HEADLINE: Former West Indies manager calls for Hoseins inclusion in Test squad

OMAR KHAN, the former Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies and Guyana Amazon Warriors manager, is calling for the inclusion of left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein in the WI Test team.
Hosein has featured in both the One Day International and T20 teams since making his international debut during the 2021 tour of Bangladesh, but he is yet to earn a Test call-up.
In the past two years, the West Indies have used Rahkeem Cornwall, Roston Chase (off-spinners); Jomel Warrican, Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie (left-armers) as main spin options, but none of those have been able to cement a place as the team’s go-to spinner.
The WI were swept 2-0 by hosts Australia a month ago, and they are set to play two Tests each away to Zimbabwe and South Africa, in February and March.
Fast bowler Jayden Seales will miss both trips due to an injured knee, but Khan does not fancy many changes to the squad who featured in Australia.
“I think definitely the nucleus of the Test team remains the same,” said Khan. “There is hardly any name popping up to take into consideration.”

It is easy to come to the conclusion that Omar Khan is just being parochial because he gives no reasons as to why Hosein should be included in the test squad.Saying that others have failed is not a reason why he should be called up but merely a reason to look elsewhere for those who have performed even better at the lower level or have demonstrated something special that the others have not shown.
Sadly Omar Khan does not deem it necessary to do any of that and merely says his countryman should be in the test squad. This approach is corrosive and leads to cynicism and equally parochial and downright insular responses.

Like Omar Khan, I believe he is the best spinner in the region
I would have selected him, since the English tour.

This reminds of the many calls for Pooran to be selected for test! How did that work out??? History repeating itself!

who else have been given a good opportunity, Moti was brought in recently, did not really performed poorly, but! discarded, look around the world, almost all the spinners that are playing, started poorly but were given time to develop, we should not be looking at one spinner, should be looking at two or three playin in the same test because we have garbage for fast bowlers, but we have no reservation recycling these garbage over and over again

Hosein seems like a good talent but now we see why not everyone can be trusted with team selection.
Although in fairness to Omar Khan, its difficult to assess players ability at test level when we do not have real international exposure or training for regional players outside of the test team. Imagine the first time WI Test Coaches see a player is after selection to test team, this is way too late to correct playing deficiencies.

Isn't this the same guy who recommended himself for a chance to feed at the trough?
Even in the coaching staff, they have to embed that kind of thinking in the players. We need to identify the right people to be part of the management team. I am recommending that I be part of that management team.

And like Omar Khan you provide ZERO EVIDENCE to buttress your conclusion.
Does Hosein have the best first class record amongst WI spinners?
Does Hosein have the best ODI record in terms of wicket taking amongst spinners to support a claim for a test spot?
Is there any evidence that Omar or yourself have looked at the above two parameters?
I know the answer to all 3 questions and I will give you a hint, the answer is the same for all 3!!!!!!!

I did not mention Narine because of the many time he had to work on his action, either than him, we have seen the two senior spinner Miiler and Permaul .
Permaul played 129 fc and Miller played 100 fc matches, they both could move the needle, they were both good at the regional level, was was never among the leading bowlers on the team.
It is like arguing how good Devon Smith was year after year at the regional level, I believe he was among the top batsman, during this year 4-day tournament.
Hosein has only played 24 fc matches, but from his List A, ODI and T20I, bowling at all stages during the white ball competition, he is miles ahead of any spinner in the region.

In my world, capitalist philosophy is marginally superior- you buy a talent or a flipper- do you coach or play? This format stereotyping? Does it make sense to you?
Dukes

In reply to Barry
Format stereotyping is silly, however unlike Nicky P, who has not played a particular format, this chap has played that format and his record is there to be scrutinized which his boosters have not done.

Hosein is currently playing in the Big Bash League in Australia.
Why would he give that up to play Test cricket for West Indies in Zimbabwe?
Omar Khan raising another pointless discussion....

You make some very valid points.
I've always found that the art of spin has been woefully mishandled in the West Indies.
I don't know of any clear plan to nature and develop spinners
Generally spinners have not been given far runs in the squad.

There is hardly any name popping up to take into consideration. Sir, how could any names be called when there is absolutely no first class cricket in the region at this time? So nobody is hitting form, no one is fit and management keeps organizing tours. No wonder against Australia in the last test two of our main bowlers were out and the replacement could only give us 2 overs in the entire match

Alas my friend, the only way you can show me to be insular is the show that I push people from my country over people from other territories even though my countrymen have inferior numbers.
ERGO you have to produce NUMBERS
All you guys do is either make snide remarks about me or just state a conclusion as to my motives as being insular with ZERO EVIDENCE
