Hearing David Murray is gone.......
In reply to nissan
David Murray was an outstanding wicketkeeper and very good batsman whose talents were never fully developed and nurtured due to off the field issues.Along with Jackie Hendriks and Mike Findlay he was out of the top drawer of West Indian wicketkeepers. His batting was classy and I remember an excellent innings he played against Kent during a West Indies tour of England.
Rest In Peace.
Rest In Peace
after the rebel tour of south africa his life went downhill bad both personally and professionally and he turned to the more negatice aspects of life which was sad for a man that people said was the best gloveman in the caribbean and a pretty talented batsman
Really sad news. We have lost many this year. Always rememeber hearimg that he was the best of the modern keepers. RIP and thanks for the memories
Looks like a heart attack - gone at 72.
RIP
RIP David Murray
Sorry to hear. David you were one of the best glovemen in annals of WI cricket.
You will always be remembered.
RIP
RIP! never saw much of his international game, was in Canada then but remember him making a big ton for Bim at #3, I think.
Rest In Peace Mr. Murray. Condolences to your family and friends and WI Cricket Fraternity.
My sincere condolences to David family.
I first met David in 1959 at Wesley Hall Primary school, we attended the coaching program, done by Foffie Williams.
I will always remember him telling me, I will have to keep wicket and he bowl, in a my last match in Barbados, a charity match played annually.
He saw him 25 years later, as I was having lunch with my sister, he called me by my surname and asked for a dollar, I am not going to say how much money I gave him.
A few days later I was watching a match at Wanderers, he was there, I was told by a well known artist in the Island, who knew us from our early cricket days, not to give him any money.
David was one of the best batsman I played with an against as a youngster, seeing in playing for the West Indies, always broth a smile.
I knew his history as a youngster and was happy for him.
I have a nephew in Canada and a cousin in Barbados, where drugs has taken full control of their lives, it is hard.
May David RIP.

Last saw him a couple years back in a shop behind the stadium with Collis.
Collis had the floor as he usually does. Murray didn't talk much.

MY FRIEND DAVID MURRAY
-------------------------------------
One look at the way he walked
How he scored each run
And there was no doubt that David Murray
Was Sir Everton Weeks' son
The bond he longed for
With his father
Was never really there
Yet he would smile
And throw his hurt
High in the atmosphere
We were Sunday School mates
Then Cricketing days
To his Dreads
After church
He'll sit or perch
Calling for Millie Penny Breads
He wasn't only short of Statue
But slim as slim could be
Yet none of us in his age group
Could hit a ball harder than he!
Primary Schools
Are suppose to play
Against Primary Schools
Wesley Hall Primary and St. Leonard's Secondary
Decided to bend the rules
We had Alfred Campbell
Richard Stoute and Company
Yet Wesley challenge we
Who were boys in Secondary!
We ' knew ' this was a Big Joke
(Well at least on paper).
A Primary School beating We?
Wid some unknown
' midget ' fella?
Dem win de toss
And decided tuh bat
Quick so Campbell got one
An outswinger
(Pitched on de offstump
A tick edge..
And he gone!
Coming in at number three
Was dis David Murray
When he approached de Wicket slowly
All ah we fields men
Start tuh laugh at he
He was so short and puny
And looking Suh Iutta Place
De pads dat he was wearing
Nearly touch e face!
Campbell bowled a bouncer
David handle it wid ease
Off de Backfoot
A vicious Hook
Dat end up in one ah de trees!
We shock!
We can't believe we eyes
Campbell rush in again
Offa de front foot dis time
Murray brek somebodee
Window Pane!
Tuh mek a long story short
David was a gun fuh hire
We could not get him out at all
At 109 he retire!
Talk bout licks
From a lil short man?
We witness it dat day
When it came to batting well
He put on a display!
To add insult tuh injury
And give de spectators goosebumps
David tek three spectacular catches
From behind de stumps!
He went on to play fuh Spartan
Then Barbados too
It wasn't long before he was in the West Indies team crew!
An ill-advised tour to South Africa
Made West Indies fans bark
Dem doan skylark
In de open not de dark
He was treated like an unwelcomed shark
He and all de others
(Some would say rightly so)
Dave has joined de ancestors
De Administrators
Never did let him go
Substance abuse
(That is never no use)
Engulfed my dear friend
Yet in his heart
Never did he part
From the West Indies Team
Right Tuh De End!
He was always a team player
In Heaven let him Bat
With his father at de other end
In de Middle...
They can have a chat.

Condolences to his friends and family. This is a sad thread. It is apparent that quite a few of the rebels developed issues once they returned.
Funny thing is, i was told the exact same thing regarding Richard Austin at Sabina Park. I was in the Headley stands and an administrator told me not to give him any more money.

Good Tribute Bro. Now he n Danny Germs will reminisced whether mistakes were made but most of all have some good laughs. Walk Good DM. Isn't this about the 3rd former Baje/WI player to collapse and die? Boyce, DM...

Sylvester Clarke (also on rebel tours )
We used to eat lunch together and talk about politics and Calypso hardly about cricket. Never once he asked me for money and I get the impression his dignified and humble manner revealed that dark period had passed.
However once I was curious after reading Viv said in an interview that he watched David Murray batting against spin in the nets when he was a rookie and he learnt from him....I then asked David about what I read Viv said and he looked at me fierce and said " What's wrong with you? That's my brother, that's my family!"
And very dignified and correct in his language and conversations...I used to feel if the opportunity was presented, he would have made a good cricket commentator...he had the knowledge and the delivery.

Wesley Hall Primary and St. Leonard's Secondary
That was hardback teenagers against boys.
I played against St. Leonards a few times, them guys were old, I remember wicketkeeping, Vincent Straker bowling a batsman, and the umpire noticing he was bowled, called no-ball.
Our coach ended the game forth with.
With his father
Was never really there
Most of us that attended the various coaching sessions were aware of it, he never spoke of his dad.
Richard Stoute and Company
Richard has no filter, he is super in the boys club,
Very sad!
David was one of my favorite cricketers
I met him in 1979 when I visited Barbados for the first time.
David the son of Sir Everton Weeks was a brilliant wicket keeper batsman
David never fulfilled that great promise he showed as an under wicket keeper batting at No 3.
May his soul Rest In Peace !
