Steve Waugh was the batter.

He was on 42 and went on to make 200 and with it went the Sir Frank Worrell trophy.

there are actually some srious contenders for the title. brown obviously is obviously the most memorable because waugh's double officially ended 15 years of WI supremacy. but there are others. Brown dropped inzimam almost ten years to the day on the same ground. inzi was on 0, went on to make 118 out of a total of 308 on a dicey 4th day's pitch. Herschelle gibbs also dropped waugh in the 199 world cup. waugh went on to make a hundred again.

Lara during that Pakistani series 1997 when Walsh was cappo

I believe we lost that series 3-0 and in each match Lara dropped a catch and the batsman went on to score big

And Lara made no runs either as he was eyeing up the captaincy

apparently marlon samuels also dropped martin guptill on a duck in the 2015 WC Quarterfinal. Guptill went on to score 237*, the highest ever world cup score

Michael Holding was on the same page after the Pakistan series, where he was a TV commentator. "Some of the players I watched in Pakistan did not have the right attitude or commitment," he wrote in his column in the Caribbean Cricket Quarterly. "They didn't seem to understand what it means to the people of the West Indies to have a team that is playing proper cricket and they weren't prepared to put in the effort."

The row over the captaincy was the troubling backdrop in Pakistan. The selectors nominated Lara instead of the incumbent Walsh; the WICB directors knocked them back and returned to Walsh. Duly angered, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board passed a strongly worded resolution that was presented to the WICB's general meeting at the start of the tour.

"Examining the evidence, we have come to the conclusion that there is a calculated plot to tarnish the image and international reputation of Brian Lara, using his past indiscretions as the basis for sowing the seeds of destruction," it read. "The Trinidad and Tobago Board stands in defence of its national hero and its world-class performer."

Fazeer Mohammed, in Pakistan for Caribbean press and radio, as he now is in Australia, reported that "persistent newspaper reports in Pakistan of Lara-inspired rifts within the squad succeeded in throwing him off his game".

The topic of this thread is - Most costly dropped catch in history.

No one attempted to define what “ most costly “, or “in history” mean

Dropped catch for this purpose is self explanatory

Having not defined the terms outlined in the topic, the first name mentioned was Courtney Browne, as was the intention of the thread starter who is harbors an unwavering animus towards bajans. He and I know why but he may have to consult with his mother ( as he no doubt will say he was not born yet) before he will answer that

And yet Browne’s drops are well known and were v costly indeed

Nevertheless I remember WI touring Pakistan in 1997 and the great batsman Lara dropping crucial catches in that series where the batsmen went on to scores important runs that ultimately beat WI.

There was some issues regarding the captaincy of WI before the series. The main contenders were Walsh and said Lara. The catches dropped by Lara were mostly off Walsh’s bowling

There are all sorts of arguments being mounted to defend Lara but none so far has ably defended why these dropped catches by Lara in the Pakistan series weren’t costly are per the topic especially when juxtaposed against his dismal returns with the bat

The obiters in the argument are just noise- tits shaking so to speak

You haven’t identified the catches missed and the runs scored
You haven’t established a causal link between the 3-0 loss and the dropped catches
You haven’t established a causal link between the desire for captaincy and the dropped catches
Conclusion- your argument is puss cool

Confirmatory Evidence
Link Text

No real follower of West Indies cricket will ever forget the wicket keeper, Courtney Browne, dropping a simple catch off Australian Steve Waugh at Sabina Park.

Waugh was then on 42 and went on to score 200. That was the beginning of the end. We could not remain world champions forever but no lover of West Indies cricket would, in his or her darkest nightmare, have dreamt that 20 years later we would be languishing miserably at the bottom of the pile with no sign of progress.

In that period, we have seen Australia rise and fall three times. We have seen England rise and fall and India the same. We have seen South Africa, who in 1995 had not long returned to Test cricket, produce a number of top-class teams. These teams are tired of whipping us. Our team has gone from bad to worse and is now close to terminally ill.

Brown dropping Waugh must be up there with the worst.

Somebody dropped I think it was Boycott in the second World Cup final. The English batsmen were batting so slowly it was a very "good" drop.

The Courtney Browne Dilemma Wed, Jun 8, '05
by PETER CLARKE

Commentary
'Catches win matches' is a dearly held cricket maxim. Conversely, it can be opined that dropped catches lose matches. Let's test the latter for its veracity.

Poor Courtney Brown has compounded his place most unfavorably in the annals of West Indies cricket when he dropped the Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on nought. The Pakistan skipper went on to make 117 not out, a major contribution to his team's total of 308.

For many cricket fans, this dropped catch sorely brought back memories of another dropped catch by Browne on the same venue in 1995, when Brown dropped Steve Waugh, then on 42, off Kenny Benjamin at 173/3. Waugh went on to add a further 158 runs in Australia's total of 531.

Many West Indian fans to this day believe that Courtney Browne was, (and even is) the reason why the Sir Frank Worrell trophy is not held by the West Indies. With the subsequent demise of West Indies cricket, he's a convenient scapegoat for our present predicament.

Fast forward to 2005, another 10 years on, at the same ground with the West Indies leading a series, and in a position to win a Test series against a higher ranked Test team. The prospect of getting the monkey off our backs was too exciting, we could almost taste victory after playing on par with a stronger Pakistan team, if not excelling up to the point where we had Pakistan at 119/3 in their 2nd innings. The scalp of their best batman would have made it 119/4.

Courtney -- for many West Indian fans, with you, if not because of you, we lost something dear to our hearts in 1995; without you, we could have achieved something, be in the ascendancy again with a series win in 2005.

But does that mean Lara ‘s drops in Pakistan 1997 did not occur or that WI wasnt drubbed 3-0 after the batsmen he dropped scored significant runs?

He identified the state of the innings and what had transpired before he went out to bat. "I painted all the scenarios, coming in to bat in the T20s at 25-5, then 70-5 and then again seventy something for 5. If I played my natural game and got catch out on the boundary, people will say I am irresponsible."

He said it was interesting that he should be dropped after one bad tournament when in the series before in the Caribbean, he topped the averages when the West Indies reached the finals of the Tri-nations series involving South Africa and Australia.

"So I cannot agree with the chairman of the selectors that there was a lack of batting commitment."

Pollard said he is still interested in playing for the West Indies and was told his career is not over, he just needs to go back and work on his game.

Pollard said he was surprised that fellow Trinidadian Denesh Ramdin was also dropped. "Perhaps this was the one that shocked most people, when Ramdin, who scored two totals of thirty odd was also dropped and was told that it was his commitment to wicketkeeping that was the problem, he was not cheering on the team enough, (not) giving them encouragement."

The wickedness

According to the 31-year-old Trinidadian, who has played 74 Tests for the West Indies, the recently appointed Chairman of Selectors Courtney Browne, himself a former West Indies wicketkeeper, has indicated that Ramdin will not be selected as his Test average of 25.87 is simply not good enough.
“What a rainy day, lil heads up for shotta80 fans wouldn’t be playing in Test series vs India. New chairman says my average isn’t good,” Ramdin posted on his Twitter account.
He immediately went on the offensive attacking the chairman of selectors about his career playing for the West Indies.
“Life goes on man. God is great. What I haven’t done in my Test career is drop any batsman to score a double hundred vs WI.”
Ramdin was making reference to Courtney Browne’s disastrous dropped catch off Steve Waugh two decades ago, enabling the Australian captain to go on and score a double-hundred and lead his team to a series win that effectively ended the Caribbean side’s reign as the unofficial world champions of Test cricket.
He wasn’t done. The player who has scored five Test centuries and 15 50s also hit out at Browne’s career Test average. “Man, who’s telling my average is bad with 25.87 but his is 16, telling me about batting and has never scored an international hundred, shameless.”
In his own defence Ramdin posted: “Last two innings over 60 vs Australia down under but not good enough to play anymore.”

True. But nobody save Lara and hooper were capable of scoring runs against Wasim and waqar. Again, nobody on the wi side was capable of scoring against saqlain mushtaq except Lara and hooper. Lara had a rare awful series, hooper had a rare great series. Whether or not those dudes made runs, we would not have won anything because the bowlers were too good for all but two of the batsmen on the teamZ whatever Pakistan scored, we wouldn’t have made it. In 1997, the teams weren’t evenly matched. Pakistan was much better than us. In 1995, Australia and WI were very evenly matched and only browne’s catch tipped the series in their favor
