Today, Trinidad celebrates her 60th Independence.
Despite the many current challenges, notably a current crime rate that is uncomfortable, Trinidad remains one of the world's greatest success stories. Countries and leaders the world over have studied the Trinidad's success, some of which includes, inter alia:
1. One of the first third world nation from the global 1960's movement for autonomy, to attain first world development metrics
In 2002, the Paris Club invited Trinidad to forgive loans made to other nations- this is usually reserve for the world richest countries, and it was the very first time in history, a small country like Trinidad contributed to the reduction of third world debt.
2. The creation of the one of the world's greatest population melting pot.
3. The development of Pt Lisa Industrial Complex, when it was built, it was recognized as the greatest non military industrial complex in the world at that time.
4. Its road network- although recently some roads have been neglected, the network which cut across the entire island- this infrastructure is regarded as one of the best in the world by the international consortium of civil engineers.
5. Freedom of religion, free movement of people, free and fair elections, are hallmark only a few multi-ethnic, multi religious, multi cultural nations are able to build and sustain.
The challenges ahead includes:
1.Economic restructuring away from fossil fuel and creating an IT and global powerhouse on renewal energy- they are well on their way
2.The lack of a strong opposition party- this is fundamental to a proper democracy
3.Outside political and cultural interference INFLUENCING a few but powerful cohorts from the fragile opposition party, that seeks to rekindle old world destructive Eastern religious sentiments that have the potential to damage the great melting pot, an envy of the world.
4.Revamp of the outdated education system
5.Reform of the police force and government services
6.Global warming
