Worcestershire have signed Jason Holder for the opening five Division One County Championship games .

That's were Holder astute about his cricket...
First, he prepared himself for IPL and World Cup by missing Australia tour...
Now, playing County to prepare for England tour...
Professional players do think and prepare....

The experience on the English wickets will certainly come in handy prior to the test tour. I am pleased that the tour is in mid-July this time...slightly harder wickets, generally better weather conditions too. A few of the current Windies batsmen would really struggle on a lively green top under grey skies in drizzly April!

Obviously Jason Holder can do whatever he wants without repercussion.

Doesn’t want to play against Bangladesh either away or at home? No problem

Didn’t want to be selected for the tour to Oz because he wanted to focus on preparing for T20 World Cup and instead sings fo Worcestershire to play 4 day cricket?

West Indies cricket pick a rell mediocre player to be their golden boy. Usually that is reserved for your best and brightest players, but since the St Lucian two headed monster came on the scene, we seem to have started to operate every action to the power of negative one

Clearly yuh living on pakaskas because Pollard only fought wars with CWI until we were saved from the stupidity of the cameron/two headed st lucian monster years by the skerrit/swallow faction

Disagree. Jason Holder is not mediocre.

His performances since his removal as captain in all 3 formats have dipped……sometimes significantly.

But he is still a quality cricketer

nah we disagree here. holder is like a very good swing bowler you'd find on the county circuit. He had a purple patch because during three-four years of his career, we had a vey good bowling attack. people were scared of being hit by Angel, and then they weren't as careful against him or alzarri, who generally were the change bowlers. I'm not saying holder didn't bowl well at times, but i am saying he's nothing to scream about. his returns against india, australia, SA and co prove this. you cannot expect holder to run through a lineup like the way Gabriel ran through SL, the way Shamar ran through Aus twice, the way kemar ran through england and bangladesh, or even glenn mcgrath, a bowler of similar pace and height but who annihilated countless lineups during the 90s and 200s

Holder is definitely no McGrath and while McGrath and Philander and Swinging Jimmy have proven that you do not need to have express pace to be successful, Holder just seems to lack the killer instinct that these guys had. it is like he slips back into being mediocre too quickly. Anyway, I am glad to see him on the county circuit again and wish him well. If I recall, he had a few matches a couple years ago but did not bowl much. I wonder what are Worcs plans for him. Btw, has any West Indian ever played for this county before?

Apparently Hartley Alleyne of Barbados played for them, was given his county cap in 1981

That's a head scatcher. The only name that came to mind was Kenny Benjamin, though it turns out he was only there a year, 1993. The 80s and 90s were the decades that I followed the county game closely, and Hick (before he qualified for England) and Tom Moody were each the overseas player for a number of years.

Talking Worcestshire, I see Duncan Fearnley died recently. From about the mid-80s to the mid-90s, DF bats were hot property. Botham, Richards, Hick, Crowe, etc.

Duncan Fernley was the flick indeed. I think their popularity suffered a little when Viv went to Slazenger though

That was around 1986-87. I found a news story that said Fearnley was surprised to see Richards on some ODI highlights from Australia using a Slazenger bat when he was still meant to be under contract with Fearnley.

Thinking about that period of the late 1980s to early 1990s, here's a few of the other bat associations that come to mind.

Stuart Surridge: Gooch and Mark Taylor

Gunn & Moore: Gatting and Steve Waugh

Gray-Nicolls: Gower and Atherton

Of the bat market nowadays I know practically nothing and when I watch games I seem to be perfectly unconscious of who is using what.

graeme smith used a gunn and moore as well, kallis used slazenger, lara's 375 and 501 bats became probably the best selling gray-niccolls blade ever. a lot of SL players used to use kookaburra's....sangakara was one. But the indian bat industry has changed the market fundamentally, you barely see anybody using a gray-niccolls now. Other sports companies tyhat weren't in cricket prior to the 2000s have also come on the scene and have players under their contracts. Puma, Adidas and New Balance are three that come to mind

I’m pretty sure Vanburn Holder repped for Worcestershire for most, if not all, of his county career.

He did actually. We need to find some WI players who played for Yorkshire. The only one I knew was Kraigg for half a season. Yorkshire really wasn’t a club that liked black or brown people
