Just five years ago Barbados and West Indies allrounder Roston Chase was a highly regarded middle order batsman and an extremely handy off-spinner. He was a certainty on the West Indies side and early in his career was named Cricketer-of-the-Year and Test-Cricketer-of-the-Year by the West Indies Players’ Association.

Chase’s test debut for the regional team was in the 2016 home series against a strong India side. In the second game at Sabina Park in Jamaica, he scored an impressive 137 not out and was awarded Player of the Match. Things were looking good for the 30-year-old who, over the proceeding years, would knock off four more centuries and three shy of a dozen half centuries. He complemented this with 104 wickets across the three formats.

However, in a few short years the runs have all but dried up, with some critics claiming that Chase can’t buy a run far less make one. He now averages a paltry 26 in Tests and worse at 24 in one-day internationals (ODI), and has been dropped from the West Indies team across formats.

what a wonderful article, I love it, Butcher made some very important, points I thank the some thing applies to Darren Bravo, also I would love to see Butcher been offered Adams's Job if he is interested

Agreed. I think that Chase's best route back is as a right arm off spinner who can bat a bit. I think that is how he made it to the highest level in the first place, based on his bowling in the FC. Not too much competition in the region between persons with that particular skill as we seem to produce mainly left arm orthodox bowlers

you have it backward, Chase made it as a batsman scoring runs in the regional, he scarcely bowled for Bim 6 years ago.

The selectors are doing a better job destroying our players than they are in picking a team. While it is true that his batting has failed miserably it should be pointed that same period he has been one of our main wicket taker. In fact none of our spinners took more wickets than him and I am not too sure too many of our seekers took more wickets than him either. So it’s better to have him on the team as a bowler who takes wickets with five test centuries than to have a specialist spinner that’s not bowling out teams or scoring runs. All they needed to do is bat him down in the order

I sure agree with you bird. I would offer Butcher Jimmy Adam’s job and let Adams go back to the commentary booth where he does a much better job especially now Micky has returned
