HEADLINE: Brathwaite wants pace at the Oval in 2nd India Test

West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite is hoping for a greener, more pace-friendly pitch at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad as the home team aim to bounce back in the second and final Test match against India on Thursday.

With Dominica’s spin-friendly pitch favouring the Indian squad – which was pivotal in their demolition of the maroon inside three days – Brathwaite is looking forward to better bowling conditions in Trinidad to amplify their chances of a possible series tie.

When asked about the pitch conditions working against the hosts, Brathwaite said, “I was obviously a bit surprised but I think we can’t control that. Unfortunately, India coming to a spinning pitch, and that’s all I can say about it.

“Hopefully in Trinidad, we can get a pitch with some grass and assistance to more pace-friendly than spin-friendly. But we got to wait and see what we get in Trinidad.”

When a team can’t play they will fail on a spinner friendly wicket; or a pacer friendly wicket in fact they will even fail on a batters friendly wicket. The problem with this West Indies team is, they cannot bat pace, can’t bat spin and can’t bat swing. In fact any team that has Raymon Riefer batting at number 3 in test is telling the opposing team and the world that it’s a damn poor batting team. Bad news is our bowling is not penetrative

WI might do better with pace, at least the openers and few top order batsmen might get some runs.

In reply to Slipfeelerkeep hoping till we get to the grave but fact is these guys can’t bat period. Go back to test # 2164 between West Indies and Australia at this same venue. WI won the toss and batted and got bowled out for 134 and 216. It was a green pitch and back then we had a much better team but it was the Australian quicks that demolished us. We had three members of that team against India last week: Brathwaite, Blackwood and Holder. So if you guys think a faster pitch would benifit us think again

In other to win games we must have the right team. B4 the match I always pushed for Chase to be on the team because he has performed well on this wicket with both bat and ball. I wouldn’t pick Blackwood because he can’t bat spin and in his 3 or 4 test at Windsor park his highest score is 12. Riefer should not be on any test team
Then in this day of technology WI must use their computer to research the ground. Windsor park has hosted now 6 tests and only once the team batting first won. Our record at this venue is 4 losses, 1 draw and one win The only team we beat was Zimbabwe and we won the toss and bowled. Out of the 6 matches Brathwaite has played 4 or 5 of them and he too hasn’t gotten runs there. So why bat when you know this is the worse West Indies team we ever had?
They all know Windsor park always helps spinners. Yet Permaul who keeps taking most wickets was left out for Warrican and unfit Cornwall. Why was Kavem Hodge a batsman, handy spinner, a Dominican that’s familiar with the conditions and who could fill the role of Chase? Not even as a reserve? Keep doing all these errors and think you can win

Why wud a team not known to be adept at playing spin opt to bat last on a spinning wicket?

Now in addition to all the above, the captain asked for pace, so the selectors dropped a batsman (all be it correctly so in this case) and brings in a spinner. The reasoning is way above me.

In reply to soloviewI just don’t know what these selections smoking or drinking before they select a team. I guess St Claire will replace Riefer at #3 and they will make him a batting all rounder like the one he replaced.

It’s not a venue problem….it’s a talent problem. Indian batsmen batted and bowled on that same wicket and a debutante scored 170 batting 2nd 4 hours after the toss. So our problem is not the venue, is not the toss and is not a pacer friendly or spinner friendly wicket

WI has been struggling to produce world class players since the last batch of world class players came on the scene in 1974. Lets be honest here...the WI has been struggling as a test team since 1987-1990--way before that 1995 defeat to Australia.
