T&T Julie mango or starch
The mighty mango gives us one season each year, two if we are lucky. The types are many, starch, Julie, cutlass, donkey stone, long, rose, doux-doux, calabash, apple mango, turpentine, La Brea gyal, paw paw and sugar gyal mango, to name a few.
The national mango board reports over 70 varieties in TT. The conversations got more animated when callers gave their opinions on which is perfect for the best chow and the recipes that produce such. The responses were too many and too varied to mention here!We need no excuse to devour a ripe mango on sight, we have perfected the art of biting into a ripe mango, tearing off the skin and sinking our teeth into the ripe flesh, sucking on the juice with little or none running down our arm. We enjoy mango in red mango, anchar, kutchela and curry. We make juice, ice cream and sorbet.
My favourite mango is Julie with starch coming in a close second. Have you ever noticed eating a starch mango there is more juice than flesh, not to mention the strings that hang out of our teeth after! Julies cut like cheese, and are fabulous in recipes, they bake up great, are perfect for ice-creams and sorbets, jams and salads and can be used at any stage of ripeness, and no strings!

We use those 70 varieties to stone dogs in my part of Jamaica. We have a mango known as common mango in Ja that even dogs don't like to be stoned with.
Even in Bim many of those 70 exist. I just came back from distributing 15 Julies to 3 neighbours in Bim.
In Ja we sell East Indian to tourists and visitors who like the size and the pretty colour. We eat Bombay, Keith, (Blackie for oldtimers) and those who are lucky get Governor.

Can't remember Coley. It may not be common in Eastern Ja. More likely I know the mango but not the name. I am in Ja very often but I have not lived there in decades so I am not up to speed.
Starch is sweet, about the same size as a Black Mango. Sometimes a Black Mango on the western side of the tree gets a lot of sun and has a pretty yellowish green colour and not the typical green. It may even have a sweeter taste.
That would be similar in size and taste but not smell to the Starch mango. The Blackie has a characteristic smell. Starch is common in Trinidad and even more common in Grenada.
Governor is massive with a thick skin. Like Bombay the flesh has no strings. It's not common.

Coley is like a mini Bombay, bigger than Blackie; man the taste is a cross between dah yellowish skin Blackie you mentioned and a Bombay woooieee.

The best mango on di planet is Bombay followed by East Indian. Have a Julie tree that bears all year round, but May/June and December there are way more mangoes than we can eat. I give away most of them. Had a delish Bombay this afternoon.

I would rate Bombay at 90%. Keith at 95%. The very rare Governor at 100%.
My granny got a Governor plant from Min of Agric at Hope Gardens in the 60's. It was planted on a slope above the main road. It was a small tree and would bear about 30 very big mangoes. Neighbours would pass and beg her to reserve one for dem. I believe it is still growing there.

I used to think that we in the Caribbean are very knowledgable about mangoes. In Florida there are more than 300 different species of mangoes. We have 2 Julie mango trees in our yard and we are down to our last 20 or so.The season started early this year in mid May probably due to the frost in January/February.One of our trees had well over 100 mangoes this season which was a little more than usual and we have been eating 2 or 3 mangoes every day since I got back from New York late last month.
I had 2 Bombay mango trees in my yard in Guyana but I prefer Julie mangoes.

the new varieties in Florida are some of the best in the world.
they include, orange essence, sweet tart, peach cobbler, sugar loaf, fruit punch, valcarrie, lemon zest, and coconut cream (one of the only patented mango varieties).
most of these are from the ZIll breeding program

The problem is the tree is planted close to the fence and last year for the first tiime after about 10 years a vagrant came and stole half the pears, so i've decided to plant a tree away from the fence. Bim is not what it used to be.
So sudden came and stole your mangoes...tsk tsk.

Sweetest mango on earth by a country mile comes from Columbia ... a teeny small but expensive .. hybrid full of sugary taste ..one will set you back a pretty penny and it is so small its not even a mouthful ..
The USA have lifted restrictions so you may get it there..
Most fruits are hybrid.. lab produced ... but damn altering has plenty of potential

I tried julie mango and bombay mango and all other mangoes they all left a sour taste in your mouth and they are high in acid.
Spice mango always left a sweet taste in your mouth.
This explain why spice mango is 6.99 cents a pound in canada while julie mange is 3.99 cents and sometime 4.99 cents a pound.
All the west indians store have spice mango at a higher price.
Even oceans chinese store have spice mango at a higher price then the other mangos.
conclusion is spice mango is the sweetest and the best.

I was first made aware of those Fl. mango in a response to a Dukes post.
Headley is the Kieth you speak of the same KEITT here in 'Murca? I first
tasted one grown in Texas, huge green skin, very sweet and flavorful...a hint of Bombay.
Yes Chrissy, most Julie trees in Kingston were distributed from Hope Gardens in the 60's
most bear year-round. Always blossoms, young ones and getting ready or ready ones. Crop time,
Easter, Summer n Christmas.

they are harvested too early not properly transported and ripened.
Not enough time for the protopectin to be converted to pectin.
Used to export both those for a spell.

it appears as though you know about mangoes and the propagation of mangoes.
it is one of my passions.
i have about 20-30 varieties with more to come. and i have grafted a lot of them too
and yes it was probably a Keitt, pronounced KIT, that that big headed bloke was on about. Keitt, of course, is an old Florida variety.

That's the problem Jamaicans in Florida have identified.
I have more than 12 relatives in Broward County who have mango trees in their yards because they want to pick the mangoes when they are ready. As you know, Caribbean people are accustomed to sun ripened mangoes picked from a tree when ready to eat.
