reat interview; Compelling story; I could not leave it until the end. I'd always heard he had a heart condition but did not know what it was until today; something similar to what Christopher Gayle got corrected in Australia and Christopher Taylor also got corrected (not sure where).

Great singer! Leads the class of Derrick Hariot, Desmond Dekker, Vic Taylor, and Jackie Opel.

I listened to the first 12 minutes. Will listen to it in full later.
I met Boris Gardiner probably 1968 when he came to Guyana.
No,I did not go to his show in Guyana since I was only around 11 years old but he got sick and his whole group came to our house as he came to see my mother about his illness. While he was in her office I was like a pig in mud talking to the other members of his group.I distinctly remember the drummer who asked me what was my favorite song by the group and I must have told him some slow crooning song and he said WHAT in disappointment as he thought I would mention one of the songs that had him featured.I think his name might have been ?McDonald and he was a great percussionist and played some uptempo songs the had him featuring on the drums. It is quite hazy but maybe some old timers could give the drummer's correct name and some of the songs he featured in.

What about Dobby Dobson?
Isn't he in that same class?

Larry McDonald was indeed the greatest drummer even exceeding Lloyd Knibbs of the Skatalites. But Knibbs was more popular.

I believe Larry McDonald played the congos while Knibbs played the drums, and he also played congos in the late Gil Scott-Heron's band for awhile.

Thanks.I can remember that chat with McDonald and the look he gave me when I said some slow crooning tune as my favorite BG song.

Listened to about 40 minutes into the interview and it is amazing to hear BG say that he was probably even more popular in Guyana than in Jamaica. That seemed to be the case with Ken Lazarus as well.He also mentioned Floyd McDonald and his brother as part of the band.Disappointing to hear about how Byron Lee fleeced him out of Royalties from Elizabethan Reggae but I can't say I am surprised.
BG is a great guy !!!!

Just imagine that both Lloyd Parkes and Boris Gardner only became Bass Players because someone from their band went missing!!!

The beauty about the Teach Dem series of interviews is that unlike traditional media - he does not editorialize..he gives the subjects free rein to tell their stories in their own words…No opinions. No paraphrasing. No sensationalizing…what you see is what you get…

In this instance - it was absolutely beautiful listening to a legend of the musical game in his own words…this is not Wikipedia. This is the unvarnished truth….
