India has entered into tax treaties with many countries for avoiding double taxation in both countries and as per section 90 of the Act, the provisions of the treaty would prevail in cases wherever the same is more favorable to the taxpayer
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deducts the tax at source but cricketers still need to file their returns like all other citizens under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, requiring citizens to reveal all taxable sources of income.
Individual athletes who play sport and win prize money in the UK have to pay tax in the UK on those winnings. The tournaments withhold 20% of overseas players gross winnings and pay that over to HMRC.
The athlete is then (above a certain income level) obliged to complete a UK tax return to determine the tax due on the profit from their UK activity during each tax year. This allows the athlete to claim their tournament expenses, such as travel and accommodation costs, which could mean that they recoup some of the tax withheld; or they may have some more tax to pay if the level of profit means that the 40% or 45% tax rates are applicable.
In Australia, a withholding is held on the amount of the contract and winnings
South Africa taxes non-residents on a source basis meaning that receipts from sources within the borders of the country are subject to tax. Applying the source basis, earnings received by foreign sportspersons from activities they perform in SA are thus subject to tax.
Taxes are paid in India, USA, Australia, SÁ, and England on earnings in these countries by all foreign Players.
According to the Income Tax Act of India, 1961 income earned by any non-resident sportsman is taxable under section 115BBA at the rate of 20 percent
If you are a foreign athlete and/or entertainer performing independent personal services in the United States, you must generally pay U.S. income tax on your U.S. source income.
Now if they bring such funds to the Caribbean, the interest earned will be taxable.
What ails West Indies cricket? This is one of the most frequently asked questions in recent years in cricketing circles. And unlike what has been suggested so far, the real answer probably lies in one word money.
The APL, which was on at the same time as the India West Indies Test series, involved Gayle playing a maximum of 10 T20 contests and earning $1,00,000 to $1,500,000 in the process. Had he played the two-Test series in India, he would have earned a meagre $10,000. For 15 times more money, Gayle, like anyone else in his position, had chosen the APL over the India series. While the official reason given was that Gayle wanted the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to try out new faces, such an explanation ..
On the other hand, if the ICC governing body suggests to a player, through the home board, that he would be paid half the money he would lose as a result of playing for the national team, there is reason to conjecture that players of the caliber of Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and others would opt to play Test and ODI cricket over T20 leagues.
To expect players to say no to 15 times more money for a third of the effort is to expect that players are saints. None or at least most are no ..
In Guyana they pay no taxes.. all earnings are tax free. Goes for all athletes not just cricketers.
Same for CARICOM and all those big ones working on dem foreign funded projects/grants etc.
If you paid tax on the foreign income to a foreign country, a certain amount is protected from double taxation. This is known as the Foreign Income Tax Credit. This ensures that you you only get taxed one time instead of twice.

Yes, 10% of their earnings go to CWI! A tax by any name is still a tax!
In reply to sgtdjones
What is the rationale for WI cricketers not paying income tax?
Is it fair to the rest of working people?
In reply to XDFIX
Isn't that only when they play in the foreign leagues?
And isn't CWI a private entity...accountable to no government?
It's a scam, tax dodgers
Taxes on athletes earnings is quite straight forward .. this is nothing new..
However you have to be careful of double taxation .. treaties take care of that.. and also athletes incorporate and use off shore countries as their home base..resulting in their country getting zilch..
And that my friend is the reason I wont but a beer for an athlete.
It also depends how savvy is their agent.
They love a free ride..I had plenty agents who rep baseball hockey and basketball players calling me for vehicles ..

It's an archaic agreement when West Indies started playing cricket and hasn't changed over the decades.
In those days we had few players with foreign contracts, and legislators didn't look ahead, noting various leagues that
today pay multi-million dollars in salaries.
Kanhai, Sobers etc when playing in Australia made approx. 3 to 5000 Australian dollars per year.
In England less than the above. ie West Indies had few players playing in such leagues.
The authorities of the West Indies decided to give such players Tax-free status but taxed the interest accumulated if such funds were
put in local banks. Most of such monies were squandered by players.

Are IPL earnings (as one example) taxed by the India as part of cricketers income?
And how might taxes for non-Indian players on IPL income work?
I remember a few years back - WC? where the Australian tax people took taxes from intl players?
here is an interesting 2023 thing
In reply to Narper
what happens in Canada Narps?
I suppose tax is a standard thing
In reply to sgtdjones
Fraud STFU. You dont know what you are talking about. Taxes on income did not exist when WI started playing cricket. The WI were colonies, asswipe, and no income taxes were in existence in the WI at the time, at least not in Bim.

T&T..The Act 34 introduced tax laws of T&T 1938
Prior to 1942. The Treasury Division administered the Income Tax functions.
1942..Inland Revenue Department was created, as a separate and autonomous department of Government, to administer the Income Tax functions. A Commissioner and a Deputy Commissioner managed the department.
1956 Trinidad was granted internal self-government. The department was then made a division of the Ministry of Finance and renamed Inland Revenue Division. Officers were relocated from Richmond Street to 41 and 47-49 Sackville Street, Port of Spain. (P.O.S).
1957... The mechanisation of tax processing commenced with the introduction of the Hollerith system. This system required the use of punch cards, which were then processed through a reproducer to obtain necessary printouts.
1963..Moved from Sackville Street offices to Trinidad House, St. Vincent Street, P.O.S.
1966..Major changes introduced by Act no. 29 of 1966:
Establishment of a Board consisting of three (3) Commissioners;
Introduction of Corporation Tax as a separate Tax regime;
Introduction of Withholding Tax regime.
It has been amended in various years since .....
STFU , ya fat obese pompous skunt, you claim Cricket players pay no taxes...
You have no idea what I am talking about ...so fck off...
Do allegations say you are an affirmative action lawyer?

Is it fair to the rest of working people?
Many legislation in the Income Tax act is not fair.....unless one is wealthy. So many loopholes
I can name a dozen plus...
The West Indies players are usually the only cricketers that do not have to pay taxes because the WICB is registered in the Cayman Islands which has leniency on taxes.
Some players claimed they were unaware of the development. But a source told the Express that they were notified of this via the West Indies Players Association (WIPA).
It is understood that on the morning of their match against South Africa last week, members of the entire squad received their pay slip in Sydney with the news that 32.5% of their earnings made from the cricket World Cup would be deducted in taxes to the Australian government.
Normally the West Indies cricketers are exempted from paying taxes but under Australian laws, they wont get away with it and have to pay for the duration of the ICC World Cup.But what has been startling is that the taxes are also touching monies earned from their retainer contracts with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for the period that they are involved in this tournament.
the reason why WI cricketers do not pay taxes on income and get duty free concessions / exemptions has nothing at all to do with the CWI being registered in Caymans.
name one WI cricketer you know paid income notwithstanding the nonsense you copied and pasted about the British Inland Revenue Department in Titland
Would a player be required to pay taxes after he has retired from international cricket....like Pollard?
What about coach Ice Cream man....does he pay taxes?
In reply to Narper
no and that makes no sense
In reply to doosra
I suppose tax is a standard thing
Doos...we pay taxes on every damn thing....we pay taxes on taxes

In Canada...there is nothing free...tax payers pay for every thing...even ole age pension is taxed...and I am not joking.
This idiot is clueless...I see why he is a failure in everything he does...
Politics ...30 /0
Marriages ....well to many to count. etc ... No lawfirm wanted to hire you huh?
A fcking dumbarse lawyer ...I see why you worked for an Insurance company in Calgary...
Players pay income tax should they bring such funds to T&T and it earns interest. They pay taxes on the interest.
I noted this before but it might be too much for you to comprehend.
In reply to Narper
I understand Ice-cream man lives in England.
Ice-cream man makes more than the above ...

He is required to fill out tax forms in England, he will prevent double taxation if England has a Tax agreement with any Country that he works for.
Each country has its own tax laws for foreign players playing cricket within its boundaries.
I posted earlier on the various percentages.
