Was very good, when I first saw him bowl thought he was a seamer. Long run up and quick for spin bowling.

Underwood was known - back in the days - for his economy.

Because of his unusual bowling style, most batsmen found it hard to score off of him.

But later came Sir Vivian Richards ... he would severely punish Derek Underwood -

in a manner no other batsman could.

very quick and almost unplayable on sticky or difficult wkts in England. He got pounded by Viv n Co in '76 when he was nearing the end of his career.
In '68 or so when Foster debuted in England I was surprised that Knott stumped him off Underwood because of how they described the pace of his deliveries.
This lil boy didn't remember how adults raved about Hendricks stumping off Hall.

So glad you mentioned Hendriks. He was better than Murray and Dujon. But don’t tell that to the young ones they’ll eat your head off

He was simply great ,perhaps England's best ever spinner and of course Deadly on
a rain affected wickets when he was unplayable.
His combination with Alan Knott behind the sticks was also legendary.

RIP. Deadly.

The best exhibition of batting I have ever witnessed LIVE was Lawrence Rowe against the same Derek Underwood At Queens Park Oval.

Kallicharran (my favourite bat at the time), Sobers, Kanhai, all failed. Underwood was near unplayable on that day as WI faced England in overcast conditions.

But Rowe kept late cutting him. England’s captain kept adding slips, then 2 gully’s daring Rowe to cut. He kept cutting later and finer. He cut some out of Alan Knott’s
Gloves it was so late.

On the rare occasion Underwood over pitched, Rowe drove majestically through the offside.

Delicious batting

You know Yagga says that fighting knock is his best test ton? And, that's coming immediately after the 302 knock!

I wouldn’t doubt it. It was a gem

Also, Underwood wasn’t a traditional spinner. He rarely if ever flighted the ball. He was a kind of slow medium pace.

Almost like a left arm orthodox Badree.

RIP Derek. Lots of memories of listening to radio commentaries of him bowling to WI batsmen. His run up was so fluid and so different from our left armers who take a couple delicate steps only. One of mu favorite international bowlers
