HEADLINE: Ex-Windies batsman Sarwan questions Sammy's selection as coach

CaribbeanCricket.com Jun 1, 2023, 10:16:38 AM

Former West Indies star batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan questioned the Cricket West Indies` selection of Daren Sammy over Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the West Indies white-ball coach.

The former West Indies captain Sammy, who won T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016, was appointed coach of the West Indies T20 and 50-over teams on May 12 by CWI.

The decision on the coach was made by Jimmy Adams (CWI's director of cricket), Enoch Lewis, (Chairman of cricket committee), Oneka Martin-Bird, (HR manager), Debra Coryat-Patton (Independent director), and (CWI president) Kishore Shallow.

Posting on his Facebook page Sarwan said, “Twenty-two persons/coaches were interviewed for the white ball coaching position. However, two were shortlisted. The big question is why were the other twenty (20) persons/coaches not made known to CWI directors, and why is this a big secret and is being kept away from the cricketing public? In the interest of transparency, those names should have been made available, at least to directors of CWI.”

I fully support what Ronny is saying, what is the harm in letting the public know who were the 20 applicant, by the way, I have no problem with Sammy's selection

But that is not what Sarwan is saying- he is questioning Sammy ahead of Chanderpaul, a wicked thing to do.

What is Sarwan's motivation? He should be rallying around Sammy and the team.

Emir Jun 1, 2023, 12:40:28 PM

Sarwan has business holding in Guyana.

Is it important he gets support form the Guyanese public for his business to flourish?

Is it possible media publicity can help his business in Guyana?

Can Sarwan be more transparent on his motivation?

While I disagree with sars, I can assure you this isn’t business motivated. Sarwan has got a massive business comprising malls, restaurants, gyms and he doesn’t need any money. So stop talking stupid

What an ignorant and insular post. Sarwan is asking for transparency. You advertise a post and give a criteria. Two applicants are short listed. One of the two does not have the qualifications, but fine, you are the employer. But while a private club called CWI, you supposedly represent all of us, the West Indies people. So tell us your thought process.
Any coach will be drinking from a poisoned chalice because if anyone believes that any coach can wave a magic wand and fix all the problems in WI cricket, you must be taking some serious drugs.

First of all I personally don't have an issue with Sammy being the white ball coach, however, Sammy isn't fully qualified for the position without a level 3 coaching certification. It would be interesting though to know the rest of the applicants especially the other short listed one?

Talking about Short Listed, how does Shiv measure up to $ammy?

In my opinion Sammy is a better white ball coach than Chanderpaul because Chanderpaul was not a regular ODI or T20 player whereas Sammy didn’t only play both versions but he led West Indies to two championships. If anything Sawan should question the selection of Coley as test coach ahead of Chanderpaul

You saying Coley doesn’t have the qualifications?

culpepperboy Jun 1, 2023, 7:39:19 PM

How can a person coach this 6 or out junk?

Absolutely, correct...Sammy has zero experience as ODI coach....T-20 coaching experience only 2 leagues...but has a vision that no other applicant could match...moreover, Sammy has already started level 3 training in Antigua under CWI...All Sammy posters clap...

Sammy has already started level 3 training in Antigua under CWI
What is level 3 training, and how did CWI acquire the competence to train someone in it? and if CWI is so capable in administering this training, why has the team been such a laggard? Is the aim of this training incompetence, if yes, why is Sammy taking training in it, is it to become competent in incompetence? This all seem like malfeasance to me….as a great philosopher once ask: Does there exist a world outside of self?

wink wink big grin

No way Sammy is qualified for that job. He cannot be a passenger any longer. The two cups he won were on the backs of others. CWI, smh.

All the talk n who la la...what happen the certified coach who came have done..

There where senior player in sarwan who disrepected certified coaches and sarwan himself may have been one that did not cooperate with certified coaches.
