Monday September 12,1988 was a terrifying day in Jamaica. That was the day of Hurricane Gilbert a category 4 Hurricane that hit Jamaica. It was the first direct hurricane hit on Jamaica since Hurricane Charlie in 1951.
I did not lose my roof, only a few fruit trees in the yard. However my good friend who had a mansion in Cherry Gardens lost his roof.He told me what hurt him was the fact that his dog kennel was intact!!!!
None of us had ever experienced a hurricane so we knew very little about exactly what to do.My next door neighbor and a couple other people climbed up on the roof to secure the satellite dish after the storm had passed and all was calm but did not know that it comes back in the other direction shortly after.
WHAT A DAY!!!!!!!

Wild Gilbert

My father summed it up when I visited him early in '89, "Gilbert was not a boy.".
