Great Sir Vivian Richards only flaw as per one of his Coaches

He would play across the flight line of the ball. A delivery pitched on or about middle- offstump, he would hit between wide mid-on and mid- wicket. When teams started to attack him on offstump or just outside he perfected his off side strokes thus giving him stroke play all around.
That flaw stayed with him throughout his career, but he was able to manage it quite well and that is what helped to make him the batsman he became.

That coach believes geniuses should conform.when turning to onside Viv was to the pitch of the ball, bat n pad close together, head still. Ball middled before angling bat at last moment. Is finding the gap an hallmark of good batting? Yes, if he missed he'd be out LBW; how many times did he miss? Genius

not many......although bowlers like terry alderman who weren't quick but moved the ball from 4th stump to off or middle stump could challenge him early on....but which batsman does not struggle with that early on

Here is an interesting FACT.Both Viv Richards and Geoffrey Boycott were dismissed in test cricket 170 times.Richards was out LBW on 21 occasions and Boycott on 27 occasions.

No need for any further comment!!!!

Sir Everton played that shot years before Viv, in fact that was the first shot played by many boys in Bim, it was called the cross haul.

I saw Hadlee get Viv LBW @ Sabina missing that shot. Can remember another time except when Botham got him and tge ump admitted he erred. Viv was on about 42 with about 10 fours

His former coach said, this flaw only manifested itself in the early part of Sir Vic’s innings, if not capitalized early then it’s all over the bowlers..
big grin big grin

Ironically, it was a flaw expertly exploited by Barbados bowlers in FC cricket. In fact in FC cricket, I think Viv must have only scored one, or possibly two hundreds against Barbados attacks containing Bird and Maco

Viv never scored a century against Marshall and Garner playing for Barbados.

We had this discussion before....Viv never scored any, but centuries were scored off rookie Garner and Marshall circa 1977-1978.

But prime and seasoned Garner and Marshall , only two centuries were scored off them and that was in Garner's final season....Richie Richardson, Mark Harper and a 90 odd by a youngster named Brian Lara at QPO
