is it because they don't bowl too many short pitch deliveries in ODIs

Short deliveries not the main problem for him
Fuller length in the corridor and he either nicks off to the keeper/cordon especially to the moving ball
Or, driving on the up caught from point to cover.
Then when they aim at the stumps his bat comes down around his legs and he gets LB or bowled
Check his mode of dismissals
