HEADLINE: Hope defends Holder after super-over shambles

CaribbeanCricket.com Jun 29, 2023, 10:34:28 AM

WEST INDIES captain Shai Hope has defended his decision to give all-rounder Jason Holder the super-over, amid criticism of team tactics during his side’s shock defeat to the Netherlands in the ICC World Cup Qualifier on Monday.

After scores were tied at 374 in the Group A contest at the Takashinga Sports Club, the experienced Holder was on the receiving end of a hiding from Logan van Beek, the 31-year-old seamer sending down a poor over, which yielded 30 runs.

Van Beek then took the ball to lead the Dutch side’s defence of the total, inflicting West Indies with a second straight defeat following their loss to Zimbabwe last weekend.

“Hindsight is the best sight. Jason could’ve come and bowled the best over, bowled a maiden and we won the game,” Hope told reporters on Tuesday.

3 cheers for Shai! It could have happened to any/most bowlers! Pundits, if you did, do it again & expound what were the other bowling options & why.
cool

camos Jun 29, 2023, 10:58:24 AM

The criticisms should be directed at Hope and not Holder, he as the captain made the bad choice; the game should never have reached that stage.

Holder has already bowled the final over and won games for us. He did it against Bangladesh and got 4 wickets in a row against England. He is our most experienced bowler and Hope shouldn't take the blame for Holder's poor performance. The point is that the collective effort of our bowlers should have been enough to defend 374.

imusic Jun 29, 2023, 11:50:15 AM

“But it is a learning opportunity for us. We know that if Jase is put in that situation again, we’re backing him 120 per cent to deliver for us.

These 2 sentences appear to be at odds

What are you really learning if you put Jason in the same situation again?

mikelegend Jun 29, 2023, 12:03:00 PM

Look!!!! The fact that Jason Holder, our MOST EXPERIENCED seam bowler took such hiding by a second tier ‘batsman’ in a CRUNCH situation is an EMBARRASSMENT of the highest order!!! He failed MISERABLY at his Job. Nothing to “learn” here, he simply took us LOWER!! Imagine Van Beek doing that to a George Ferris or a Tony Gray, or a Dave Elcock…steeeeuuuuuuuupes!!! Nothing further.

Agreed! Holder's bowling was atrocious...and our most experienced bowler, former cappo and no.1 allrounder in the world!

Calypso cricket !!! I am sure it was a big celebration for the BIM boys. Another accomplishment for the record books. Go Shai Hope, your friend earned it. Unable to get a single dot ball.

Nothing Calypso about Holder's super over bowling! Nothing! In the days of Calypso Van Beek would be having dental appointments! No self respecting fast bowler of the Calypso generation was giving VB another hit me ball after the first 6 shot!

PalsofMine Jun 29, 2023, 12:24:56 PM

JaHo was terrible in that over but I would defend Hope's choice to go with his most experienced bowler.

Dude. ALL death bowlers get THUMPED from time to time.

The best of them get THUMPED less often.

Dwayne Bravo is reputed to be one of the best ever death bowlers. He took massive licks on several occasions.

Kudos to Holder for “manning up”.

Nuff bowlers in that situation want nothing to do with death bowling. It takes a certain type of character to volunteer for that.

Kind of like firefighters rushing into a burning building.

That being said, I don’t think Holder is the most effective death bowler. Alzari just showed in the same match how he was effective doing it. But maybe he simply didn’t want the responsibility and JHo stepped up.

What is the skipper/team to do then? He has the experience. He has ability. He backed himself. It didn’t come off.

So what are you saying, Holder will be given back the captaincy and invent a West Indian form of Bazzball?

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! While I agree that EVERYONE takes licks, Jason Holder took licks from a SECOND TIER ‘batsman’ because HE BOWLED ABSOLUTE TRASH not because the batsman was being creative to good deliveries. He simply FAILED at his mission! Again as THE MOST EXPERIENCED bowler in the squad it was extremely embarrassing to watch. He must and can do better! Then again, I am just part of the ‘outside noise”….

FOCUS ON OUR OWN AND STOP WITH THE WHATABOUTISM!!! Carlos Braithwaithe is a far better technician than Van beek. Besides, who is the more improved allrounder today? Holder or Stokes? Stop making excuses for OUR guys. He FAILED, he can and must do better. The end.

THIS is the type of thing these guys don’t seem to understand. I also don’t understand why these fellas are being so defensive of mediocre bowling from our most senior bowler in the crunch. Especially against a second tier lower order batsman. The guy bowled very poorly, that is all. Steeeuuuupes!

in my business it is quite useful to compare like situations for any exceptions, likeness or anomalies.

what you submitted invited a comparison with Carlos Brathwaite's case not because of the batsman but the bowler. you say Van Beek is not as good a batman as Carlos but i dont think Ned would have sent him out if they did not think he could get the job even if they did or did not know the opposing bowler.

in CB's case he took his chances with whomever was going to bowl that last over. that it was Stokes offers a useful and deliciously comparable situation to JHo's. I would submit that Stokes was and is a much better bowler than JHo even if Van Beek (seek Not Dinas's opinion on CB's batting) is not as good a batsman as CB.

i am on record as positing that JHo is bits and pieces but when i see shoite commentary like this i must defend it from a comparative position to show whether it is usual or if on any given Sunday any thing can happen

a championship was on the line in Stokes's case and not in JHo's

regarding your remark to wit- Besides, who is the more improved allrounder today? Holder or Stokes?- i am at a lost to understand how it furthers your contention, such as it is.

therefore it is my considered opinion that the Stokes matter and JHo matter are comparable for the purposes of rendering your submission above as shoite, and a lot of shoite.

1. Has Jason Holder improved his all round ability( in this particular case - his bowling) from the time he was deemed the number one all rounder in the world? If your answer is a resounding NO, then he as THE SENIOR AND MOST EXPERIENCED seamer in the attack is a major part in the ‘we can go lower’ mantra.

2. In this particular match, Jason Holder bowled a completely SHOITE over. It did not require much skill from a second tier lower order batsman to dismiss (no wide Yorkers, no precision faster or slower delivers…did he even try going around the wicket?). It was unacceptable from such a seasoned campaigner, who doesn’t need any critiques brayed from the ‘outside noise’

3. You may continue to compare OUR continued and current mediocre performances to the poor outcomes for others in the past. You may render my submission as a whole lot of ‘shoite’, but the bottom line is that Jason Holder seems to be seriously regressing. He also failed his mission by bowling a totally amateurish SHOITE super over. He CAN and should do better in the future.

So correct, there used to be the set up bouncer and the follow up jaw breaker, or under current CWI standards a short and wide and a follow up slow full toss. There is no ownership of the colossal failure by leadership or the players. Many of the current team have been playing internationally for years under different flags, so no excuse about coaching or such typical escape. Our team sucks. big grin big grin big grin

Mike, U remember a odi Wi V Eng in 1981, I think, in St Vincent...
Eng bowled out WI for something like 127, and WI won that game?
I think they had about 2 runs to make in the last two overs with 1 wicket in hand, and even though Croft had taken 6 wickets for 14 in his 9 overs, Cappo Lloyd gave Holdeng the 49th over to bowl, and he bowled the last Eng batsmen and gave Wi victory.

I definitely remember that match!! I remember my late father gloating to friends, because he was the only one in the group, that had agreed with Lloyd’s decision. Don’t remember if it was 81 though…

Listen fella, Stokes got some licks in a WC FINAL years ago, Holder has been taking licks and got some licks in A MINNOWS WC QUALIFIER…apples to tangerines. YOU have presented nothing of substance to rebut the fact that our most seasoned campaigner, bowled SIX B.S ‘SHOITE’ deliveries to a 2nd tier MINNOW lower order batsman. He CAN and should’ve done better; he did not, he failed miserably. End of story.

Holder or Joseph or Keemo or Shepherd.....any of them could have been clobbered....before the tie- breaker..Holder was the most economical bowler...but quite rightly, it has been pointed out how come Netherlands match up to 374.....Chase bowling penultimate over and conceding 21 runs.... modern cricket .. penultimate overs always bowled by best available bowler...leaving maximum runs to score in last...49th over ought to have been bowled by Joseph...who knows, he could have picked a wicket or two to kill the match...bowling Chase was more criminal than Holder bowling tie- breaker over....

kazakman Jun 30, 2023, 1:26:43 PM

Shai Hope needs to wear the dunce cap , throughout this match he made poor decisions. His field placing was poor , the Dutch were getting 2 runs when only a single was possible with better field placing.))
Most of the bowlers were bowling short and wide and were being hit for 4 or 6 .A good captain has to talk to the bowlers telling them whatche wants , but if he is not a student of the game he would give them the ball and let the bowler do what he wants. This is what happens in Holder's case . I don't know if Hope was living under a rock. IPL just finished he didn't see how poor Holder was in the last over at IPL.What a dunce captain he is . We will not qualify .
