Alick Athanaze's name
In reply to TanteMerle
Whilst I agree with you in English you pronounce it Naze rather than Nas but then again the man said he name Athanas we should pronounce it as such!!!
In reply to TanteMerle
when all dem bajan and LI commies used to mash up shivnarine chanderpaul's name calling him shinareen, i didn't hear you
In reply to Jumpstart
Stop making stories. you never heard that.
In reply to Jumpstart
I neva heard dat either.
Any fool can know that naze is not pronounced nassed or nas or even nass.
I understand that the different accents
I never agreed with mocking Darren Sammy when he commentated
and pronounced words different because of accent,
but what these guys doing with Alick Athanaze is kind of demeaning.
In reply to tc1
allyuh bajans does really live in a hermit state surrounded by a non-permeable membrane boy. I'd be surpised if you people heard about the JA earthquake
In reply to Jumpstart
The more you post, the more you make an ass of yourself.
are you not missing an 'r'. i know its the most prominent letter in the bajan alphabet
In reply to TanteMerle
Actually it is much worse than Trini. Names are mispronounced over and over during commentary.
It is sickening.
Truth be told most of our modern day commies are uncomfortable with the English language. Fluent they are not.
Maybe they should just speak their native dialect - it would be less jarring on my ears.

The pronunciation is Athanaz minus the silent...
I would not write here what my wife calls some here and the misinformed Comms who should know better(I think) with their public pronunciation with certain words.
In reply to TheTrail
Have not see you in a while, Jumpy is still a fart.
The evil Trinis at it again.
When will they stop?
Many names have multiple pronounciations…
Alick Athanaze
Sarge has taught me to be careful of those here including…
Bishop pronounced it correctly
In reply to Barry
Yes Bish did
In reply to tc1
What's in a name? A rose by any name smells just as sweet.
Meanwhile, what is Athanaz(e) doing with the bat?? A start in almost every match and not able to carry on.
In reply to PalsofMine
If you ask me we should all be more concerned about these frustrating failures by Athanaze ( Pronounced nase like Nasal) to build upon starts.
In reply to voiceofreason
What’s the source of your advice?
Wait, so all yuh wrong but think you right… Caribbean people ain’t easy nah… can wait for this assignment to done…
I checked the origin of the name and one site says it comes from Greek origin and is spelt Athanatos, another say it's origin is Dutch and pronounciation was given as Athanas. It appears the Trini comments are not wrong, what I find is,why are people here making a "mountain out of a molehill",I think Chrissy had the best comment about this, mek every commentator talk in their own patois.
Some French names are anglicized but note the French pronunciation

ey doh ask bajans about advice about foreign names.....they're bimshire after all......especially when every name is brathwaite, smith, greenidge, Springer, harewood, brooks, Boyce, jordan, marshall(actually a white ancestor of mine originates from barbados)
In reply to Barry
Bish and Ganga are correct in pronouncing it.
VOR may be presenting a patois version…
In reply to tc1

I am almost working around the clock 24/7. Are you still wearing your mask in a crowd? Be safe out there this time of the year. Remember, it does not descriminate.
Jumpstart will always be jumpy!!

In reply to Jumpstart
The thing is they do have some Guyanese living in Bim now,Some so they may start learning how to pronounce non white British names.Bim commentators had problems with the names of some Indian players when they toured the Caribbean,Cozier was OK but some others could have bitten off their tongue.
In reply to Barry
That is how his family wants his name pronounced. It is the pronunciation in Patois. The islands are French creole oriented. At first I used to pronounce it Athanaze like Nas the hip hop legend however Bishop said he received calls saying that it should be pronounced Athanaze --Nasal.
In reply to voiceofreason
I understand- but Bishop has to use the British pronunciation for an international audience. The patois is also not understood by the French…I blame the family…Chrissy’s University is moderately strong in linguistics…
Of course I proved my point in a little experiment.
I mentioned Trinis in my comments to see who would jump and it worked.
Here comes the usual suspects to defend your honour or it it honor.
That aside..
Bishop is wrong and he is the first I heard saying it and
the other commies followed like sheep..
In the CPL, during a post game interview,
the commie asked Alick Athanaze to settle a querry
among the commies' box about how to pronounce his name.
He said, and I am almost quoting, (from memory).
" You guys had it correct at first, it is Athanaze" , as in Naze and not nass
The commie was that young guy from Barbados, I do not recall his name.
After that, the idiots, especially Bishop pronounced it correctly
Naze sound like NAISE not NASS
I do not recall the exact CPL game.
Anyone here remember that interview?
Red, you can pull up all the website pronunciations you like.
They are just like you, misinformed and chupid.
They are based on AI, which any sensible person know is flawed
Again, just like you Red Baron aka Barry.
Why don't the well connected people here get Alick Athanaze
to go on social media and say his name correctly
and shut up you idiots and your idiot commies.
In reply to voiceofreason
teach them bro.

So the field of linguistics is just stupid- no wonder bolls calls you cave men…
How do you pronounce Athanase? A given name…
In reply to Barry
Of course you saw it, last sentence in the opening post.
I said/wrote, "I think it is a Trini ting."
I wrote it to evoke Trinis responses here.
In reply to Barry
You actually citing Bolls as an intellectual guy.
he may be in reality, but not on this Rum Shop.
Socafighter that’s a bit narcissistic- no one read your post…
I came to read some grovelling apologies but maybe the guys haven’t had time to post yet for today. Will check back later to confirm the dignified stance of many posters here.
In reply to voiceofreason
trinidad is heavily influenced by the french creole tradition. 100 years ago, most of the calypsos were sung in patois. up until the 670s or 80s, paramin's second language was french patois, and many of the people in their 50s and 60s today can speak french creole.
In reply to Barry
Why does he have to use the English pronunciation for the English Audience? Why can he just use the creole version to show our uniqueness? Mikey Holding became an international success as a a Commentator not just for his frank and professional Cricket insight but his authentic use of his own vernacular in his Jamaican accent. Remember ' in the miggle'.
In reply to voiceofreason
Really? Holding apart from his attitude speaks standard- I don’t consider creoles bastardized- they are sexy like my German friends speaking Trini- in this case the Dominican family is wrong - however doesn’t the Caribbean have many linguistic experts?
In reply to voiceofreason
That’s why I gave the French
In reply to TanteMerle
Bullshit
In reply to voiceofreason
Pause to consult entry in Fontaine’s book
Although English is the official language of Dominica, much of the population also speaks Kwéyòl (Creole) – a French-based patois.
This content is provided by “Dominica’s Diksyonnè Kwéyòl -Annglé, English-Creole Dictionary” by Marcel Fontaine, 1991. Marcel Fontaine published a Kwéyòl Diksyonne in 1991.

I suspect that you are well-versed on that topic bro.

Bottom-line is that we as West indians must respect each other's cultural nuances.
Despite the play fighting on the rum shop message board,
I am sure that there is not any real disrespect intended.
At least I can speak for myself.
I love all West Indians.
I was a staunch West indies supporter.
I am so hurt by the CIBC/CWI governance, or lack thereof,
that I pledge my support to other teams nowadays.
Yes it hurts when West indies performs poorly.
The mis-pronouncing of Alick Athanaze's name before his interview was understandable.
He made it clear how it is pronounced.
Since the interview, even Bishop pronounced it correctly.
To hear a West Indian commies mis-pronouncing it nowadays is disrespectful.
I stand by my words on that.
Supposedly of Greek origin but then lots of names are in any case interesting that the country with the most using/carrying the surname is Dominica with 63 then France and Antigua with 35 each. His family I guess would have obtained the name via French connections and we know what that is related to.
In reply to TanteMerle
Point me to the interview please
In reply to Scar
Dominican French based patois is a separate entity...
Everybody is wrong, Bishop is correct
Dominica TV
Barry is bright
In reply to Barry
I'm so tired of dealing wid you.
Why don't you just ask Bishop.
After the interview that Alex gave his proper name,
Even Bishop called correct after.
You just get an idea in your head
and believe that you are correct despite any evidence.
You believe that you are correct, stick wid dat.
Hope it helps you sleep at nights.
i always thought it was
atta
nayz....corrected to reflect ...
Nayz as in maze
what is it?
In reply to TanteMerle
Socafighter, I showed you Dominican YV- if you have the clip with Athanaze, post it, else go play with the Barbies…
In reply to doosra
Normal anglicized pronunciation just as Bishop says it…
In reply to Barry
Yea
Auguste is giving trouble too
I heard a commie say
A goose tea
In reply to doosra
I just lost an entire post so I will just retype the last part.
Red, call Bishop and he will confirm the interview and the corrections to pronouncing Alex's name.
