and I have heard some say the most complete ever...equally good to pace and spin

man that backfoot cover drive...Lara played it too

they don't play those shots anymore

there is a Kanhai clip of it that i watch whenever i feel down and out here

I won’t disagree with that “most complete” statement.

The guy was special

More heard about Kanhai. He was nearing the end of his career when I actually saw him bat.

nope.....which is why when batsmen today are confronted by a proper test bowler, they struggle. kali had a speech at a function new york a few years ago, and he was talking about the dudes who charging and playing pacemen on the front foot because they have protection and he said in his day anybody playing a quick on the front foot in his day was a straight hospital visit

Why was Charlie Davis discarded with a 54 average in 15 matches?
I watched him score 180 plus against NZ..pure class

I am learning from Michael Jordan who says, it is insulting to speak of the greatest, who you have never played against, and who played in a different era.
He said to a guy, how can you say I am the greatest, with Bill Russell winning the most titles?
Shaq and Charles Barkley are saying the same.

politics. before clive boards were still bartering for their players being selected. clive stopped that nonsense when his team started winning. but davis retired before lloyd became cappo, maybe if he had stayed on things may have been different.

I remember Charlie Davis famously saying that Charlie the groundsman at QPO made more than Charlie Davis the WI cricketer. And then went on to say that he (Charlie Davis) was paid $10 per day for the test in Trinidad.

Things sure have changed today.

Tony Cozier made this comment many times on air in the 70s

The uniqueness of Sir Gary was his ability to bat, bowl pace and spin, and his fielding.
Some say a South African is better, but did he have other factors?

You must come up with some logic.
When I said Sir Everton was better it was not about looks or a shot that got fans excited, I have seen both, knew about their history, and at retirement, all factors come into play.
Basil Butcher is one of my five best favourite West Indies batsmen, from where he came from, and to finish with such an average in test cricket is incredible.

Charlie Davis was selected for the England tour and turned its down. He was in the dressing room with the players during that tour. I am uncertain, my senses tell me history health issues may have surfaced at that time. For those who are unaware he suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.

Not too bad, McMorris said he got paid 6 pound for a tour of England!

I was at an event last weekend, met Lawrence Rowe. I was privileged as a youngster to be at Kensington on the Saturday of his 302. On telling him about seeing him and Kali beating ball. He said, "So many people forget that Alvin scored a century that day too."

Many, many, many yrs ago in an interview praises were being lavished on Rowe when he interjected 'Did you see the little man at the other end?' He stressed how Kalli helped him. It was in that test that Tony Grieg 1st started bowling slow off-cutters. Yagga said he drove at a flighted one and got a thick outside edge to thirdman. After the single he came down and asked Kalli 'what happened there?' Kalli said that was a drifter start single he n gi he to mi. Each time Grieg tossed up the drifter Kalli in a flash was down the track on-driving for four. It was during that period that after Kalli took a quick single off Grieg and bumped into him that Grieg called Kalli ' A BLACK BASTARD'

It caused a furore (think Cozier was the one who revealed it on air). I have been trying to find any old article on it but cannot. Someone claims it didn't happen and I'd like to prove it did.

Better than who? Sobers? On which planet? What do you mean by knowing "about their history and at retirement, all factors come into play"?

Basil Butcher is one of my five best favourite West Indies batsmen, from where he came from, and to finish with such an average in test cricket is incredible.

Here you are talking about your personal preference. That's perfectly OK. No one will dispute that.

I didn't envy anybody who had to face Hall and Griffith, also in that match there was a white bloke,a fast bowler called Richard Edwards.Did your lil brother ever played cricket when he grew up,Joe Solomon was a hard nut to crack from what I read but only scored 60 or a little over,he was good for us though.

Yea I just recall that,I think I read in the Papers (i used to read the sports page since i was six) that Solomon and Alexander scored 100s.I distinctly remember the TT papers said two of the greatest names in History Solomon and Alexander scored centuries.
PS,I can't recall if Alexander scored 100,it was possible he did or he made a high score to take us out of a hole.cool

i believe kali scored a hundred in the second innings of this test......viv had already battered aussies to a pulp and kali methodically removed the heart of the aussies. in this same match, andy roberts dismissed both chappell brothers with successive deliveries. it was a true mauling. I've watched the highlights many times since it was uploaded on youtube.

hall was a great bowler, a truly great west indian pacemen, the father of the modern WI pacemen in fact. a great sportsman and statesman. his role as manager of the WI in the 80s is truly underestimated. proof of Hall's greatness as an administrator aswell is the fact that under his tenure, there was never a player rebellion. We also performed better as a team. lost to SA and Aus, who had better teams, but beat India, who were rubbish away from home but were still expected to beat the WI(we had lost to both SA and NZ at home in the 2001 season) and Sri Lanka's best ever test team, with mahela, atthupatu, rampant murali and vaas, sanga, hashan tilekaratne, jayasuriya...a great side
