Miriam Makeba came to Guyana several times in the 1960's.She was in love with Forbes Burnham and performed several times in Guyana.A few years later a younger South African singer Letta Mbulu also came to Guyana and performed at Queens College. Those were the days when Guyana was huge in the non-aligned movement and we had Indira Ghandi and Julius Nyerere come to Guyana.

Well, I was born in the ‘60s so I’m aware of the the visiting Heads of State that came in the ‘70s. In those days Forbes used to offer free bus rides to Timehri to welcome them.
I only took advantage of a free ride to Kuru Kuru College! lol

She was in love with Forbes Burnham

So she was a poor judge of character.

I'm a jazz fanatic so my first childhood memory of SA is seeing Hugh Masekela and the musicians from Stimela(Ray Phiri, Bakithi Khumalo and some other fantastic musicians) perform Bring Him Back Home on Musical Passport on Bet Jazz in the mid 2000s(which became BETJ, then Centric, then BET Her; none of which i watch ) . He was performing during the Graceland Tour's concert in Zimbabwe. Makeba performed Soweto Blues and Jinkele Maweni(the running song) during that concert as well. Long story short, it was quite possibly the most significant musical experience of my life.

When it comes to affairs of the heart, women are poor judges.

yeah....i actually heard that record a few years later when to vacation in JA with my aunt and uncle. I think she and Hugh were married for a few years as well. Then she went to Guinea with Stokely Charmichael, and recorded a few singles and i think one or two records with a few of the state sponsored orchestras. You should check it out. Sings in French and Mande, as well as in english. Stern's Africa released it on a compilation called Miriam: The Guinea Years.

Man ah love #1 yuh Si! So imagine me when I came out here and The Great Hugh Masakela (Miriam's former husband) lived this side and played fairly regularly at The 200 person venue Ashkenaz.
I saw him at SF Jazz also. Some of my happiest moments was seeing him play but especially when he played that tune. I thank Harry Belafonte for helping to ensure Miriam's talent shone bright worldwide.
