HEADLINE: Shallow: CWI to revamp franchise system

CaribbeanCricket.com Nov 28, 2023, 9:59:30 AM

Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Dr Kishore Shallow said the regional franchise system will be revamped to better serve its objectives. Shallow made the announcement on Friday during the feature address at the Queen's Park Cricket Club's annual awards.

"There is a delegation in TT as we speak assessing the franchise system, and the plan is for them to go across the entire region and review, advise, make recommendations to the board about how we can improve," Shallow said.

The delegation is being led by CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe and includes Enoch Lewis, chairman of cricket committee; Graeme West, CWI High Performance manager; and Chris Brabazon, CWI coaching manager.

Noting US$400,000 is being spent monthly on the system, Shallow said CWI needs to get value for money.

Not a moment too soon. He had the right audience too. Given the furore over DB's non selection and the LS explanations as to why, this is timely. That a CWI reform group is in Trinidad to begin the regional recce says much.

International retainers.
Domestic retainers.
Coaching staff.
Academy costs.
Travel etc.

Probably all contributing to the costs.

15 players per franchise x 6 franchise = 90 players

On average a player gets 2500 USD per month so that alone is 225k per month. De rest is for the coaches and support staff.... head coach, assistant coach, manager, analyst, physio and a strength & conditioning specialist (At least 6 support staff per franchise)

CWI should consider these...
- Maybe regional batsmen over 32 needs to average 40+ in the last season to qualify for a retainer. For bowlers an average of less than 25. Only those U-25 should get a free pass.
- Mandatory for each franchise to include a certain # of U-25 players. With a fixed amount playing in each match.
- In the off season all contracted players must train as a team under the guidance of the coaching & support staff.

400k a month is 4.8m USD a year...that is no money to develop a business like WI cricket...

Hope they change the name of the organization from CWI back to WICB.

That would totally erase the Big Idiot's legacy.

LOL. people told cameron through the news that this was a bad idea. As has been shown innumerable times since the departures of lara, shiv, bravo(s), Samuels, Sarwan and the Universe boss, a lot of the WI batsmen do not have the skills and technique necessary to combat the examination that is 4-day cricket. That comes down to poor coaching, poor facilities and poor pitches. that is what you should have been working on before the PCL.

My thing is if the PCL had been effective, we would have been scoring runs versus high quality attacks. New players would have been scoring hundreds versus high quality attacks. But, as the stats would show, the players that made runs debuted before the PCL. Kraigg, 34+ avg and all debuted in 2012, darren bravo, the only centurion from the WI on the 2015 tour of Australia, debuted in 2011. Samuels, as inconsistent as he was, debuted in 2000.

I lie. blackwood scored a hundred versus a very good, possibly great NZ attack. One batsman out of the 36-40 batsmen who've been part of the PCL. And he only averages 30

The thing is all those players in the PSL, them fellas was trying their best. but yuh cant take a man who just finished primary school maths into a calculus class

Blackwood..."And he only averages 30" (See post above).

Hehehehehehehehehehe!!!!

Bifurcation: 30 is only for Blackwood but it is selection worthy for DM Bravo.

Some posters here are dishonest to the core.

Would you say that the domestic/PCL contracts have seen an improvement in fitness, performances etc?

I would have the PCL champions keep 15 retainers, the rest see there allocation reduced to 12 each, meaning the 3 draft picks are then on downgraded contracts or pay-as-you-play.

At least 2 contracted players per franchise should be under the age of 25.

The 22/23 International retainer list was:
Jermaine Blackwood
Nkrumah Bonner
Kraigg Brathwaite
Joshua Da Silva
Jason Holder
Shai Hope
Akeal Hosein
Alzarri Joseph
Brandon King
Kyle Mayers
Obed McCoy
Nicholas Pooran
Rovman Powell
Kemar Roach
Jayden Seales
Romario Shepherd
Odean Smith
Hayden Walsh Jr.

the thing is the PCL was created primarily to cater for the test team.

Jermaine Blackwood
Nkrumah Bonner
Kraigg Brathwaite
Joshua Da Silva
Jason Holder
Shai Hope
Akeal Hosein
Alzarri Joseph
Brandon King
Kyle Mayers
Obed McCoy
Nicholas Pooran
Rovman Powell
Kemar Roach
Jayden Seales
Romario Shepherd
Odean Smith
Hayden Walsh Jr

of these players, only 3 or four can realistically play test cricket. One can, bbut has shown no appetite to, that is Nicky P. Shai Hope tried and his weakness against the moving ball and short pitched bowling results in a test average under 30, Seales is a good prospect, Brandon king is also a good prospect but the vast majority of these players, including the captain, have chinks that limit their success in test cricket against decent teams. As i said, it is not that i think these dudes are not trying. they are. but CWI should have focused on technical adjustments and proper pitches before they wasted money on the PCL

Every system needs to be reviewed periodically so it is a good move to do so now. For me, priority must be given to proper pitch preparation as without international standard pitches, you simply cannot produce international standard players.

CWI should select the 90 players. Local boards are too "close" to the players to be relied on to be unbiased.

PalsofMine Nov 29, 2023, 11:19:23 AM

Yeah, but look at the recent fiasco with CWI selections where the leading players in Super50 with bat, ball and wicketkeeper were all not selected. One may be too close and the other too far away and shortsighted to boot

Agreed as bad as some may feel the local boars is. The CWI selection nah. Let the local board select. Either have some criterion that all players should pass. Then have a similar criterion for selection to the senior side and for central contracts there as well.
There's no perfect system just improvement upon one. So hopefully the review proves to improve what's already there. There are some positives coming out now especially when you see that there's some movement from U15 to U17 to U19 to emerging then A team and hopefully senior team. Most these guys are just beginning to play more and more games. And we all know that is a major step in having these guys improve over time.
I still would like to see linger FC season cause it's way way too short. I feel that the CWI marketing team needs to really push for more sponsorship of the league fund ingenious ways to get sponsors on board.

I think that the move to Headley Weekes this year was a step in the right direction. I think that the next innovation should be to have the Academy and/or a President's Select team also play FC cricket so that we have 8 teams competing instead of 6. This should then be followed by Headley Weekes which should comprise the champion team (more bragging rights!), the two selected teams (Headley and Weekes) and a foreign A team so that their participation could be part of their WI tour with probably T20s of List As to follow. I can appreciate the argument against this as being that a foreign A team only wants to play a WI A team but technically 2 of the WI teams should be equivalent to A teams if they are the best players from the FC Season (Selectors permitting!!) so that in theory they are playing the equivalent of 2 unofficial tests. The game against the champion team at the worst could be treated as the equivalent of a first class warm up game as used to be played long ago when test teams toured the region. This way our best FC cricketers get a season of 10 FC matches plus hopefully there is an annual A team tour abroad.

I like that it may take a bit more work on the part of the board but still doable.
I would of liked this to be the set up.
you play both FC, OD and T20 matches
so say a LI play Bim in Bim for a week the team is there and they play the FC then OD then T20 and later on they do the same back in LI so a home and away series. This may mean a mixture of personalities in the team but that too can work. I guess may mean making sure this can happen where you have most to all players available.
But like you, the Headley weeks series too can be a best out of three. So both team play each other three times with the winner coming out of that. and if that's too long then as you say have an invitation team
But yes have 8 teams playing each other at least twice the more cricket the better
