Naming my son after him was a no-brainer: Why

Sunil Gavaskar named Rohan Gavaskar after this legendary West Indies cricketer?
Fascinating

When his international career as team India batter commenced, he was interestingly off the mark as a result of an umpiring error. Thereafter, just five Test matches into his career, he became the centre of attraction of the English media after he was pushed down the ground by pacer John Snow, which eventually handed the latter a one-match ban.

The duo named their son Rohan, decided by Gavaskar himself, and which also involved an interesting back story from his debut Test series against the West Indies.

Rohan Kanhai, the former West Indies batter with 79 Test matches and 15 centuries under his name, would turn up on the field as a Sunil Gavaskar well wisher, cheering him secretly to score a hundred during latter’s debut series in 1971.
As unbelievable as it might sound, Rohan would offer him a tip or two, come up with certain advises, would motivate him to concentrate harder in order to score a century – all of this while fielding for the West Indies during the match and in a manner that he wouldn’t get caught by his teammates.

Not to be outdone, Narine's father named him after Gavaskar.
Truth be told, there were a lot of boys christened Sunil back then!

There are a lot of Sachins around in TT now also! big grin

Oz spinner Bob Holland named a son after Khanhai too.

One of my sister's neighbours in Miami has a son named Rohan - the parents are from India and said they named him after RBK. Interestingly Jamaica has the most Rohans on the planet - all after RBK. -

RBK was known to help youngsters with their game irrespective of teams. I was at Bourda North stand Shell shield game against Jamaica. A young Dowe was just starting in his career and he made the colossal mistake of youth…bouncing to the Guyana Babu. Both bouncers were nonchalantly dispatched into the stands/rails…one actually went plumb into GFC. After the second consecutive bouncer was dispatched RBK went down the wicket and had a few words with Dowe. The crowd roared sensing RBK was giving him the business. After returning from lunch Tony Cozier was on commentary and he said he took the opportunity to ask Dowe what RBK said to him. Cozier related that Dowe shared that RBK said to him that he is a young fast bowler and if you were going to bowl bouncers you don’t direct it on middle/legstump going to leg it’s giving the batsman six runs. Instead bowl on off/middle into the body. RBK was boss.

I am glad somebody mentioned this. Adams, Lara and Ambrose said he was always one of their favorite coaches. Very approachable and willing to help young people. Wes Hall was anther person like that. Sobers too. Which is not something we in the West Indies are known for.

Good spirit, RBK wasn't a bowler so as long as he didn't intentionally drop him no probs.
Dat Rohan could bat.

RBK and Mikey Holding two of a kind. MT used to be helping Indian bowlers. I was at Kensington on the field at a practice and Mikey was approached by a young Indian quick, several times, for guidance.

Sobers also gave tips - take King's Bounty in race 7

Test cricketers were like gods back in the days, you'ld read cricket books, even read pictures, and listen to interviews when players came in for test matches. I remember RBK telling Lindy how much he loved Reggae music and that this was his favourite song . cool

What a character The Rev. Wesley Winfield Hall. Feel so lucky to have met him.
Truly down to earth and humorous human. Alf Valentine said a girl from Bim wrote a letter
to Hall and said since you're on tour to England you can please afford to send a pound.
Hall's reply- 'I would've sent it but forgot to put it in the envelope before sealing it'

Wes took me on at a Cricket Seminar in Bim during a test series. He's an interesting. When I think about it I have really been lucky to meet, interview and engage or be engaged by so many of our greats, very good, good and also ran cricketers.

I was in the middle of interviewing Viv at the ARG after Brian had passed IVAs highest test score (on his way to the world record). Try and calculate the odds of that happening at a pre-arranged interview

Some of these guys develop friendship.
Sir Everton told me about a snorter he receive fro a fast bowler, it was the 1960 series in Australia, ge failed to show up for a card game after the days play and was greeted with a snorter the next day when batting.
As the bowler finish his delivery, he continued down the side of the pitch he whisper, Thats for not showing up to play poker last night.

That was Sir Everton.I was playing cricket in the road one summer morning, my Games master came and took e to watch a game between Barbados Juniors and Jamaica, one of my school mates was playing.
During the Car ride to the game, he handed me a paper to read an article, which stated my buddy last inning which he scored 80 runs, one can see he is coached by Everton Weekes.
As soon as I got to the pavilion, I looked for a place to hide, my Games master would cuss every body, and it was Everton Weekes time for being cuss.
All I heard was whendid you f-ing coached Vincent Straker, he went on to speak of his days at Lodge school and really humiliating himself.
I reminded Sir Everton about that, one day in Calgary, and asked why he was so quiet and never responded to the comments.
He simply ask me, Was he the writer of the Article?
What I find interesting about Sir Everton, was him telling me why he gave light so readily when ask by the batsman.
He said all the players are Amateurs, some of them have families and jobs, getting hit by a ball, not able to support your family will be hard.
I was always upset when he gave light so quickly. I had to look at him as someone with a heart.

Easy to believe.
Sometimes they are reading death announcements on radio and I hear that somebody St Aubrun somebody has died. You just know that he was named after Sobers..

Did you know that George Headley’s Bajan father was de Coursey Headley and Everton’s father named him Everton Decourcy Weekes.

There are more than a few Brian Charles whatever in the region as well.

A lot of of fans see athletes and not as fortunate as some to actually sit and have a conversation with them, Mohammed Ali love people, a truly good promoter.
He would had gone to prison for his cause, which he believe in.
Floyd Patterson was more jealous of Ali and all the press he was getting, but Ali knew if he is going to move forward, Floyd would be part of the pie, that was available
I am not sure if Floyd understood it.
