We have done this many times over. List your top ten Male reggae vocalist (not song writers) I mean singers who upon hearing their voice you stop and say "who da &*$% singing like that". I should add I don't mean who was popular locally or even internationally (sorry Bob, Desmond, Ken, Alton and Jimmy) or who history say was good, simply who was wikkid:
1. Dennis Brown
2. Bunny "Rugs" Clarke - - Third World
3. Beres Hammond
4. David "Dread" Hinds - - Steel Pulse
5. Donald "Tabby Diamond" Shaw - - Mighty Diamonds
6. Derrick Lara - Tamlins
7. A. J. Brown & Maxi Priest
9. John Holt
10. Glen Ricks
10a.Junior Murvin/Danny Clarke - - Meditations

REGGAE VOCALISTS
In reply to JoeGrine
Can disagree with some and the order but not with Number 1. Great choices
In reply to JoeGrine
Sanchez
Garnet Silk
That is a good list. Not much to add ..and probably my own order, but that is based on personal taste.
Honorable Mentions:
- Kiddus I - Graduation in Zion remains one of my fave tracks ever.
- Tyrone Downie
I have to add...re the order, for me No.1 is David Hinds and No. 2 is Bunny Rugs tied with Dennis Brown.
Ohhh rats...yuh kyah leff out Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones.
This is harder than I thought.
In reply to JoeGrine
Wheres Lincoln Sugar Minott?
AGAIN the unmistakable distinctive voice of Joseph Hill
David Hinds had a 'struggle' voice to me.
He shouldn't really be near any top ten list, even though the group overall is amazing.
Errrmm, no Richie Stephens nor Maxi Priest (cousin of Jacob Miller)? Speaking of which, Killa Milla?
Aiiiighhht then!
In reply to JoeGrine
wont make it to 10, but Bunny Ruggs is #1, #2 and #3
Bunny Ruggs
Garnett Silk
Jacob Miller ......... Discipline child is otherworldly
Richie Stevens
Sanchez
Frankie Paul
Chris Martin
now this is pretty voice, not depth of music. hence no peter tosh etc
No Alton ....no Ken...no Bunny ...no Bob ...no Toots....no Luciano.....?
And there is a nowadays yute who sings like a bird named Mortimer. Jah Cure have a raass voice too.
Listen man ....with the possible exception of Nashville no where else on earth has more singers per capita than yard. Picking a top ten is a fools errand, it will have to be a top 25 at the least to raass.
Go listen again to the easy style of Boris Gardner, the man who sang I Want To Wake Up With You.
And try Desmond Dekker (Unity and Sweet Music). And Peter Tosh (Babylon Your Queendom is Falling).

Uncle Ewart
what are you saying boss?

Freddie McGregor especially his diction was very good. Probably the best in reggae music in his prime.
Highly subjective stuff...but its clear that reggae has a whole buncha talented voices.
I ammended my post a few times as I kept thinking about others. Luciano, Singing Melody, Freddie Mac, George Nooks, Maxi Priest is not my style...but in terms of voice..he is up there. Beres is also one of those unique raspy voices.

Thanks Fan, just shows...... everybody needs an editor.

"Dread" at #1 on your list gets absolutely no complaints from me.
In reply to JahJah
Thanks, added Maxi Priest to my list.
Don't forget:
Delroy Wilson
Pat Kelly
Ken Parker
Carl Dawkins
In reply to CWWeekes
Was gonna ask if the list could include Rocksteady artistes too.
If so Pat Kelly has to be there. But, no discussion on 'sweet' male reggae
voices is complete without the name JAMES CHAMBERS aka Jimmy Cliff!
Anyone remembers the late great Prilly Hamilton, should he get honorable mention?
'Drummie' Glen Washington sings better than Frankie Paul I think. Wha' 'bout Slim Smith
n Jimmy Riley?
In reply to CWWeekes
Pat Kelly almost made my list
In reply to Brerzerk
Prilly wasn't bad at all but "Rugs" eat him food.
In reply to JoeGrine
Bunny Rugs
Freddy McGregor
Horace Andy should count for something!
In reply to Ewart
No worries
Its uncanny how hard it is for us to see our own typos
.these days I read my draft emails 3 or 4 times and only find my typos after I hit the send button
In reply to Brerzerk
Go listen to a little-known Frankie P song titled "Inferiority Complex". Just shows how this thing is subjective; can't get enough of Mr. FP.
In reply to JoeGrine
Bunny Ruggs
Maxi Priest
Ali Campbell
Dennis Brown
Alton Ellis
Garnet Silk
Junior Reid
Freddy McGregor
Beres Hammond
Sanchez
In reply to JoeGrine
Yes!!!
In reply to Cheeks
I believe you meant Tyrone Taylor, not Tyrone Downie the Wailers' keyboard man. The late Tyrone Taylor had a great and soulful voice; remember "Cottage in Negril" and "Members Only"
In reply to nitro
I'm honored I was able to place 4 on your list.
Bunny Ruggs
Maxi Priest
Ali Campbell
Dennis Brown
Alton Ellis
Garnet Silk
Junior Reid
Freddy McGregor
Beres Hammond
Sanchez
Please consider Vic Taylor. And Tony Gregory who sang with Byron Lee.

Love Rocksteady song "Heartaches" by Mr, Taylor.

We have to give a shout out to Eric Donaldson
The title is Reggae Vocalists and when it comes to reggae, styles come in to play. I would think the best vocalists would mean a combination of sweet/great singing and range...for example Celine Dion can sing as good as Whitney Houston but she cant match Whitney in range and power.
We would need to ignore styles....a man like Gregory Issacs is pure style.
I dont know how under the title REGGAE you could ignore Jimmy Cliff to me one of the very first great reggae vocalist.
Jimmy Cliff
Maxi Priest
Dennis Brown
Bunny Rugs
Freddie McGregor
Sanchez
John Holt
....these to me are great reggae vocalist in respect of great singing and range. John Holt's ability to take so much covers and immortalised them like they were his own must be evidence of a great vocalist.
Wayne Wonder should be in the mix!
In reply to analyst-kid
You just described AJ Brown and "Tabby" Shaw and to a lesser extent Glen Ricks none of whom are on your list!
In reply to JoeGrine
Pinchers is one heck of a singer!! Sanchez is silky smooth and Garnet Silk had a very distinctive voice..if ever there was a singer that sang songs to perfectly suit his voice it was Garnet..
Cynthia Schloss!

Leroy Ballistic Affair Smart Speaks!
No respect for Cocoa Tea?
Stevie Wonder?
Add Luciano
In reply to Ewart
Great pick bro
Lukie D not a reggae singer? Or else she should be in any top 5.
In reply to Chrissy
He is highly overrated, he does some popular revival songs!
In reply to JoeGrine
Agreed. What I failed to mention was also international material. The title should be famous/renown/international reggae vocalists out of Jamaica.
In reply to Raggs
Ernie Smith has one of the best dictions!
In reply to camos
you aren't serious are you?
In reply to Da-Vincy
Lukie D is a man
