Memory Lane: When the 2 sevens clash

Back in ‘77 a lot of us were waiting on the Black Star Line to take us back to Africa on this day.

A lot of us were looking forward to 7/7/77 with a mix of eager anticipation and trepidation much the same way that 12/31/1999 was looked at…signaling the advent of the frightening Y2K when the world as we knew it was going to end.

Today, 45 years later, the 2 sevens deliver us Boris Johnson’s resignation lol lol

Singer Joseph Hill said "Two Sevens Clash," Culture's most influential record, was based on a prediction by Marcus Garvey, who said there would be chaos on 7 July 1977, when the "sevens" met. With its apocalyptic message, the song created a stir in his Caribbean homeland and many Jamaican businesses and schools closed for the day.[5][6]

The liner notes of the album read: "One day Joseph Hill had a vision, while riding a bus, of 1977 as a year of judgment - when two sevens clash - when past injustices would be avenged. Lyrics and melodies came into his head as he rode and thus was born the song "Two Sevens Clash" which became a massive hit in reggae circles both in Jamaica and abroad. The prophecies noted by the lyrics so profoundly captured the imagination of the people that on July 7, 1977 - the day when sevens fully clashed (seventh day, seventh month, seventy-seventh year) a hush descended on Kingston; many people did not go outdoors, shops closed, an air of foreboding and expectation filled the city."

lol

My neighbours birthday was July 7, and in 1977, he couldn't have a party, because nobody would come!

Sorry to hear about your dad…

I would have loved to have been in a bar on 7/7/77 but I don't think I was brave enough to venture out of my yard… lol

Time does fly…

What made the 2 sevens predictions even more plausible was that the December of 76 we had one of the coldest temperatures ever experienced by Yard..a cold front passed through that made temperatures especially in Mandeville drop to unprecedented levels prompting people to wonder if the end was nigh lol so we were already on high alert when Culture dropped that tune… lol

It’s funny but I have more vivid memories of events that happening from the 60s-80s - compared to events that occurred in the decades subsequently. Everything from the 90s onwards is a blur…
