HEADLINE: Towards West Indies cricket improvement

CaribbeanCricket.com 2023-01-10 13:59:34

PLAYERS ARE the end product of a cricket organisation, be it club or country, and their performances on the field of play, whether good, indifferent or bad, is very much representative of the strength, mediocrity, or weakness of that organisation. Therefore, all judgement is cast on the players, as they are the visible ones in that arrangement.

However, there are many facets of such an establishment. There’s the administration that creates the rules under which the governance of the system shall prevail. Hence, we have in Cricket West Indies (CWI), the guidance of West Indies cricket in order for their cricketers to be serious competitors on the world stage.

To do that, the current administration must have some idea on what is required and if they themselves are lacking in such knowledge, they ensure that they surround themselves with those who have that understanding. Or put another way, to attract those with at least a modicum of cricket intelligence.

It gives me no pleasure to write that in the light of WI’s bad and inconsistent performances in the past six months, CWI must review their administration standards in order to decide if their policies are substantial towards improvement and steady development for better cricket.

This is a very well written article by Mr Davis and I fully endorse everything said. I noted the following:

The development of cricket in the region must take place in every island with established programmes at schools, both secondary and primary, littered with qualified coaches…

The only thing missing is the role of our politicians especially our governments. For example, I visited the island of Dominica in November and after traveling from the airport down to Portsmouth and then to Roseau, what I saw and learnt about cricket there was heartbreaking. As I drove through the island I noticed all cricket grounds I once knew to be very lively had become very dormant and no sign of cricket. I then asked my driver about cricket in Dominica since I knew they produced some very great cricketers that played for West Indies and they always have a large crowd watching cricket at Windsor. I was shocked when he and others I spoke to told me that the last 10-14 years they have not seen any village or club cricket in Dominica and all they have seen is a little high school cricket that’s of very low standard. Not only that but they told the last 15 years their sports minister has always been a woman with no interest in cricket to the point that they can’t differentiate a pair of batting gloves to that of wicket keepers gloves.
I know that’s not the case in Barbados, Trinidad and Grenada. But if what has happened to cricket in Dominica is same in other islands I don’t see how we are going to get back close to our glory days with so many of our politicians more interested in selling passports and become millionaires instead of investing in our young players.

3Can't depend on schools and taxpayers to fund the development of a sport, why cricket and not football?

The Stark Fact is that the Solution to the competitiveness of West Indies Cricket must start with a Total Restructuring and disbanding of the current Entity that is
in the governance of West Indies Cricket. The current people in the WICBC relish aping those who founded the
WICBC, many years ago .

Quite frankly for many years the current Entity, Aka the West Indies Cricket Board has failed the Region. Those in
the governance of West Indies Cricket have bluntly refused to understand that their modus operandi is an utter failure.

It seems that THEY decided to ape those who founded the
WICBC and were a different hue than the current occupants of the West Indies Cricket Board. All to the detriment of
West Indies Cricket.

Until or unless there is a serious restructuring of the
Worst International Cricket Board in the Commonwealth WE
will be akin to spinning a Top in Mud.

It is indeed very sad that those in the Region who claim to be Sports Writers have for many years failed the Region,
by remaining silent with regard to the utter failures of
The Worst Cricket Board in Commonwealth, aka the WICBC.

Their job it seems is to excoriate Our Players while remaining silent regarding their Masters who are in the governance of West Indies Cricket. My belief is that those
in the Media who bluntly refuse to be critical of the WICBC
Must bear some responsibility for the state of Cricket in
the Region .

Unless there is a Total Restructuring of Cricket in the Region, WE will be running very fast but finding ourselves
in the same Place . The Governments in the Region must also
share some responsibility for the current state of West Indies Cricket in the International Cricket Arena. Their
passivity is also a factor regarding the current state of
West Indies Cricket.

Those in the Region who relish masquerading as Sports Journalists must also bear some responsibility for the state of the competitiveness of Cricket in the Region, and also the competitiveness of Our Players in the International Cricket Arena.

With All Due Respect, YOU are asking for Miracles, unfortunately that in my Opinion, aint going to change. What
in my opinion needs to happen is a completely Restructuring
of the WICBC and its Satellites in the Region.

The stark freaking fact is that the People in the WICBC do not ever intend changing their Modus Operandi. Quite frankly
in my opinion there needs to be a total Restructuring of
Cricket in the Region.

Unless that is done, those in the governance of Cricket in
the Region will be akin to trying to spin a Top in Mud. What is sad is the stark freaking fact that those in the
governance of West Indies Cricket do not ever intend to
change their Modus Operandi.

In my opinion , the stark Freaking Fact is that those in the governance keep perpetually aping the behavior of those
who started the WICBC and were of a different color than
those currently in the governance of Cricket in the Region.

They are so steeped in this asinine and archaic behavior
that They bluntly refuse to change their modus operandi, the
end result is that like the character in Alice in Wonderland are akin to the character " Running Very Fast
but find themselves in the same Place ".

It is time for the Governments have a very serious Meeting
with those in the governance of Cricket in the Region the
fact is that for a very long time, those in the Worst
International Cricket Board has bluntly refused to change
their modus operandi.

Like the Character in Alice in Wonderland, those in the
governance of West Indies Cricket are running very fast while Our standing in International Cricket is poor. The
Truth is that those in the governance of West Indies Cricket relish aping those who formed the WICB years ago,
and were of a different complexion than most of those
currently in the W I C B.

I agree with what You have stated here, years ago in both
Primary and Secondary Schools Youngsters used to be taught
the fundamentals of both Cricket and Football.

I have no idea whether that is currently done in the Region these days the gist of what I am suggesting is that the fundamentals of Cricket, Football,Basketball, and Netball for Girls, must be taught first at the Primary Schools level in the Region.

If that is not done in the Region WE will not progress in
those Sports . I do not think that this would be a monumental task to do, it should be obvious to all that being fully versed in the basic fundamentals of those Sports will raise the standard of Sports in the Region.

In my opinion it is very disappointing and disheartening that this article has not garnered much attention in this Forum .
Quite frankly my belief is that the lack of criticism in this Forum and in the Region.

My belief is that the lack of criticism, by those who claim
to be Sports Journalists in the Region for many years is the
main reason why the Worst International Cricket Board in the Commonwealth needs to undergo very serious changes in its Structure.

Unless that is done Cricket in the Region , will be running very fast but finding itself in the same Place . I am sure
that former Players would be like to help Our current Players hone their Skills.
