The Jamaica Tallawahs are one of only two Caribbean Premier League (CPL) teams, alongside the Trinbago Knight Riders, with at least three titles to their name.

They won the inaugural tournament in 2013 before doing so again in 2016 and 2022.

In the next edition of the Caribbean’s biggest T20 showcase, the Tallawahs will not be present.

In their place will be a not-yet-named Antigua-based franchise. This won’t be Antigua’s first time hosting a franchise as, for the first two editions of the CPL, they were the home of the Antigua Hawksbills who won only three of their 16 games before eventually replaced by the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

After acquiring the team in 2017, Guyanese businessman Kris Persaud sold the Tallawahs back to the CPL ahead of the 2024 season because he said he was unable to sustain the team given a lack of support from the Jamaican Government.

The west Indian cricketers reserve the right to ply their trade internationally to maximize their economic returns. They have the free will to determine when, where and who to play for, and it is right fought for and won. By the same token, the Jamaican government, and all other regional governments, have the right to determine where to invest the scarce resources of the region. If the Jamaican government believes that cricket is not a viable economic option, they have the right to refuse to support it. After all, this is the taxpayers money at stake, and it must not be placed into unprofitable enterprises.

I am certain that if West Indies cricket becomes attractive again, the govt of Jamaica would be rushing to accommodate a franchise. And, in this atmosphere of entitlement, Jamaica will get a franchise if Jamaica wants it. Like some players, the Jca govt knows that they can come and go, at will.

Our players must see the need to improve West Undies cricket. If they don't we will experience the ultimate demise of West Indies cricket. IPL and other franchise profiteering worldwide have not improved the quality of our players, and that is troubling for the future of our cricket. Somehow, somewhere, the players need to see beyond the individual. If not, the centre will fold, and things will fall apart. Mark my words.

The Jamaican government needed the money to give themselves huge salary increases, making them, per capita, the highest paid politicians in the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. And don't expect things to change anytime soon. These gravalicious, incompetent people are there to enrich themselves at the expense of a better life for the long-suffering Jamaican people.
