In reply to nitro
Kanhai
John Trim should have had a better run and I think Robert Christiani could compete with Pydanna.

I completely forgot Uncle Basil. My problem is how does one drop Kallicharran whose batting average was almost 50 before his batting went south.
This is too hard. I give up.

In reply to Dukes
is this the same Murray that dropped Sobie, or it was Jackman.
In reply to WestDem
I wanted Hooper, more than any other batsman, to succeed. The first time I saw him bat, I think it was the English spinner Emburey who was bowling. The English commies were arguing that Richards, who was his partner, should protect him. Hooper proceeded to clobber him.
Alas I ended up cussing him more than praising him. Hooper could have been great. The guy never looked bothered by any bowler yet found a way to get out.
In reply to tc1
That was Sydney Jackman. Lance made sure he never played for Guyana again after that tour. LOL
pretty solid XI from Guyana but perhaps a little weak in the bowling department compared to a JA or Bim or even Leewards all time XI but full of really good batsmen esp in the middle order
In reply to VoopsandOut
Nitro was the only poster I took seriously, the others was just a group of names.
Who are the two best openers?
The batting positions
Allrounder
Wicketkeeper

Since the topic is Guyana's Test Eleven
I will venture to say the most difficult thing is the other opening slot. Guyana had has one outstanding opener Freddo but
Camacho also did duties. It is inevitable that the other spot will have to occupied by one of the many talented
specialist middle order batsman.
My choice is Carl Hooper. He is too good player, despite his career average, not be in the eleven .Plus he can bowl bit and a helluva catcher at slips too.
Some good player such as Butcher could miss out. So too Sarwan as the number four spot for me is either Sarwan or Kallicharran. My preference is Kalli.
Another vexed position is wickekeeper.Pydanna does not fit the bill as I can't recall him playing a Test.So too Red Murrqay. Robert Christiani only did
minimal service as a back up.
So it comes down to the highly thought of Cyril Christiani of the 1930s,CLifford McWatt who played at least 5 Tests or Ivor Mendonca who played only two but a superior batsman.
I go for the last named who could also be pressed to open in a pinch as he did at domestic level.
As for bowlers,Guyana has produced three quality pacer,Croft,King and John Trim. All three make it for me with Toothpick who does
not need any help as the lone specialist spinner.
Fredericks
Hooper
Kanhai
Kallicharran
Chanderpaul
Lloyd(captain)
Mendonca
Trim
King
Croft
Gibbs
Sarwan as 12th.
I think the attack is good the batting quality should give them more than enough to defend against the best.
Throw no stones now
In reply to doosra
There is no Berbice side without John Trim
In reply to Dukes
Dukes Shiv cannot make that 11. Butcher Solomon Hooper ahead of him any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Give me a break
In reply to Chrissy
Correct is right
That was my top 6 batters
No Beaton?
In reply to CricSham
What grade are you on sham
[b]In reply to doosra[/b
Sorry never finish high school
In reply to hubert
Good XI you have there Hubert. Well balanced considering the lack of a 2nd quality opener. Hooper's test average as an opener is actually almost the same as his overall batting average, even though he only opened 6 times.
In reply to Dukes
You dont have to drop Kalli Drop Chandrapaul he does not deserve a place in that lineup. Kanhai at 3 Kalli at 4 Lloyd at 5 and the allrounder (Hooper) at 6.
In reply to CricSham
i will repeat, what grade of bad weed are you on
In reply to CricSham
You are appropriately named if you think Shiv Tiger Chanderpaul should not be in an all Guyana side.
In reply to Curtis
You have a right to your choice as I, mine. But pray tell who will he replace in that middle order of Kanhai, Kalli, Lloyd?
In reply to CricSham
Every year we go through this exercise of picking the best all time Guyana IX...and I have been on this board for close to 20 years....so its basically from the same pool of players we pick...and these players are the ole time greats...players before the 80s
It's so sad only Hooper, Shiv and Sarwan who could potentially be included from Guyanese players of the last 40 years.
In reply to CricSham
Dukes Shiv cannot make that 11. Butcher Solomon Hooper ahead of him any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Give me a break
You are dead wrong here.
And this does not merit further discussion.
In reply to CricSham
Shiv would bat 6.
In reply to Narper
Dont be so dismissive, CricSham is one of IdiAdmins pals!
In reply to Curtis
# 6 is the allrounder 7 the keeper and 4 bowlers. Its unfortunate there is no place for him the same for Butcher Solomon Sarwan.
In reply to Narper
Narper there are three spots in the middle order taken by Rohan Alvin Clive. The only way Shiv can make that team he has to replace one of them. Take your pick.
In reply to CricSham
You ever play cricket?
In reply to nitro
what about Basil Butcher he all class
In reply to CricSham
Answer Westdem...
No team mythical or not Guyanese or West Indies can leave out Shiv .. for your benefit .. cricket involves 2 teams and the teams have to make runs( please google so you can understand a bit more)
And whilst on google search Shiv runs .. plain and simple .. SHIV is a run machine and with an average of over 50 his name goes first ..
Unless you think 50 is lower than 40
In reply to Narper
20 years Narps? you been on this mb a long time. Aren't you tired of trying to pick an all time Guyana XI by now?
In reply to Arlo
Real tired...but it is fun and I have had fun...and I don't want to spoil the fun others are having..
I have not attempted to pick a team this time around
In reply to StumpCam
I know Cricsham here
Maybe this is the first time I have disagreed with him
There is no hard feelings here
Cricsham is my boy ....he writes great cricket articles

In reply to CricSham
What is the basis of your pronouncement here....certainly not stats....value to team and longevity.
Making the final XI ....could be a toss up with Kalli....and even tho I liked Kalli a lot....Shiv will trump over Kalli....based on stats. longevity and value to team
In reply to Narper
Cricshame is a failed journalist. He never played any cricket to understand a test player contribution
I guess Shiv diss him in NY
In reply to Narper
This is my first go round picking a Guyana team on here. I have had these discussions in the past though. I cannot settle on a final XI for obvious reasons.
So my XI so far
1. Roy Fredericks
2. Carl Hooper
3. Rohan Kanhai
4. Alvin Kallicharan
5. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
6. Clive Lloyd (c)
7. Clifford McWatt (wk)
8. John Trim
9. Colin Croft
10. Reon King
11. Lance Gibbs
My top 6 is set. Also Croft and Gibbs. It is just 3 spots that I find hard to fill.
The wicket keeping spot. I decided to go with McWatt. I took his batting record into consideration
For the other 2 bowling spots one of King and Trim have to be there. I considered Harper for the 4th bowling spot but then decided to go with both Trim and King as Gibbs and Hooper are already there to bowl off spin.
Hooper makes my team ahead of Basil Butcher as Hooper will be the 5th bowler and his test average as opener is close to his overall test average. So Hooper will be the other opener.
In reply to Narper
I understand you want to tap him on the back but you are tapping too hard man ....

In reply to Arlo
My best Guyana test team!
1. Roy Fredericks
2. Faoud Bacchus
3. Rohan Kanhai (wk)
4. Alvin Kallicharan
5. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
6. Clive Lloyd (c)
7. Carl Hooper
8. Neil McGarell
9. Colin Croft
10. Reon King
11. Lance Gibbs
Now me guh get beat from that QC scholar
In reply to Narper
Narps your knowledge of the game is too well to talk about statistics in evaluating the true value of a player. Just to give you an example shiv is the losingest batsman in test cricket but It would be wrong to hold that in evaluating him. If we go by stats in a world 11 Kallis will always be picked ahead of Gary Sobers.
Kalli and Shiv is not even a discussion. Kalli is heads and shoulders above him looking at game situations and the opposition. But that is just my opinion I could be right or I could be wrong.
In reply to WestDem
Kanhai was before my time, so I never saw him keep. Is he such a good keeper to make an all time Guyana XI as the keeper?
In reply to WestDem
Thats a boss team!
In reply to Dukes
Put some respect on Carl Llewelyn Hooper's name!
Question for Guyanese: Was Reon King better than Leslaine Lambert, Lyndon Joseph and Ray Joseph? I know King played tests and the others didnt, but
In reply to mikelegend
Leslaine was the best of all those
In reply to WestDem
Saw him bowl
just came at the wrong time. Saw Linden Joseph bowling Lara at QPO as well, he was quick!
In reply to mikelegend
Played against both and Leslaine was the toughest to me!
In reply to WestDem
In reply to WestDem
Awesome experience. There were some seriously good bowlers in the region around that time that didnt make it to the highest level.
In reply to WestDem
you skunt lose all credibility when you pick my fren Faoud in the best Guyana team! Doan even mention your McGarell pick!!
In reply to WestDem
I saw Leslaine wrecked the Tits at Albion in 1983. Pace and bounce, think he took like 8 for little. Might have been Simmons debut match or season.
Ok, let's name our all-time Case Cup team, that might be easier.
Some names to consider like:
Neblett
Ramnarace
Glasgow's
Sewnaraine
Etwaroo
Mcrae
Waithe
Etc.
In reply to Curtis
Thats a 70s team!
Do they still play Case Cup, if not when did it end???
In reply to StumpCam
Nowadays is more like Case of beers
