Kieran Powell for Tagenarine

Jumpstart 2024-03-15 13:21:38

tagenarine's technique won't get him far in international cricket at all

Narper 2024-03-15 13:26:18

So you replace him with a 34 year old who has played 44 test with an ave of 25 with an SR of 50.....and you expect this replacement to get further in international cricketbig grin

Drapsey 2024-03-15 13:45:48

In reply to Narper

Kieran's failure(s) due to the era in which he played. Not much success(es) to report for that period. Recall he was hand-picked by the then WICB (ok, CWI) president to be the next WI cappo.

ey.....adam vogues played his first test at 37 after first debuting for AUS in odis at age 26. he finished with an average over 60. o all is not lost for powell. A blind deaf-mute can see that tagenarine at this point does NOT have the technique for test cricket. keiran has one thing that only da silva, hodge and Mckenzie have right now in a WI line-up: a sound technique.

Narper 2024-03-15 14:12:01

In reply to Drapsey

Kieran's failure(s) due to the era in which he played

Didnt he make test tons in both innings of a test match?
How many times has he been recalled to the test team and then dropped for failing?

Now I am not arguing for Tage to stay....but to replace him with a repeated failure is madness....

Give a young opener a chance....if Tage dont shape up.

Tage had a good start to his test career against none other that the mighthy Ozzies

Ask Universe Boss....many on this board and elsewhere condemned his technique since the early 2000s

Are any of them opening batsmen ?

allan 2024-03-15 16:13:24

In reply to velo

really if you can bat in the top 4, you can open an innings
case in point Steve Smith
or even Viv he first started

dayne 2024-03-15 16:18:04

It looks like Solozano is sending a message to the Selectors, he has been the most consistent opener so far this season, not bad for a player who cannot make a Trinidad team

Louis is by far the standout player

openning 2024-03-15 16:42:43

In reply to Jumpstart

That will be a backward move, you have to build with the team that went to Australia.
Louis has put his hands up, let see how the other openers are doing.
The tour of England should be Kemar Roach's last tour.

Cricket_101 2024-03-15 16:52:49

In my opinion - Tage is too immerse in defensive mind-set while at the crease, which is compromising his batting. I think if relaxes at the crease and bat freely, he'll yield better results...big grin

In reply to Narper

if gayle had a proper technique, he would average close to 50 like the rest of his opening counterparts in test cricket. I'm talking about the hayden's. sehwags, Alistair cooks of the cricketing world. how many times did sarwan and lara come in two wickets down with very little on the board because gayle and ganga or wavell hinds did very little at the top

bird 2024-03-15 17:01:35

In reply to Jumpstart

Powell is a proven failure, invest in some one else

Jumpstart 2024-03-15 17:10:48

In reply to bird

i wouldn't call powell a failure. he was a victim of the chaos that enveloped west indies cricket from 2010-2019. Not one WI batsman in test cricket came out of that period with their reputations enhanced? How could they, especially when it was apparent that the teams being picked weren't the best available sides.

That victory in australia had as much to do with the environment surrounding the team as it had to do with the performances of shamar, da silva and hodge and the others.

4REALQUICKS 2024-03-15 19:22:13

Watching live and another failure from Tage just now...caught trying to pull Jair McAllister for 20

the answer is not Powell though...need somebody from those named above to stand up

Vikesh Mohan is not doing bad as an opener,i find it strange he's not been mentioned.

Jumpstart 2024-03-15 20:01:58

In reply to granite

right now i'd put mohan and especially Jyld Goolie above chanderpaul. Goolie oozes class in the same way McKenzie oozes class. As i said, he just attacks too much but hell, i prefer going down fighting than being a hermit in perpetuity. if you're going down, inflict some injuries while you're doing it.

really did anyone tell him to pursue a career in baseball?
haha

granite 2024-03-15 21:50:48

Z.Mc.Caskie must be on the team to go to England whether he replaces Tage or not but he is one to go far.

jacksparrow 2024-03-15 22:29:28

if they stuck with a certain john for such an extended period, Tage deserves same. Powell unfortunately has been tried. Would not be wrong to take another opener along.

natty_forever 2024-03-15 22:42:36

Powell for me would be required to score over 800 runs and average above 50 to be considered.

dayne 2024-03-15 23:05:48

Well, everyone is forgetting that McKenzie is an opening batsman, if things don't improve with the openers he could fill in and then Carty or King could bat in the middle

cricketfreak 2024-03-16 00:04:10

Look another hundred or couple more 50s from Mikyle Louis and he must be on that tour to England. .

Onionman0 2024-03-16 14:45:28

Since retirement of Haynes & Gordon.....

Phil Simmons
Campbell
Stuart Williams
Wallace
Lambert
Chattergoon
Ganga
Hinds
Gayle
Barath
Lendl Simmons
Powell
Smith.....many more....

Apart from Gayle....non was successful.....
Almost all average in 20's..... except Hinds and Campbell...at one point Campbell was averaging 60.... because of double century, just like Mayers ...but his performance became very poor....all openers were aggressive with the exception of Ganga but failed.

Now, Braithwaite is best among above in terms of run scored,..Tage in short career average 32.....He has played 4 away test against Australia....2 away test against South Africa..let the lad play at least 20 test...some test at home....then judge....
Both Braithwaite & Tage should continue as they are......bat slowly, kill bowlers....make easier for middle and late orders to prosper....my opinion...make 25 runs in 150 balls better than 20 balls ... classic test match...leave Bazball for England...

granite 2024-03-16 17:10:08

The selectors fukked A.Barath so they could get K.Powell in the WI team.

But Tage is no UB. He ain't even scoring as much as Gayle did with his bad technique. So you can't co.pare both. At least Gayle was scoring runs Tage is not

Not sure why allu keeps ignoring Solozano. He just scored another 70. Has one of the best techniques among our openers... Plus he has some FC experience. Very compact player is he..

4REALQUICKS 2024-03-17 10:28:35

Honestly, if an opening batsman is making his runs consistently, I do not mind if the strike rate is 40 instead of 50, 55. The problem is Tagenarine Chanderpaul is so out of form that he should not be in the test side until that form returns. For me, three batters who can open need to go to England in July. McKenzie is certainly an option and patently, Brathwaite will be one of them. That other place is up for grabs, lets hope that somebody, whether it be Solozano, Louis or whoever else, gets runs and grabs the chance.

Blackbird 2024-03-17 20:19:42

Agreed.
A drop for Chanderpaul won’t be a the end of him, it is an opportunity for him to go back to the drawing board.

Powell’s age is not a factor, performance beats age and if he can give a 2 year run while we groom others.
