RIP Mikhail Gorbachev

NineMiles 2022-08-30 21:42:46

aged 91.

Gorbachev changed the world by helping end the Cold War but unable to prevent his country from collapsing!

Not loved by the Russians but loved the World over.

RIP Great Man!

A brilliant realist. One had to have witnessed the Soviet union when he came to power to understand the magnitude of the risk he took to change the ugly face of Socialism. Nuff respect comrade rest in peace.

Yep, a good man is never honoured in his own country - Robert Nesta Marley.

It also seems he wasn't/isn't much loved on this board either with the usual crew avoiding this thread like the plague.

People forget that a potential nuclear war was averted because of this great man!

Absolutely. Some people have very short memories!

I was studying in St. Petersburg when he came to power. This man is in the mold of Abraham Lincoln for the Russian people. In fact, for the entire soviet bloc. In the same vein that Lincoln stood by his convictions against slavery even at the expense of possibly losing his presidency Gorbachev did the same when he said politically or economically, the Soviet system cannot continue. That speech in 85 sent shock waves throughout the Soviet Union. They had never heard a politician speak like that ever in the Soviet Union.

Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain.

Vladimir Putin

The same Socialism that provided an ungrateful wretch like you a free education.

Anyways, R.I.P to Gorbi. He was an infinitely better leader than the senile failed Hollywood actor and the wicked Witch of Downing Street.

Mikhail Gorbachev Didn't Mince Words When It Came To His Opinion Of Donald Trump

Throughout its history, the USSR had many different leaders, some who were more impactful than others. Mikhail Gorbachev was both an impactful and a different type of Soviet leader. Gorbachev died on August 20, 2022 and was the last living leader of the former Soviet Union. As Reuters states, Gorbachev's political life was strife with both controversies and oddities. Gorbachev oversaw the fall of the Soviet Union, which was already significantly weakened by his domestic policymaking. Gorbachev brought an end to the Cold War, made numerous partnerships with the USSR's western opponents, including President Ronald Reagan, and helped push forth Germany's reunification

He tried to build a bridge to the West

The West didn't support him.

Think you'll find you were in Leningrad. What were you studying?

When he was trusted with his country's leadership, they were arguably #2 in the world.

When he relinquished power, his country was no longer a viable entity. It didn't take long to become non-existent.

That's a huge failure any which way you measure it.

Like Jamaica you can't build an iron throne on the emptiness of pride . . . The Soviet Union was already dead . . . However, they could have become the next Germany . . .

He offered his hand to the West. Let us join you .
I will give you East Germany if you don't expand NATO eastwards.
We will cut back our nuclear missiles, let us have a world of Peace.
He destroyed the Soviet Union for Peace
We rejected it and now we end up with Putin....

sad sad
