Royal Caribbean adds another day for cruise ship recruitment
An overwhelming response by T&T nationals to calls for jobs with Royal Caribbean has led the cruise line company to add another day of registration at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port-of-Spain.The company said it will return to NAPA on Friday to accommodate those who did not get through yesterday.Thousands of people lined up from early yesterday to late into the evening, hoping to get into NAPA to register.
In the end, the demand was so high that the process, a joint project between Royal Caribbean and the Ministry of Tourism, was just too much.
There are people in their thousands here. That speaks to the need for jobs and this is what we are trying to do here at Royal Caribbean Group to assist with job creation. For me, its heartbreaking to see so many people stand out here. We are trying our best, Wendy McDonald, Royal Caribbeans Regional Vice President of Government Relations for the Caribbean, said.
We were supposed to be Tuesday through Thursday (in San Fernando on Wednesday and Tobago on Thursday) but weve decided that we are going to be here, at NAPA again, on Friday. What we want to do right now is set up an appointment system for people we dont see today. We will see those people on Friday.
McDonald said while Royal Caribbean made the commitment with the T&T Government to hire 2,000 people, she never imagined that so many people would turn up yesterday.
The process was supposed to start at 9 am, as advertised, but people lined up from as early as 7 am.
But the orderly lines that were in place initially soon dissipated, leaving chaos.

Seeing the crowd that came out over the past two days should trouble us all. Some people didn't know there were so much unemployed people in this country. Now you see why crime and games of chance are so very rampant. The government immediately need to do something to address this lack of job situation before it gets worse. For the most part, gambling doesn't build house, it doesn't pay off mortgages, nor does it put food on your table.

People have not realized this but our Democracy has been highjacked and right in front of us. I am afraid that Trinidadians are headed for a recession the likes of which we have not seen before. Food will become less and less afordable and this govt is not taking action swiftly enough. Eveyting we buy has already gone up and may double in price in less than a year. What is Rowley waiting on, insurrection? Is that why he had his personal car bullet proofed? Rowley you cannt lead. You have proven that since 2016. This Country is dying right in front our faces just look at the current unemployment level. Citizens are being kept in the dark by Imbert on the true state of this country's Finances. When you cannot get US Dollars in banks we become prisoners in our own land and that has been the case now for years. Yet the Prime Minister and his Finance Minister have nothing to say on this subject. This line of thousands of citizens without jobs tells the story of of this country. Rowley you cannot manage this Country. Step down. This is Imbert's great management of our economy, thousands of unemployed and any job better than no jobs in Trinidad. Well done Imbert. Well done. Rowley says Imbert is managing the economy very well. Well, we can see that.

Seizing an opportunity or embarrassing the nation?
It is so sad, if not deeply shameful, to see the hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens who are standing in a mile-long line for jobs offered by the Royal Caribbean cruise line. This should not be new since many citizens were employed on Disney cruise liners. If anything, it is but the most poignant reflection of how desperate citizens have become, following the Government-imposed hardships of the pandemic.Too many are falling victim to crime, too many are falling victim to hunger, hardship, hopelessness, the high cost of living and everywhere you turn its only despair and joblessness. We have a joblessness pandemic as well, in addition to everything else"
Is it that they all got time off to pursue the service industry jobs with the cruise liner? Or are these among the thousands who lost their jobs in recent years, which have not been replaced, despite the humiliating relief package of rotting vegetables and small money bandied about? But I digress: the stampede of people will be broadcast throughout the region, particularly in Guyana and Barbados where, no matter our pretence, the rush is to get in and not out, and will embarrass the nation, because people are so desperate.
It is clear many citizens have seized upon an opportunity to depart these shores since work on these cruise liners is no vacation, but will yield a few US dollars which will be paid into US dollar accounts abroad. Its not a sacrifice too great. Its a free pass out of Trinidad and Tobago: a lifeline to escape the crime, the abuse of women and children, the high food prices, the bad roads, the terror and sewer-style governance and politics that saturate the nation. We quarrel about migrants and Caricom nationals coming for our jobs for less money, almost starvation wages, but here we are jamming for the same menial jobs in foreign lands. We are truly Venezuelas next step.

Applicants for cruise-ship jobs sleep outside NAPA
Hundreds of people slept in front of the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port of Spain, on Thursday night to try to deliver their documents early for one of the jobs available on Royal Caribbean Group International cruise ships.About 2,000 people are expected to be eligible for about 500 jobs in various categories such as food and beverage management, culinary arts, guest service and relations, hotel management and entertainment.
Large numbers of police, umbrellas to protect from the sun and rain and chairs to withstand the long wait were noticeable on Friday, the last day for applications.
Casey Clement told Newsday her two sisters arrived at 7 pm on Thursday to try to be among the first to get in when NAPA's doors opened. They came from central Trinidad.
My sisters slept across from NAPA. It really is a very good opportunity that Royal Caribbean is giving to the people of TT, said Clement.

Was that reactive police presence?
Or would Royal Caribbean have PAID in advance for it?
The more we think people give, the more they actually take

The Ministry of Tourism invited Royal to T&T. Told Royal that Trini's are the best at such jobs.
The citizens are paying for such protection.
Big money of selected applicants ..$50 US per day plus tips.
Such funds are put in Foreign bank accounts.
Some time ago, the Minister of Finance was saying how "he could see clearly now" and the economy had turned around, only to be told a few weeks later that "things were tight." This may account for the number of advertisements seen on television and in the newspapers from optical companies.

Cruises do not pay big money and you are forced to work 16 - 20 hours per day, I have a cousin who wasted over 30 years working on various cruise ships.
Jamaica is currently looking for skilled workers, you might fare much better than working on cruise ships. Most workers use it to obtain a sea visa, to find a North American girl then move on with their lives.
