Operations Director of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Michael Hall has outlined the reason behind Jamaica not being a host nation over the last few years of the League, highlighting a lack of economic value, cited by authorities there, as the reason.

Hall, speaking on the Mason and Guest radio show in Barbados, pointed out that Jamaican authorities have “rebuffed all advances by both the League and the franchise” to have matches on the island.

“Jamaica has not been a host for the Caribbean Premier League in the last two years. 2020 was obviously not possible- it was the pandemic year- when we played it in Trinidad. In 2021, while the pandemic lingered, we played it entirely in St. Kitts,” Hall explained.

“But they (Jamaica) did not meet the criteria to host games in 2022, nor did they do so in 2023…and they have rebuffed all advances by both the League and the franchise on the basis that they’re not seeing the economic value that the CPL brings, in spite of all of the data that’s being presented to them.”

Not a fan of the Holness govt, but I don't see what economic value the CPL brings either.

How much is the CPL and the Tallawah franchise asking from the J'can govt in return for matches being hosted in Jamaica?

I am very interested in reading the entire report- The CPL is private business entity, like any other corporation lobbying governments for preferential treatment- read subsidies and in turn they sell the idea of job creation or economic benefit.

Jamaica, with their long and expert tourism industry know how may be on to something: I read of the owners of CPL boasting of how it helps the local economy, but I have yet to see a neutral objective economic activity report from an uninterested party.

I want CPL cricket in Jamaica, but not if they have to cut spending for schools or healthcare to attract a team.

I also do not support tax payer subsidy- like Guyana, Trinidad, St Lucia, St Kitts and Barbados has been providing to the foreign owners, money that leaves the local economy.

I share your sentiments….I challenge Michael to substantiate the economic value claim….cricket is not a popular sport in Jamaica…If I had a choice I would throw my support behind hosting a diamond league track and field event…that to me has enormous untapped potential..and we already have the infrastructure to do that with minimal additional investment

Quite so. But the problem is that a Diamond League requires or soon will require a nine lane track
as the IAAF is heading that way with all Stadia.
Got to get rid of the Cycle track to accommodate that at the Stadium...or

Sabina Needs millions to improve, Trelawny is a cow pasture and Catherine Hall was not developed for
big International events. In any case it is being used for nothing except a race car guy using the track for
a test run ,if I read correctly recently. No maintenance is being done there either.

I blush when I just read of Guyana's many Stadum coming on stream.
Perhaps Yard should tap them for two with the caveat that The Giver will also take
care of maintenance and improvements.

I was once the General Manager of Independence Park Limited (2003-2005), and following my time with CWC 2007, was named to its board. At that time (15 years ago) there was already a plan afoot, which our relevant board Committees approved, to scrap the cycle track, and do many other things to improve the stadium. No development has taken place.... none. Neither government saw it fit to approve the required funding. There might have been a sliver of hope of something happening under a PNP administration, but absolutely no hope under the current one.

That plan has gone from being afoot to being underfoot...

That's the truth.
That was on the cards a long time.
The only decision by the PNP govt at the time was where to locate
a cycle track seeing that Heroes park was the venue for Cycling and called Town Moor back in the day.
The cycle track was put in the stadium as a cost saving measure and contingency to meet the commitment forthe
CAC games of 1962, as what is now Heroes Park was earmarked for things other than Sports.

Maxfield Park was seen as a possible site but when MNM put the German school on that site, then
ended all hope for a cycling venue in Corporate Area.

Cycling still needs a home as the sport is important and apart from Track and Field,is the only
other sport that has given the country an Olympic Medal through David Weller in the 1980 Olympics
in Moscow. It was a huge honor for me to witness that and see the joy on the the face of Weller's coach
Ted Gray.

And you are so correct; something will sooner happen under a PNP administration rather than
this pretend JLP. But I don't see it happening anyway. More pressing will likely take precedence
in present day Jamaica. especially if the JLP is returned for another term.
Big time Sports / maintenance/improvements/ expansion are not on JLP's radar or todo list. They will talk however
and therein lies the problem.
