Given the piss poor standards of commentary these days (particularly from former players) I've been thinking about my favourite commentators who were former players (male or female).
My top 5:
(1) Michael Holding
(2) Richie Benaud
(3) Ian Chappell
(4) David Gower
(5) Geoffrey Boycott
Top 5 worst would probably comprise of the entire CPL comms team with the exceptions of Mali Richards and Alex Jordan.

Top 5 players turn commentators
In reply to SnoopDog
Barry Richards was great to listen to on the occasions he was contracted.
Another colour commie I liked to hear was Bill Lawry.
In reply to Halliwell
Richards wasn't too bad. Lawry was good until the end when he got decidedly biased.
Tony Grieg was fantastic too.
In reply to SnoopDog
So how come no muddie made the list...?
In reply to sgtdjones
I don't think I know of any former player turn commentator from Guyana much less one that would make my all time top 5.
On the other hand, all of the former players turn commentators from Tittieland are easily in my top 5 worst list.
In reply to SnoopDog
You dont like ...tree Darren?
In reply to sgtdjones
I don't really mind the accent.
It's the fact that he and the rest of the Tits feel they have to scream into the fcuking mic every. single. time. they are commentating and calling the play. Why can't they just speak normally at a normal volume level like Mali Richards does for instance?
They remind of dem televangelists screaming at the TV for people to "put your hands against the screen".
Pommie was one of the best
In reply to imusic
Pommie IS one of the best.
He hasn't retired as far as I know.
Ian Botham was a whinger supreme especially if England was playing. There was always something to complain or gripe about.
In reply to SnoopDog
Colin Croft!
In reply to StumpCam
Ah yes Crofty.
I liked him better on radio though.

U don't like Swann
In reply to tops
Absolutely hilarious
In reply to mikelegend
Yep, esp Mikey 😁
In reply to SnoopDog
Sean Devers '83,000 square miles' used to play U19 cricket
In reply to SnoopDog
Mali Richards has potential but needs lots of training. His five favorite words are 'Bang Bang,' 'slightly' and 'Alzarri Joseph'
Alex Jordan has best voice among women needs to up her knowledge on players and the game
Old star Sunil Gavaskar is still pretty good.
Ramiz Raja when he was commentating
1. Mikey Holding
2. Mali Richards
The others, I just put them on mute.
If they are looking for a Stacey Ann, I heard a pretty competent Stacey Ann during the Under 19 tournament.
I believe she was from St Vincent.
In reply to SnoopDog
Pommie is very good, so was Shane Warne.
In reply to SnoopDog
Nasser Hussain or Bumble doesn't make the list?
In reply to WIfan26
Not my top 5 list. Nasser is okay. He gets into theatrics too much for my liking at times.
Bumble was good at colour commentary. Him and Tony Greig were a good pairing.
In reply to Titleist
Warnie was good when he commentated in non-Oz games. He was way too biased when he was on air for Oz games.
In reply to SnoopDog
Michael Atherton
My top five!
1: Benaud
2: Gower
3: Mandraikar
4: Atherton
5: Hussain
