England vs New Zealand, 1st Match

Series: ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 . India vs Australia. Final
New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to field
Teams:
England (Playing XI):
Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
New Zealand (Playing XI):
Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w/c), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Matt Henry, Trent Boult
0.2
Boult to Bairstow, SIX, here we go. A six to kick off England's run-scoring campaign. Another inswinger, but this one's misdirected and ends up as a half-volley down the leg-side. Bairstow flicks it nonchalantly over long leg with sublime timing

out Caught by Buttler!! A golden duck for Will Young who is strangled down the leg-side! Curran finds some swing straightaway but misdirects it down the leg-side. To his good fortune, Young tickles it very fine, giving Buttler the opportunity to dive across and grab it. Young can't believe his luck as he walks off. England needed this early breakthrough and they've got it. Will Young c Buttler b Sam Curran 0(1)

Australia's strike rate is a little low at the halfway stage.
Smith and Labuschagne need to get a move on.
If not for the coloured clothing, I'd think this was a replay from the 1987 World Cup.
On commentary, Mitchell Marsh was quoted as saying these were the hottest conditions he's played in.
According to BBC Weather, the shade temperature in Chennai (I still call it Madras) is only about 33 C, but with the humidity it feels like 47 C. Nobody, let alone Europeans, should be playing in such conditions. And people wonder why Indians have little culture of spectator sports.

Temba Bavuma, time to buy a lottery!! It's your lucky day son..... Short delivery, pulled straight towards deep backward square leg. The fielder misjudges, would have been an easy catch had he stayed by the ropes, but he charges forwards and then backtracks. Catches the ball but realises he will fall over, so throws it in and surprise, surprise, it falls over Mitch Starc who had got closer from fine leg to take a relay catch

A rude awakening for the defending champions who were strikingly poor today with both bat and ball but take nothing away from Afghanistan, they well and truly earned this win. A complete team effort and they've got every reason to celebrate.
It was Gurbaz that set the tone after AFghanistan were slotted into bat first, his 80 did more than just giving Afghanistan a flying start with the bat. It reaffirmed Afghanistan's belief that they could come out here and compete against a champion side like England..

Kudos to Netherlands for getting 245. They have bossed this game for the last hour or so. South Africa walk back with a few shaking their heads. They look a bit shell-shocked at this assault in the last 10 overs. After rain forced the game to start 2 hours later, the game was reduced to 43-overs a side.

When they beat West Indies, everyone thought it was a one off but this team got back bone. SA will win this easily. They have the best batting lineup, hands-down, but it was nice to see the Netherlands getting in the act.
In reply to CricSham
With all due respect to West Indies, Netherlands qualification into the World Cup makes more interesting, the Dutch are more consistent and challenging than the unpredictable WI. Only good things can happen for Netherlands from hereon!
de Kock, out Caught by Edwards!! Huge wicket for the Netherlands and they look absolutely pumped. More of a round-arm drifter from Ackermann, got the ball to skid and bounce a bit extra as de Kock looked to sweep past short fine. Was a bit early into the shot and got a healthy top-edge to the right of the keeper. de Kock c Edwards b Ackermann 20(22) [4s-3]

van der Merwe to Miller, FOUR, have they dropped the game? The man at long-on drops it. Bas de Leede has dropped this. The batter danced down, got under it and lofted it. That went very high and the fielder despite being in position dropped it. He was nervous and has dropped it

Bas de Leede is the happiest man on the planet! van Beek is the reason for his elation. Miller's dismissal is the chief cause. England should have opted for plan b. They haven't so far and I guess it's too late now. They could have bridged the margin of loss a little. This will surely hurt their chances of a top four finish even if they win all their remaining games. Their NRR will take a huge setback.

One of my best (knocks) ever, I was hitting the ball nicely, this knock will go down as one of my better ones. It was proper heat, saps all the energy out of you. The heat out there was extreme. They (England) were physically under the pump but a couple of wickets got them back in. Next level (Jansen's knock). This award needs to go to him (Jansen). He kept me going and pumped me up. He has been phenomenal, has been batting so well. The runs he scored were so vital for us. That loss (against Netherlands) was a tough one, but we know we are playing good cricket. One loss doesn't make us a bad team. It was a fantastic performance today

13.6
Ferguson to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, a positive start by Shreyas Iyer. Ferguson might have taken a couple of wickets, but the Indian batters are not going to get bogged down. He goes short again and this time Iyer has pulled it over square leg. Manages to beat the fielder haring across in the deep quite comfortably
15.4
Ferguson to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, and the boundaries continue to flow. 100 up for India! Was a short ball on leg, Shreyas Iyer swivel-pulls this to deep backward square leg. Boult runs across to his left and puts in a dive, but fails to stop it. Not the greatest of conditions for the fielders. Is clearly affecting the visibility of the players..
15.2
Ferguson to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, misfield by Chapman! Looking at that shot, it did deserve a boundary, and that's the end result. Was punched on the up by Shreyas Iyer, and the fielder stationed in the deep gets quickly to it, but the ball nutmegs him and races away to the fence
Conditions getting worse now. The low hanging clouds/ mist has engulfed the entire ground. The NZ players ain't happy as they are having a chat with the umpires.. The two batters have joined in the conversation too.. Looks like players are walking off the field

But Santner pounced on the ball with a full length dive to put Virat in doubt and he hit reverse gear. SKY was already close to him by then. The throw was actually off and went to Boult who was nowhere and in the middle of the pitch. But SKY was too far down the pitch that Boult smarly under-arm flicked it back to Latham to effect an easy runout. What a terrific piece of fielding by Santner.

A look of excitement and relief on Hasan Ali's face. How desperately Pakistan needed that? A length ball outside off, shoots up a bit and the extra bounce gets to Zadran. Madushanka to Bairstow, 3 runs, uhhh! There's a long chat for a review. Madushanka, Kusal Mendis and Nissanka gather around but don't send it upstairs. Excellent first delivery. Inswinging yorker, Bairstow brings his bat down and jams it straight past the bowler, test for Mathews' fitness and he gets there with a slide to haul it in before the rope. Oh no! Replays are in and ball-tracking shows three reds. It was pad first and then bat. Bairstow is a lucky man..
out Root Run Out!! What a mix-up that is. Last ball Bairstow asked Root to wait, this time Root cuts one straight to point and sets off, sent back and to be fair, there was no run, Root is well out despite the dive. Root does not even wait for the ump's call, gets up and walks off. A gift of a wicket. Root run out (Mathews/Kusal Mendis) 3(10)

Usama Mir to van der Dussen, out Lbw!! Two ump's calls and van der Dussen has to go. Will feel unlucky but that's how it is sometimes. It was a flat delivery on the stumps, Maharaj goes on the back foot and whips stylishly, wide of backward square leg and too wide for deep square leg to get across and cut it off. Kuldeep Yadav to Buttler, out Bowled!! What a jaffa! Kuldeep delivers the goods once again. He bowls this one on a flatter trajectory outside off. Buttler goes back deep in the crease to access the off-side but the ball turns back sharply and there's a big bat-pad gap. The ball goes right through that and shatters the stumps. Hit the top of middle. England are in dire straits now!

Was nicely tossed up and held its line around middle, was the wrong 'un and the right-hander didn't read it, went for an expansive sweep and missed. No bat and UltraEdge confirms it. Rashid Khan to Dhananjaya, out Bowled!! This was coming, DDS was tied up in knots and Rashid has cleaned him up with the wrong 'un. Loose loose shot by DDS and he's left his team in a hole. Was nicely tossed up on off and spun back into the right-hander, DDS was lunging forward on the block, bat well in front of the body and that created a massive bat-pad gap, beaten on the poke and the ball crashes into the middle stump. Saffies v Kiwis
Go Saffies!
In reply to Chrissy
Men's World Cup matches involving the countries' cricket teams have have been spiced with drama - the 2011 quarterfinal and 2015 semifinal, for instance - but this rivalry isn't as keen as it is in rugby. Maybe that's because New Zealand have beaten South Africa six times in eight meetings. It isn't much of a rivalry if one side wins significantly more often.
But the South Africans will believe they are capable of pulling one back this time. They are among the biggest batting teams at the tournament, and in Chennai on Friday they offered evidence that they have found a way to play under pressure by hanging tough to beat Pakistan by one wicket in the first close match of this World Cup.
In reply to shivnotout
You do know the Saffies beat the Kiwis at ruggers over the last weekend! This might just be the Boers year. Ask GAW!

I think so (best form). I am feeling really good lately. Nice that everything is coming together at an important time for us. They bowled really well upfront, especially Boulty. I felt quite scratchy upfront, I couldn't find my rhythm, I was getting a couple of messages from the guys on the bench to bat through. I just want to keep batting. My career is coming down to a finish, trying to bat as much as I can. If the wicket stays the same, it will be good enough. The wicket does get better under lights. 357 is always a good score, but we are playing against a really good team, let's see what happens

Bumrah to Nissanka, out Lbw!! What a start! Nissanka goes for a golden duck but does not waste the review. It's ump's call on hitting. Lovely delivery angling into Nissanka on a good length and then swerves away wickedly, brings Nissanka forward and he is opened up totally, rapped on the back thigh. Only height was a question but umpire Paul Reiffel had the finger up in a flash. Clipping the top of the bails. That will do for India and Bumrah

Siraj to Karunaratne, out Lbw!! Dream start for Siraj too. Plumb LBW. Goes full and gets late shape into Karunaratne who flicks and misses, pitches in line and that's crashing into the stumps, easy call for umpire Chris Brown. Karunaratne wastes a review too. Siraj has started on a similar note to Bumrah. Sri Lanka already under the cosh.

Siraj to Kusal Mendis, out Bowled!! Siraj has his third. Unreal scenes here at Wankhede. What a ball! And he does the CR7 jump and point at your back celebration with a loud siuuuuuuuuuu to follow. Again goes well wide of the crease and bowls it on a back of a length and angles it in to off-stump, Kusal Mendis is beaten on the back foot block as the ball straightens after pitching, the ball hits the top of off-stump. A peach and Siraj is again doing it against the Lankans.

Oh shite! Haven't heard that one yet?
Our bowling is in good shape and with the kind of rhythm (talking about the form of the pacers) that we are in, everyone is enjoying and everyone is happy for each other's success and more importantly, we are bowling as a unit and that's the result you are getting to see. I always try to bowl in good areas and be in good rhythm. In big tournaments, once the rhythm goes away, it's very tough to get it back. I always focus on hitting the good areas and length. Very happy (on becoming India's leading wicket-taker in World Cups) It's very important to be in rhythm in white ball cricket and hit the good areas. If you hit the good areas with the new ball you will get assistance off the pitch and for me length matters a lot. The kind of support we get from the crowd, I want to thank each and every one of them. We also get a lot of support whenever we travel outside India as well. The dressing room is in a very good space

Iftikhar Ahmed to Williamson, out Caught by Fakhar Zaman!! Oh that's a good catch at the boundary as Pakistan finally break this partnership! Desperately needed that breakthrough with things going out of control! Williamson, on 95, dances down and gets leg-side of the ball as he looks to create the room for a lofted shot. He then swings through the line of it and seems to have struck it sweetly. But it doesn't have enough to clear the long-off boundary. Fakhar Zaman, running to his right, takes a smart catch with fingers pointing up. A fantastic knock from the captain comes to an end.

A window for Pakistan to get back into the game with both set batters gone now. Shakeel had some ground to cover to his left, which he does, and he makes the catch look very simple despite being only a foot away from the ropes.

My opinion
Angelo Matthew's approach to the wicket was casual, wasn't ready, and after shuffling about, realized his helmet strap was broken.
Bangladesh justified in appealing and Umpires correct in giving him out
Angelo playing this game too long to be this unprepared
In reply to LBW375
whatever he did, if he felt he was in danger then the umpires ought to step in...
what if his pad strappings had become damaged when he got to the crease, would he be asked to go back or have em replaced...
to me this was a safety issue and should have been dealt with differently

He had an impact pre injury and he's continued to prove his worth in the mega event. Gentle raise of the bat to acknowledge the applause for his fifty

record 50th ODI century for Virat KING Kohli! He has overtaken Sachin Tendulkar. Not only does he reach this remarkable landmark in front of his cricketing idol, but he's also done it at the same venue where he carried the great man on his shoulders after the 2011 WC triumph. He's also bowling down to Tendulkar now. 135.1kph, Kohli whips it away to deep backward square leg and comes back for the second. Jumps and punches the air in delight after completing the second run. The helmet comes off and he raises his hands before bowing down. SRT, in reply, stands and applauds. The star batsman gets flying kisses from his wife now. Every New Zealand player congratulates him. He walks off to a standing ovation. One difference that India has on this side is Shreyas Iyer's form. The number four dilemma India faced for a long time is gone.
Iyer got to his hundred off 67 balls today, making it the fastest in a World Cup knockout. The record belonged to Adam Gilchrist previously, who had completed the milestone off 72 balls in the 2007 final against Sri Lanka.

"If you look at the spinners' length, it's bare, the spinners will come into play on this surface. As the game progresses, if there's dew, it'll play nicely. When you look at the center of the surface, there's a little bit of grass. There'll be carry for the fast bowlers from a back of a length. You want to bat first in the semi-final. When it comes to second innings, you just have to negotiate the first 20 overs. If that dew becomes a factor, it becomes a lot easier to bat on. You'll always get movement with the humidity around."
it's going to be a used pitch - the same one used for South Africa vs England and India vs Sri Lanka.

Shami to Conway, out Caught by Rahul!! Shami and his love for wickets in his first over continues. This time a wicket off the first ball. Rahul takes a superb catch. No feet at all from Conway as he looked to drive it, got the edge and KL leapt to his left to take it. Superb low catch. That was fuller, Conway was drawn into the drive sans much feet and that meant the edge was found.

I was waiting for my turn. I wasn't playing much white ball cricket. I had in mind, we talk about a lot of things like yorkers and slower balls. I tried to take wickets with the new ball. I try to take as many as I can with the new ball. I dropped the catch of Kane. I felt bad. I tried to take pace off. They were playing their shots. So, I took a chance. The wicket was good. There was the fear of dew. The grass was cut off nicely. The runs were enough. Had dew come in, things could have been bad. The slower balls might not have worked. I feel amazing. This is a huge platform. We lost in the semis in the 2015 and the 2019 WC. Looking to cash in with the chance I have been given. We don't know when all of us will get a chance like this again.

Pat Cummins: We would have batted first as well. But it is overcast and hopefully there's some swing early on. They play pretty similar style, unfortunately they have won a last few, we are due. We have been in these positions before. We have a lot of experience. We were not up to our best in those couple of games. But guys have been positive in the last seven games. Two changes for us. Stoinis and Abbott are out. Maxwell and Starc are in.

Shamsi to Labuschagne, out Lbw!! Indeed he is, Tabraiz Shamsi has his man and boy is he pumped! Was a good length delivery on off-stump, Labuschagne leaned in to reverse-sweep and it turned back in sharply, went past the blade and struck him in front. He had a chat with Smith and went upstairs, there wasn't any bat or glove, ball tracker showed impact was in line and it was just clipping leg-stump on umpire's call. South Africa celebrate, this wicket couldn't have come at a better time for them. Labuschagne smacks his pad with his bat as he walks off, he's not happy with himself and rightly so, there was no need to get adventurous at this stage, especially with the ball turning so much. He went to play that against the turn and paid the price.

It's a rare occurrence when a team goes unbeaten for an entire tournament, so I am going with the Aussie Bushmen to inflict the first loss on home team Hindia.
Hard to unpack all of that. Tensed finish, amazing game. Didn't move from the seat for the last. We knew how it was going to play, we had three or four days here. We haven't seen such spin, we knew we had to battle. I thought I wasn't going to be here (after the hand injury), but I am happy to contribute for Australia, nice to be here. Straight as they came. He (Klaasen) smacked me, was under the pump, but it was nice to get his wicket. I was prepared to bowl a few overs, always keen to contribute with the ball. We have had that positive approach to keep the pace rolling. Disappointed for the way I got out, that (vs Maharaj) was a match up against a left-arm spinner, but wasn't to be. It's an unbelievable attack, their bowlers look sharp and they have been one of the best teams in the competition, never dreamed of playing a World Cup final against them.
Cannot put it into words, first of all congratulations to Australia. Good luck to them in the final. They played really well today. Our character came through today. We should a lot of resilience. The way we started with the bat and the ball was the telling point, that's where we lost the game. The conditions combined with the quality of their attack was it, they really put us under pressure. You're always going to struggle to put up a competitive total when you're 24/4. We were gaining some momentum when Miller and Klaasen were out there but unfortunately he couldn't carry on a bit longer. Miller's innings was superb, really highlights the character of the entire team, it was extraordinary to do that in such a pressure situation and in a world cup Semi-final. They got 70-odd in the first 10 and that really allowed the rest of the guys to settle. Markram and Maharaj were fantastic and they really put them under pressure. We had chances, tough chances that we put down, it could've been a bit close had we held on to them.
Somehow, if someone had asked any of us to pick one team that we were confident would be in the finals most of us would’ve picked Australia.

India vs Australia, Final
For neither side is stranger to this stage. Certainly not Australia, who are doing this for the eighth time. They have picked up World Cups like how some #wanderlusts collect souvenir fridge magnets on their journeys: in Kolkata, London, Johannesburg, Barbados and Melbourne. For so many teams, playing a World Cup final is an occasion. For Australia, it's a way of life. And still, their journey to this point was riddled with uncertainty.

Smith missed it and the finger went up. Interesting Smith didn't review that. He did have a chat with Head but walked off. Height was a question surely. Oh hang on, the replay says impact outside off stump. What a moment in the game. Why didn't you review that Smudgy? Smith lbw b Bumrah 4(9)

Just tuning in forgot about the game...But you are indeed going with the odds as i wanted to
seeing that a team is due to lose. Would be tough on India to lose but I think you are on
the money with the Convict Colony.
