Kraigg should pull a Who Wants to be a Millionaire and ask Temba - Is that your final answer

In reply to Narper
ah getting a double ton from Bavu
Shukri Conrad, a veteran coach but in his first Test series in charge of South Africa, dismissed the notion as if it were an abject long hop: "Would the same question have been asked if it was someone else? Players get pairs. I'd hate to think it's because it's Temba, and because of the spotlight that's been on him over the last couple of months."
Since the start of his career in December 2014, Bavuma has faced more balls and scored more runs than anyone except Dean Elgar among South Africa's active players. But he is a frequent target for abuse, much of it racist. It doesn't help that Bavuma presided over his team's meltdown at the T20 World Cup in Australia in October and November.
In reply to Narper

I stay away from the prediction business, but will venture one here.
We will not lose.

If West Indies batting first-235
If South Africa batting first-289
In reply to shivnotout
The thread had me laughing but your contribution reminds me that
When the 1st Black African Batsman to represent SA was just getting
started in his debut inning he edged a four and the bowler and thug
Ben Stokes found it convenient to yell to him you're sh.t, you're nothing!

For West Indies, it is just the one change. Gudakesh Motie comes in for Shannon Gabriel.
So there are three changes for South Africa -- Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj are in. Keegan Peterson, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen and Senuran Muthusamy are out.
9.35am Here are the XIs.
South Africa: 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Tony de Zorzi, 4 Temba Bavuma (capt), 5 Ryan Rickelton, 6 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Simon Harmer 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Gerald Coetzee
West Indies: 1 Kraigg Braithwaite (capt), 2 Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3 Raymon Reifer, 4 Jermaine Blackwood, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Kyle Mayers, 7 Joshua da Silva (wk), 8 Jason Holder, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Gudakesh Motie
9.30am Time for the toss. South Africa win the toss and bat. Temba Bavuma says the wicket looks dry and is expected to crack up later, so he wants to put runs on the board when the batting conditions are the best.
South Africa won the toss...to bat...
West Indies (Playing XI): Kraigg Brathwaite(c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Raymon Reifer, Jermaine Blackwood, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers, Joshua Da Silva(w), Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Gudakesh Motie
South Africa (Playing XI): Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma(c), Ryan Rickelton, Heinrich Klaasen(w), Wiaan Mulder, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Gerald Coetzee, Kagiso Rabada
Poor team selection......by West Indies.....
In reply to Onionman0
Who did you want to see selected?
We could bowl out South Africa twice....now with the dropping of Gabriel, we are bowler short....Chase or Mayers should have been dropped....
24 / 0....7 overs.... let's wait and see...who comes as first change...Mayers or Holder????
In reply to Onionman0
Gabriel failed to impress on a Centurion pitch tailor-made for pace. It's right that he should make way for Motie, on a Wanderers pitch that helped spin in the SA20.
I agree that Mayers should've been dropped, but probably for Thomas, IMHO.
39/0

I agree wholeheartedly. Lets hope one of Mayers or Chase makes a significant impact.

123/1....in 25 overs......
This idiocy of 1st change Mayers bowling....Mayers is poor version of Sammy!!! Coaches and captain open bat & ball with Mayers in white ball inspite repeated failures...now in test also...
i keep on saying it specialists bowlers are the way to go unless you have a real worldclass allrounder thiscontinued tactic of trying to have batting down to number 8 has back fired cause they still getting bowled out for under 250 and the bowling is rubbish
Come allyuh regroup - better bowling and fielding now

Holder to Bavuma, out Lbw!! Holder has been West Indies' best bowler on show today and he finally has something to show for his efforts. He is expert at using the crease and creating those angles, especially against right-handers. Went wide, angled the ball in and it did just enough to smack the prodding front pad of Bavuma. The South African skipper expected the ball to leave him late and shouldered arms, wasn't to be. Since he wasn't playing a shot, the impact (which is well outside off) didn't matter. Good decision from umpire Marais Erasmus and not so good review from Bavuma considering the height at which the ball pinged him (just below the knee roll).

Motie to de Zorzi, out Bowled!! Another milestone denied and it's Motie once again. Lovely loop and drift from Motie, gets the ball to pitch in that in-between length and beats the outside edge. de Zorzi was lunging across to drive and perhaps got carried away with the flight there, the ball dips cunningly and curls past the swinging blade to hit the top of off.
de Zorzi b Motie 85(155) [4s-11]

Length delivery slanting across outside off, Rickelton hangs back and slashes at it only to find a thick outside edge, Joshua Da Silva has no trouble in holding on to that one. Disappointing outing for Rickleton, he'd have hoped for more on a flat deck like this.

Umpire like he went school at Cawmere!!
In reply to Onionman0
Did you see those two punches from Mayers?
In reply to Windiesfan78
Yes!!! Saw many posters jumping from trees after watching Chase score a brilliant 55 , (who infact was selected as premier spinner)against Australia in the 2nd inning of the 2nd test batting at no.8.....and selectors in unison with jumping posters promoted to him to pivotal no.5......
Now Mayers our 1st change bowler, who bowled only 6 overs ...wasting the 1st new ball.... conceding over 4 runs/ over....Given another chance with 2nd new ball....took 2 brilliant wickets... when Saffies already above par score....posters punching and knocking all and sundry.......now ,I assume Mayers will start with new ball in test cricket as he did in the white ball cricket specially in T-20 under Ice- Cream man.... we reach new heights in World Cup T-20 2022.....

Problem with Myers the skipper doesn't bowl him enough, this is a guy with a lot of energy that can do much more bowling.

Philander made a career out of what Mayers does with the ball.
Its a bonus he can bat a bit.
In reply to camos
Where average 1st inning score is 310... South Africa already 311....I assume it's repeat of the 1st test.....only thing, whether West Indies will suffer follow on or won't be enforced.....
If I was Kyle, I would be picking Philanders brain while in SA.
In reply to Onionman0
You doan worry about Chase Onion, the man of the moment is Mr. Mayers. I don't think a lot of people realise how talented this man is. The problem is that he is not living up to his potential because he often throws away his hand by being ultra aggressive. Take note of the following:
In 17 test matches, Kyle Mayers has taken 28 wickets @ an average of 19.42. He also has a 5 wicket haul against England. That is nothing to scoff at and I expect big things from one of the best, if not currently the best allrounder on our team.
I cannot forget Motie who is showing the selectors the huge mistake they made when leaving him out of the team. He is proving to be the spinner we wanted and should be commended for his efforts.
In reply to Windiesfan78
The Lord Mayer has shown that he is a wicket taker.
I would like to see more frequent short spells from him
In reply to Onionman0
SA will probably make another 20, how much deviation is that from the mean?
Same situation they were in the first match they bowl badly in the first two session come back in the last. hope they bat better than in the last match
In my option the match is somewhat evenly balance - there are no advantages... But I must commend our bowlers for the hard-work they put in to finished the day strong after a solid opening partnership. WE need to wrap-up things below 350, and if our openers put-up a good partnership of around 150, i think we'll have a chance to salvage the match...
Let's Go Windies.
In reply to camos
Mean, mode or median?
In reply to culpepperboy
the average of all three!
not sure taking the new ball was a good idea.I thought the old ball was doing the trick and motie could have picked up a couple more with the old ball.New ball could have been used early morning.
But as it is, we did get a few wickets, good ooutcome depends on how quick we can get them out tmrw, maybe an hour into the days play for another 25 runs would be good.
In reply to Narper
Yup, I fully agree!
In reply to camos
Wait till we bat.... conceding over 120 runs in 1st session and further 100.in second...on this pitch....poor captaincy...poor bowling...except Holder our 4th bowler...err 5th

In the context of the game, why take such a risky single? Its very early in the inning and not necessary. Tage clearly was not expected to be called and got a late start. A more experienced batsman would have have said no.

Batsman want to get off the mark.
We all played the game and understand that.

I get that but in the context of the game and a weak middle order
.why take an unnecessary risk with your opening partner.

Who know why we do so many unnecessary things.
I am only pointing out to posters, that Tage could had said no, to the single.
It was unfortunate run out, hope Tage is big enough to say yes or no, next time.

Why is West Indies so fearful of blooding new players?
Its a shame Jordan and Athanaze did not play in this match when you have non-performers in the lineup.
Jordan should have played instead of Chase and Athanaze instead of Mayers.
Holder is the alrounder on the team. Pick frontline bowlers and batsmen.
We have Reifer, Chase, Mayers, Holder in the same test team. Madness!

Captain paint should have been more aggressive when SA lost three wickets thru Mayers and although Reifer who
is not a bowler now a days had got a wicket..the ball should have been in the hands
of Joseph,Roach and Holder in the main after that with more attacking fields.

Alzarri Joseph to Mulder, no run, that's pinged him on the right thumb. Extra bounce on this skiddy back of a length delivery, Mulder looks to tuck leg-side and gets defeated by the extra zip off the surface. Holder to Harmer, out Lbw!! A breakthrough late in the day for the Windies. Length delivery just outside off, Harmer shuffles across looking to defend but it angles in and keeps a touch low. Don't go there bro, he already have Motie and Chase.
With the new ball, I would think Joseph would be given the new cherry, looking at the scoreboard not seeing him bowl, is the reason for my question.
With our batting so fragile, is this team needs the inconsistency of all the so cal allrounders on it?
The next test team selection should be one that start a building process.
Holder or Mayers stay, no room for Chase or Reifer.

Do I detect a hint of selectivism in your post above?
Isn't this comment relevant for other batsmen?
We may be all out before Narper wakes up to perform di last rites
In reply to Courtesy
No, just bleeding logic.
Chase averages 26 with the bat from 48 Tests. That's just not good enough.
We have a number of batsmen who average in the 30s, which isn't great, but a damn sight better than the 20s. We have to move on from the 20-something players, and build on batsmen who average 30 and above.
It's time to say goodbye to the likes of Roston Chase, John Campbell and Kieran Powell.
In reply to mikesiva
Time to consider Bravo, King and Athanaze.
In reply to WICFan
I think the options do include a potential recall for Bravo and/or Bonner. But King needs to signal his interest in Test cricket by playing for Jamaica in the regional four-day competition this month. I'm not convinced that he will.
I hope Athanaze gets a chance sooner rather than later.
Let's see who else scores runs in the next few rounds of the regional four-day competition.
In reply to mikesiva
We have a number of batsmen who average in the 30s, which isn't great, but a damn sight better than the 20...

The above quote is pathetic to be overly generous. But I also detect that these illogical excuses serve to insulate "my fellow man."
Does "in their 30's" mean 35 and above and how far removed is 30 from 26 (not even considering that Chase functions as an allrounder, albeit a poor one)?
NB: The "30.83 guy" under reference has a slightly bigger sample size.
In reply to mikesiva
King will be on International duty during the rest of the domestic season.
In reply to Courtesy
Nobody can accuse you of having anything sensible to say.
In reply to WICFan
And instead of playing the first two rounds of the regional four-day competition for Jamaica, King chose to play t20 cricket in the UAE. That tells me that King would rather play franchise cricket to Test cricket, unfortunately.
In reply to mikesiva

In reply to mikesiva
Fortunatlely, this says more about you. Your petticoat is showing.
And you appear to have no sense of fairness and justice. That much is quite evident.
What justifies a batsman who has played 54 tests yet averages 30.83 selective status?
This is another sad day for West Indies cricket. It shows us that the team just isn't good enough. The lowest score in Test history for West Indies is 47 against England in the second innings of the first Test of the English cricket team in the West Indies in 2003-04. At least we have passed that. The issue is that we have a serious problem with our batting. I am glad to see that we are taking 20 wickets but this also needs improvement. Stats don't lie and when you compare the batting averages of our players to those of our opponents, it is a sad state of affairs.
Arrite we clear di 71 - 298 to go

Holder gawn now - start Taps
In reply to Courtesy
Not today Courts, not today . I am just glad to see them get past 47. I really don't expect much from a team that doesn't play enough test cricket. Also, our players are more interested in 'lickit' cricket, which mind you, is still poor as well. You would at least think that would be our best format based on the amount of franchise cricket played. The problem once again is our batting. By the way, I don't feel like pointing a finger today at any of the players.
82/7, can we make 3 figures?
In reply to Windiesfan78
Good on you.
I say boldly: if Roston Chase should get "his pension" (and I am not arguing against this) so to, are a lot more batsmen on the team.
In reply to Chrissy
Not bad Chrissy, Hopefully you are wrong by 300+ runs .
In reply to Windiesfan78
Very bad - Josh gawn now and we haven't cleared di 91
In reply to Courtesy
Chase is not the problem, he is part of a failed system. Chase was one of the most talented up and coming allrounders at one stage. Form doesn't fall off a cliff overnight. I have no answers to how to improve this team and if you play, you get paid. Give the players what is due to them I say.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Temba Bavuma
Highlights of the game:
- Markram, de Zorzi star with the bat on day 1
- Windies display great fightback in final session of the first 2 days
- Bavuma leads South Africa's dominance (day 3) with his career best
- Rabada gets Brathwaite 4/4 in this series
- Maharaj injures himself while trying to celebrate Mayers' wicket
- Combined brilliance from bowlers lead to Windies' (2nd innings) collapse
Aiden Markram | Player of the Series:
It is satisfying. We are all chasing series win at the end of the day. The lesser said the batter (about the shot when he was on 96) and learning from it hopefully. At the end of the day you still want to make it big and not get satisified with the 100, it is all part of the learning and next time when the opportunity comes I'll try to correct that. You look at his (Bavuma) knock in this game, he went onto make 170, that's what all players are trying to do and buy into it. It's been a satisfying series for us as a team and it is what matters at the end of the day.
Rolled out of bed to watch WI, but the match wasnt on Willow so i checked the score and found out our batsman didnt get out of dugout, literally Very poor batting in the 2nd innings. Would not call out any player, because the whole pack sucked Nevertheless, Holder and DeSlva were the most consistent with bat
Looking back, the bowlers took 40 wickets. Questionable first sessions, we gave them too many runs. We just didn't bat well enough, simple as that. I still think we took some good steps, in the first Test we were in some good positions. Bowling wise, 40 wickets in the series was good. At crucial times we were too expensive but a serious improvement from Australia. Batting wise, we weren't good enough. Next step will be in July against India at home. Away from home we haven't got runs. We can work on the technical flaws but the mind has to be in the right place. It'll never be easy facing fast bowling so the belief has to be there. I can say and the coach can say but it won't make a difference. We've done it before so we can do it again. We have to show that we are top batsmen against good bowlers. Extremely disappointed. Especially today, it was feeling good. Very disappointed, as a leader you have to lead from the front and it didn't happen in this series
Temba Bavuma | Player of the match and South African captain: It's a nice sound to hear, good to see that people came out here on a Saturday to see us take the trophy. Very satisfied, I've been in situations where the team needs me to rebuild and I was able to do that yesterday. Hopefully I can do it more often, convert those situations into big runs. (On playing 2 spinners) It was massive, we thought it was a great decision. We hoped that the conditions would end up playing this way. The guys came out and played their roles so quite pleasing. (On Test cricket) Big conversation, I've said my part, we're a team that's building something of substance to give the fans something to enjoy. Unfortunately we'll only be donning the whites in December this year so hopefully the people in power can do something about that.
