This biassed judge, MacGregor, was something else. The verdict was "guilt of murder with a strong recommendation for mercy", yet he imposed the death penalty.

He was represented by Vivian Blake, an able advocate and future QC; the instructing solicitor was Noel Nethersole, Hylton’s captain in the Jamaican cricket team of the 1930s.
Forgive me, I cannot help myself... Nice to see those two PNP stalwarts mentioned. big grin

I had read about this cricketer and the murder, but never these details. What a story.

Thanks for posting this article. I was 10 years old going on 11 when the murder, trial and execution happened. I recall hearing lots of people in my district talking about crime of passion at the time. Many expressed sympathy for Hylton because they believed Lurline drove him into uncontrolled rage and jealousy. Some people thought that Hylton should have never said anything to the arresting police, instead, he allegedly told the police that "I shot her in her
P---- because not even the devil will fu-- her when she go a hell."
I believe that their son went to KC and played Manning Cup football in the late 50s early 60s.

Bias most likely based on classism and colorism of the time. Sadly, some semblance of that still exists today

Agree with you but differ in intensity...
1. Bias definitely based on classism and colourism of the time.
2. Sadly, much of that still exists today. May be less in-your-face and more subtle, but with us nonetheless.

My niece's book "Sweetness in the Skin" is coming out in a couple of weeks and it deals with some of these issues.
