US$2.2m to get presidential pardon
Ex-convict claims drug trafficker on life sentence paid off lawyers, politician...

A CARIBBEAN national serving a life sentence for drug trafficking in this country more than a decade ago devised a scheme to pay US$2.2 million ($14.9 million) for a presidential pardon which eventually saw him being set free.It was done with the help of two Trinidadians—another man who was serving a life sentence for murder at the time and a well-known attorney. The lawyer assured the Caribbean national that he would be pardoned once there was an upfront US multimillion-dollar payment in 2011-2012.

The convict’s pardon was considered in 2013.One acre of land in the Caribbean national’s home country was also promised as recompense to the local convict who at that time was also serving a life sentence and who helped the Caribbean national connect with the lawyer. The Trinidadian convict, recently freed from prison after serving more than 20 years for murder, told the Sunday Express that he had disclosed this plan to Special Branch police officers during a statement they took from him in 2021.

He also provided to the Special Branch officers WhatsApp voice notes and telephone conversations he said he had with the Caribbean national in 2022.
The man admitted he had paid to be given a pardon.
