Alberta ski resort open for Canada Day thanks to significant snowpack

Thursday, June 30th 2022, 4:31 pm - Slightly cooler conditions will help keep mountain peaks covered with snow throughout the long weekend.

Even though we’re well into the summer season, skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes in Banff Sunshine Village through much of the Canada Day long weekend due to the winter’s long-lasting snowpack.“It has been a long, harsh winter for many Canadians, driven by a La Niña pattern that has brought unusually high levels of snow and below seasonal temperatures to parts of the country,” explained Jessie Uppal, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

“Thanks to a healthy snowpack and a delayed start to the warmth normally seen in spring and summer, many areas at the higher elevations, particularly the Alberta Rockies, have been able to take advantage of the extended ski season.”

The resort received over 900 cm of snow during the past ski and snowboard season and plans to stay open until July 3, depending on the weather and high elevation conditions.

This Alberta ski resort has not opened this late in the season since 1991, according to CBC News.
