming batsmen.

I will say that I find it fascinating though

Look at that Aussie dressing room.

Would you have EVER imagined that sort of reaction from ANY Aussie team?

The guys to come weren’t the top of the order either.

Brerzerk 2022-04-16 01:23:40

'83, hadn't seen WI live for a while so was surprised how much faster than Roberts n Hoding Macko had become and they were still very fast. Going around the wkt to Gavaskar was frightening. I was worried Sunil would've been injured. He nicked off to Duj.

More fast than deadly- '78- Basil Williams fended off a rearing delivery form Thommo which hit the bat splice
and went over the ropes for 6. Bacchus n Co. fraid-fraid after that. It was Larry Gomes who stood up. Thommo did soften men up for other bowlers.

Marshall and Garner 90 mins. non-stop at NZ. That Coney's arm was broken I need say no more.

Bishop and Walsh-Playing WI back into the game on a Sat. afternoon vs. India. Vengsarkar and Co. were closer to ump than stump. India was about 4 down facing about 10 overs.

culpepperboy 2022-04-16 02:23:42

I saw Waqar Younis bowl a spell at Kensington in the 90s. I think Symmonds was one of the openers.
Waquar's opening spell was unplayable.

Also Shoaib in a world cup game in England against the West Indies.
Sherwin Campbell was batting. One of the deliveries was so quick it hit Campbell's bat before he could get through the shot. The ball hit the bat and went for 6. cool

imusic 2022-04-16 05:57:37

I remember seeing Andy Eoberts set up Craig Sargeant from Ausrslia at QPO

Bowl bouncer……Sargeant hook for 4. Great shot

Next ball…..short again…..Sargeant looking to repeat. Blood everywhere. Sickening sight…..Andy no emotion.

CITYBOY 2022-04-16 10:16:03

Seen??PHYSICALLY THERE...
Or at the receiving end ..
Any fast bowler running in to me was viewed as lethal ..
All you think it easy

What I saw LIVE was in 1983 at Albion Leslaine Lambert running through Trinidad batsmen, taking a 8fer. May have been Simmons debut FC season!

The fastest bowler I faced as a teenager without a helmet was Ray Winter from Jamaica bowling around the wicket. Scary as hell!

I saw Barath score a century in his first test against Johnson and company,Gayle was the other opener and they were playing as cool as ever.

Da-Vincy 2022-04-16 22:40:39

Shane Bond to Lara, circa 2004
Mark Wood vs WI in St. Lucia, 2019
Neil Wagner vs WI, 2017-18

Mitchell Johnson in the Ashes some years ago

But most lethal spell (which I don’t equate to fastest) was Ambrose, when England got bowled out for 46 at QPO

think the spell vs. Leewards was more lethal. Richie Rich's bat was halfway down when he was yorked.
only saw the 2nd innings when Walsh caught Viv off him though.

Patrick Patterson against India in Delhi....5 wickets in the 1st inning for 34 runs and retire hurting Mangrekar in the second innings....it was brutal, sheer raw pace...also took 3 wickets in the second inning...

Brerzerk 2022-04-17 06:23:53

In reply to Onionman0I heard that Viv said he'd never seen Patto bowl better and Logie said that was one of Viv's best batting display also

WICFan 2022-04-17 08:50:02

Johnson during the 2013 Ashes and the South Africa tour after it, he was lethal.

Was too young to see Ambrose's 46 all out demolition and his 7-1. Johnson versus SA in 2014 and Taylor versus England in 2009. Taylor's spell was magnificent. English batsmen are petrified of coming forward but those deliveries were unplayable anyway. They would have blown away any lineup then, before or now

Onionman0 2022-04-18 17:17:55

In reply to Brerzerk

Yes...Viv scored run a ball hundred not out in the 4th inning ...chasing a target of above 270 runs...Viv was totally in control...ably supported by Logie... Patrick was simply brutal raw pace...., unfortunately, Patrick could play for West Indies for longer period....reason non cricket...

XDFIX 2022-04-18 19:55:30

No one can tell me a 4 prong pace like fire is not the best to have in your armory!

Harmison 7/12 at Sabina Park?

Jumpstart 2022-04-18 23:05:00

took advantage of a rubbish lineup......lara was injured with a damaged finger and wasn't even dismissed by harmison, hoggard dismissed him

spider 2022-04-18 23:21:26

Line up had Lara, Chanderpaul, gayle, Sarwan, Jacobs, and Devon Smith who scored a hundred in the first innings. It wasn't rubbish

Harmison 7/12 at Sabina Park

Good call

Not a welcome memory for West Indian fans….but if Ambrose’s 7-1 is valid…..and in retrospect…it very much is…..then Harmy’s performance at Sabina is also valid on this topic.

Ambrose had an angry spell at the Queens Park Oval in the mid 90s. Cant remember if it was against England or Australia. It was Test cricket. An opposing player said something to him lol

one man averaging over fifty and was nursing a finger injury(tiger was averaging just under 50 then) and two men averaging just over 40 when all their counterparts all over the world were averaging close to or above 50.......and well devon(even though he scored a century in the first innings), the less said the better for him.....it was a rubbish lineup

spider 2022-04-19 13:36:03

In reply to Jumpstart

Ok. But I disagree. They were good good players. And I don't know that all their counterparts all over the world were averaging 50 or close to it. My point about Smith is that he was in form and showed signs during the first innings that he could develop into a good player. Ryan Hinds made runs in the first innings as well.
